My region in Kentucky was heavily flooded a few years ago. Like this it was historic levels, but we had no warning at all. My old neighbor had all 5 of her young children die. After a week or two it felt like no one outside the area cared, we are still rebuilding and healing. Our local communities had to come together to get stuff done. I hope our Southern Appalachian neighbors get more than we did. It's so important to keep attention on this and I appreciate the time you took to talk about it so thoroughly and thoughtfully. It's so important

They also received no warning! we all got the standard flash flood warning (im in forsyth county). I myself did like many and checked the creek as it rained and paid attention to what is a "go line." When the water hits a point, you leave. I've heard the only reason we didn't get decimated as well is that we have the red clay and less mining related erosion. When the emergency messages to move to higher ground were put out, cell service was already gone. Most people got the message several days later. These poor people were swept away with no warning and no preparation time.

My scoutmaster was a WWII veteran. He taught us so much about woods lore, survival, and just being a good person. I was a scoutmaster for 20 years, we were pretty hardcore. I managed to acquire a bunch of reflective belts from my guard unit for them. We always wore them on hikes so I and the other scout masters could spot my scouts quickly.

I’m very proud of the equestrian community during this TIEC (tryon international equestrian center) has opened its doors and become an emergency services center and first responder base. They have a hospital on wheels parked on their property and have let first responders stay at their resort and cabins. They’re offering free food, water, livestock feed, showers, laundry services, and temporary stalls. They are no longer taking donations of human supplies but they are still taking money and livestock feed, temporary fencing, hay, and shavings. TIEC is taking care of their community, I am very proud of them. This isn’t being seen on the news and more people need to know

Yeah, they are... big... and... bureaucratic. RC is... seemingly too focused on the bureaucracy to even pay attention to the details. Like... I used to donate blood a lot before having blood pressure issues. The Red Cross... and ONLY the Red Cross, refused to take my blood because I was in Europe around the year 2000. Why? Mad Cow disease..... despite me NOT having Mad Cow disease, and how it's been over a decade since I was living in that area.

I was a girl scout for 7 years and the only survival skill we were taught was how to start a fire using a fire starter and sewing a small decorative pillow. Apart from that, everything was focused on caring for the elderly and children, performing skits, and selling cookies. The only food prep we learned were recipes and uses for leftover GS cookies 😂😂😂 I loved having community and caring for others instilled in me like making sure everywhere we went was left cleaner or nicer before leaving. I loved the focus on setting goals and achieving them but every boy scout TV commercial I saw of them building bridges and actual camping instead of glamping at a GS camp's gymnasium left me feeling that I got conned.

I dont understand why its gendered like that in America. I was never a scout but i had many friends who were they all learned “boy scout” things (like starting a fire, using a knife, basic outdoor survival skills) theese were kids of all genders and sometimes they would meet with other scout troops from other countries. The only thing that divides (atleast danish) scouts is there are Christian scouts and normal scouts.

Another point to remember is that Helene was predicted to make landfall significantly west of where it did and the projected path went along the west side of the mountains. The eye of Helene went directly over Asheville and the storm merged with the remnants of the unnamed system that moved onshore just the week before. I'm from eastern NC. This disaster was a perfect storm. Asheville and most of western NC was predicted to get just some rain and light winds, not a direct hit from a strong TS/cat 1. Thank you to all those who continue to support the relief effects. The lingering financial issues are that this storm hit just as the fall tourism season was about to kick off. God bless.
@flapthecrapster
@flapthecrapster 5 күн бұрын
That is true. Here in West Tennessee we were advised that all that rain was coming to us and were told to anticipate the storm to stall out over us like it did over in West NC like two days before this all happened. So they did technically call it, they just missed it by a couple three hundred miles or so.

I'm from SWVA, and there's not a single pebble of pavement from Roanoke, VA down to Charlotte, NC, that I've not set foot or tire on. My birth mother was caught in a flash flood and lost her life. My childhood best friend lives in South Carolina, and was without power or internet for over 2 weeks before he was able to get word to me that he survived. I saw footage of my hometown... what's left of it... I knew the family that lived at one address, but the house is gone... most of the neighbourhood is gone. Our little town in NW Ohio (Port Clinton) is home to some really great folks in any situation... but Brian's Home Services owner Brian Petersen gathered friends and family to start a drive for donations of goods for NC. He got in touch with the YMCA in Asheville, made arrangements for delivery and distribution as wel as getting a list of most-needed items. From multiple pallets of bottled water to truckloads of personal care and cleaning supplies, diapers and baby formulas to canned and dry foods and loads of pet food, our community sent Brian et al on the road today with 5 pickup trucks with trailers full of supplies, headed for Asheville. To say we are proud of them all for their hard work and beautiful hearts gathering, loading, and hauling the donations doesn't come close to showing our true feelings. To say we are proud of the loving generosity of our community is an understatement. We wish them safe travels and love. Our hearts are with all who have been impacted by the storms.

Thank you so so much for the last 10 or so minutes of your video talking about not forcing the people of Appalachia to change their culture and their land. When Hawaii had those wildfires last year, I was so sad to see that scumbags were trying to buy land up cheap and take it away from the ordinary people who have actual lives there. I hope that the country can view Western NC and the other areas in Appalachia the same. No one should have to choose between their culture and receiving help. My small corner of NC is being devoured by real estate sharks in huge chunks, destroying the culture and farms and land and people that I grew up loving. I've always looked to our beautiful mountains as the beacon of hope for rural, small town, southern, country life. So it hurts deeply that their homes and towns were so devastated, and that they are under threat of outsiders turning it into just more of the un-walkable, road heavy, American soulless suburbs that everyone hates living in. So I truly thank you as an NC citizen for standing up for those in the flooded areas and reminding everyone that they have a beautiful and historical culture that should have every right to keep existing!

