I always wondered why the tune is titled "African". Not that I know well about the continent, but the recording from Tales from Hudson didn't sound African to me at all. Now I listen to his solo, I think I get a better sense of what he means by the title. Thanks for posting! And, thanks Michael RIP.

I agree with your opinion about that recording, and I'd recommend giving the original Brecker Brothers recording a listen (from Out of the Loop). It reflects quite a bit more of its title in its groove.
