I cleaned a house like this 2 yrs ago. Mother was recovering from drugs. While she was in rehab, I cleaned. It took me 2 weeks. It was worth it. I used a steam cleaner for those types of floors. They looked brand new. The mother has done well and got her 3 daughters back. She is still in the program and will be released next December just in time for Christmas! Never give up on those in need!

I have had times when I was in such a bad place l, that it took everything I had to just get out of bed, bathroom, eat and sit on the sofa till I had the energy to go back to bed. I Thought that was as low as one could feel. It wouldn't surprise me if the only reason she is still alive is because her child. There is a Christian KZbinr and author named fly lady who was popular a few years ago. She actually teaches people who are dealing with analysis paralysis, and being overwhelmed or being perfectionist that wanted to be so good that they just do nothing how to do the right steps to get you the right direction. More basic than any of the other programs that get a little too perfectionist in style and don’t meet the real needs of a horder or someone who literally doesn’t know where to start. Perfectionist help out there is actually causing the problem to get even worse for those who need truly simple advice like after you eat rinse your dish and do your dishes and clean your sink… right now before you read the next page.

Hopefully with the help from Barbie, community services, medical, psychological and emotional support she will be able to cope with any physical, addiction, eating and emotional problems that she has been dealing with and get her life onto a level where she can live healthily with her child going forward. Best wishes to her and her child for a steady recovery.

This room is a perfect illustration of the junk food-depression cycle. When we're depressed and anxious, we lack the energy and focus to cook and we crave excess carbs. Eating and drinking all of those carbs makes us even more depressed and anxious, and the cycle continues in a downward spiral. Thank goodness people like Barbie are there to interrupt the cycle.

Amen to this. Whenever I see hoarded or trashed homes being cleaned there are always hundreds or even thousands of pieces of junk food and soda or alcohol packages! Thankfully some health practitioners are realising how there is a link between depression and eating a lot of highly processed foods. Eating more plant foods and complex carbs that have not been highly processed CAN make a huge difference to the way we feel.

I just want to say that I really appreciate all the work you did for this young mother Barbie. Having been someone who lost a child because of a mental disorder, but not this specific issue, it really is very meaningful that you are compassionate and helpful. There can be a lot of judgement and stygma surrounding CPS, and I am absolutely sure this mother loves her son and is most likely further traumatized because of his loss, and has guilt surrounding that. I say further because it does seem that there is probably trauma and depression associated with this issue in the first place. I hope that this young mother finds continued support and is able to get her son back, and able to build a life free of suffering and trauma

It's so sad that someone, anyone had to live like this. You are a Godsend, Barbie! Watching you collect the garbage, I am struck by how much of it is soda bottles and pizza boxes. I almost think the way our society has evolved lends itself to hoarding because of the way items are packaged. In the old days, before plastic, people could return glass bottles and would get a nickel (5 cents) back for each bottle. This gave them the incentive to take them in. Now we are expected to recycle but often times, we are not even provided with a reasonable way to do that. The result is, when someone is already struggling, something like recycling is just too much for them... so they end up with hundreds, if not thousands of bottles laying around. I know part of it is because of their illness and maybe they would still hoard these no matter what. But it does not help that so much packaging is used all the time. It's ironic that the reason for all the packaging is health and safety concerns... yet the packaging is killing us.
