The "why bluff raise when you have showdown value" has an even simpler explanation imo. You're simply raising your best folds. All else being equal (i.e. ignoring blockers), it's better to bluff raise top pair and fold a nothingball than raise a nothingball and fold your top pair.

I wouldn't be surprised if Addamo just had a sick read on this guy and knew he couldn't have 98 after he bet the flop nor two pair after he checks the turn. Calling the river is standard but Addamo understands the value of putting fear in your opponents at the poker table. It's interesting that the re-raise shove is solver approved (albeit at a low frequency) but I suspect that Addamo was using exploitative reasoning in this spot.
@housemagicians2 жыл бұрын
I mean 98s could be some of the value combos that flat in HJ and bet on A-high flop when UTG checks. Then check nuts for deception, and raise to a sizing such as half pot to get called from middling strength hands on the river
@Gos12345672 жыл бұрын
Yea the line from Ponakovs does look fishy,check back trun but raise now that a brick 3 hits?The suprising thing is the Adamo raise,maybe adamo possibly thinks Ponakov couldve checked back A8,A9?Seems specific though and i doubt Pon even checks those,tbh i have to watch again as im not getting the bluff raise
@timb42482 жыл бұрын
I agree. He doesn't want to look like a guy who just takes passive lines with weak top pairs and pays off on river. It's too weak he would rather be the guy who can turn pairs into bluff and makes you think twice before value raising A9 or AJ on the river here.

The problem Addamo probably had in just calling with A5 is there is a possibility that Ponakovs is doing this with a better Ace and Ponakovs's mind he might actually be trying to get more value from a hand like AJ or AQ or he himself is trying to convert a hand like A2,A4,A5,A8,A9 into a bluff to make better ace in Addamo's hand to fold. Now Addamo has the same problem in just calling as he is not beating some of the bluffs especially A5 , A8,A9 and values like AJ,AQ (these two are unlikely as they would have bet the turn but sometimes trap). The last hand Addamo ambitiously wanted Ponakovs to fold is A3 as this is a good possibility given the way the hand was played out by Ponaokvs checking the turn. Even this becomes a very difficult call when Addamo shoves as A3 is now only a bluff catcher for a shove as even a hand like 10 7 would have just flatted the 25K raise. In short , Addamo wanted to just rule out the possibility of Ponakovs doing this with a better hand than his A5. Against a player like Addamo it is best to go unconventional and check back your stronger holdings like set of 7s or A10 to give yourself a best chance that he would do this to you in the end :-)

Holy shit Ponakovs heart was BEATIN'!
@iambadatpickingusernames66692 жыл бұрын
Is blocking 54 of hearts somewhat relevant here? If he think Ponakovs has that in his flatting range, that would be a very logical hand that bets the flop with lots of backdoor equity, checks the turn to not get shoved on, then hits a strong hand that wants to play for stacks on the river. If that’s in his range, then suddenly you block so much of the value and the raise makes even more sense.

I can't wrap my head around this one. Turning Ax into 3 bet bluffs on the river? My thought process facing that river raise would be that I can call or fold, but never raise. He's repping a bluff or a hand that beats Ax. If his hand is that strong, bluffing him would be difficult. If he's bluffing, then calling is just as good as raising. Can anyone simplify this for me?

This feels like a game theory disaster on the river as the bluffs are snap folding and the value is snap calling. I don’t think there is really any raise fold value on that river vs that opponent.
@FindingEquilibrium2 жыл бұрын
Given that no bets went in on the turn and Michael's block was tiny, in theory Ponakovs should have some decent but non-nutted hands that want a slightly bigger pot, but not full stacks. Whether people are doing this IRL I don't know.
@tomcads16042 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that Ponakov plays 50k high rollers, maybe he's not quite at the level. But I agree, with that line it's gonna be tough to make profit on this bet

@@FindingEquilibrium Giving this more thought I missed a key element which is meta-advertising. Getting a hand like this on stream has to be incredibly +EV so even if in practice almost nobody has raise folds of their value range this play probably still prints long-term.

Did ponakovys have a tell here with his pulse racing as the commentators alluded too? Obviously it's a polarized tell where it can mean you're bluffing or have the nuts. But his bet sizing and story doesn't tell the story of being nutted. To me his raise looks like a thin value - something like AJ, AQ.

Guys! Serious question. Is it possible in todays game , for a recreational player to play poker for a living ?
@hymnofashes2 жыл бұрын
Not really. You can beat $1/$2 live without being very good, but the rake is so high and the pots are so small that you won't be able to survive. If you find a good soft $3/$5 game, like in Los Angeles or Texas, you still have to be somewhat decent, and table select, if you want to make money, and if you have low living expenses, you can make 80-100k a year and make it work. If you want to make money online, you really need to study the game, and it can take years to get good enough to beat any reasonable stake. Your question kind of contains its own answer in the sense that once you play poker for a living and rely on it for income, you are by definition a professional and not a recreational player. When the game becomes work, you are not playing because it's fun, you're playing to make money. That means picking a soft game off strip rather than playing a meet up game with your favorite vlogger. It means playing longer hours than you want to, different hours than you want to, keeping more money in your bankroll than you feel like holding, and other things: patience, observation, humility, courage, resilience, diet, exercise, sobriety, meditation, sleep hygiene, optimizing your relationships and your physical environment for poker, study, consistency, vision, ambition, and just the raw determination to slow down and think through every decision from an exploitative standpoint to maximize every spot, all the time. Most recreational players have some part of the game tree or some day or hour where they can do just what Addamo is doing, make some sick read or take some cool line. But it's an entirely different beast when you *have* to win to stay alive. Who wouldn't rather be flying around Europe crushing high rollers for millions of dollars rather than shoveling shit in Excel? So, you have to expect it to be quite hard. Poker is not a new game anymore. The bad reg is the new fish.

Going all in with that hand on that river makes zero sense. The only argument one could make is to "balance" however this is silly in a live tournament as you will not play anywhere near enough hands to have to worry about players picking up on this

Nice line but from my view as plo reg not so special. Also would snap call river raise. Don't get why he thinks. Edit: oh yeah he raised again. Yes makes sense. Opponent is capped and propably never has a straight but has maybe sie times beat his a5. Yes that's a very very good line.