Loads I bring into the most devastated parts of my community are sometimes needed yesterday, but not as much today because of the number of people bringing supplies in. I say this to emphasize the need for money to be donated to legit organizations. Most homes lost where families survived are not being covered by insurance because flooding and landslides are not covered so rebuilding will be a long, difficult process. Thank you to all who help.

I live in Southeast Louisiana. I’ve seen devastation from many big hurricanes, Katrina and Ida included. It’s a terrible thing to live through and we’re used to them. I really do feel the pain the people in the Appalachias are going through, I love that you guys are talking about it.

As someone who lives in NC, has family in Appalachia and got married there I can honestly say people do not comprehend the devastation in the area and how long it’ll take to recover. A lot of the effected areas are low income and depend on tourism. A lot of the local landmarks are now gone, the shops and hotels are gone. There is no chance of tourism for a long time in some areas and they may never fully recover

Intentionally contradicting you, yes, these things happen in Appalachia. In fact exactly twice in 108 years. Maybe more often going forward. Stop perpetuating the denial that these events happen and need to be taken seriously by local planners. Something has to change. Water, transportation and electrical infrastructure has to be rebuilt to be more modern and more resilient to these "thousand year" events that happen each century. As for Paulides, thank you for pointing out the missing information in his 411 cases. You are doing a service, even to those of us who are fans of his work. Thank you.

We got HAMMERED in my area by Milton. In my town we already got most of the devris cleaned up and power restored. When I went to Lowes, I donated to Helene relief efforts. They definitely need way more help because this doesn’t happen to them. We are good at dealing with hurricanes in Florida. Keep up the good work guys!

I really appreciate your comments on letting the Appliachains rebuild as they want. As someone in the architecture and sustainability realms , I think there are really ways that we can help rebuild and keep the spirit of the Appliachains alive while also helping them adapt to the possibility of future storms. With climate change, these storms will likely become more frequent. Building in traditional ways for the area is a great way to adapt to the climate that's already there - let's help them build back with stronger materials and better drainage for future disasters too. There's ways to keep the culture alive while perpetuating its ability to stay in its home. Resiliency doesn't have to mean sacrifice of way of life.

Thank you for helping keep attention for the horrific situation in NC/TN. People put things like this outnof mind so quickly. I'm in coastal SC, so very familiar with hurricane devastation. This is the next level evwn by our standards. I have family with special needs in the area, making it even scarier. I happened to be upstate for the storm myself and even there we were out of power for almost a week and leaving the area was nearly impossible.

I live in Blairsville GA, so we are close enough to hear about what's happening and have our stores struggling to keep up as people buy goods to take back to more storm affected areas. we've been trying to help as much as we can, but the things we're hearing are absolutely horrid. this storm was unprecedented, and we're unbelievably grateful for the safety of our area, while also being beyond heartbroken for neighboring areas.

I’m from one of the counties in NC bordering TN that was heavily impacted (destroyed). It is truly heartbreaking and devastating the destruction that we’re seeing. We’re small towns which means everyone knows everybody, so this has truly impacted us all. Thank you so much for sharing what’s happening here. I would like to give my opinion since I’m a life long resident of the county I live in…donations of supplies and money are all greatly appreciated as both are much needed. We’re seeing majority of our assistance coming from local churches and neighbors working countless hours to help neighbors. Please consider donating and supporting churches in these areas. Ju

Thanks for taking so much time in this video to talk about Appalachia. As someone who has a lot of family that comes from large urban areas and similarly populated, and often coastal places, it's so easy for people to not even view people from rural areas as people, much less deserving of help. Thank you for bringing up the concerns of this devastation being taken advantage of by the government and corporations, especially with the reports of stunted and denied civilian relief efforts by government bodies coming in, it gives a certain sinking feeling that these people's communities being destroyed is going to be seen as a good thing by evil people in high places.

I went through a flood in Colorado, and the National Guard were fantastic. When the town rebuilt, it replaced the mobile home parks with parks, and the parks with $700,000 development homes. There was a lot of blah blah blah about affordable housing, but in the end two lots were donated to Habitat for Humanity. Those lots were in the middle of a split road! Also the flood was an excuse for the town to annex nearby open space to build more development homes. What was a charming town turned into a boring suburb.

Thank you for urging support for northwestern NC. I'm a long time subscriber, been here since the national park service was covering up the existence of skinwalkers lmao, and its really heartwarming that a creator ive been following has not only noticed our little craphole but is also urging assistance from an audience all over the world. There are a lot of bees displaced, they're everywhere. It's also been wild, with these last few cases, to hear Aiden say the names of towns I live in or close to lol, my husband grew up around mt. Airy/Pilot (the town, not the mountain), I work in Winston, and I live 30 minutes away from g-boro. Grew up in the shadow of Hanging Rock and the Sauratown Mtns (pronounced, for some reason, Sour-Town...). My Gramma has a cottage in Marion and we can't even get out there to see if it's still there, and if it isn't, the house that she built with her late husband has been washed down the mountain with everything else. Luckily, she was due to be in the area the following week and therefore was not in the storm's path... Although she lives in Florida so.. y'know... Anyway no one cares but I just wanted to share lol
