Mike Brecker was the most complete sax player ever born bar none.He mastered the Tenor Sax.I 've never seen any sax player attack the instrument like he did
Awesome sax player. He's like the Jimi Hendrix of saxophone. No one will ever be as great as Michael Brecker.

Wow, it's amazing how much of Trane's influence you can hear coming out in Michael but at the same time, he definitely has his own sound and style that just make my draw drop. We will truly miss you Michael, you were taken away from us too soon!
i think that was possibly the best saxophone solo i have ever heard in my entire life.

...like the many that have passed on; they are not gone, musically. I have always felt that personages that have left us (like Brecker, Trane, Fat Girl, Bird, Jimi, et al) were/are conduits for musical energy passing through them for us ! A manifestation of grace, if you will. I thank the 'prime mover'.

At 4:32 he blows a killer variation on a nice ii-V7 pattern that I've heard Bird and Getz and many others use... but Michael's variation is really hip with his outside modulation added.

Wow !! I've finally got someone to LISTEN to again! Since Trane, Stitt and Dexter passed on, I thought I wouldn't have anyone else I want to hear. But, tonight, Marks6338, I've found someone--thanks to you. I did not hear ONE WRONG NOTE by Brecker. Further, it was a real heart warming thing to listen to the Japanese musicians- who have really gotten into the music- play as expertly as they did.This type of thing AGAIN shows how close all humans are--or can be. Thanks again, Marks 6338. Now, I'm going on a journey for MORE BRECKER !!

This was recorded by John Coltrane but the actual composer is Frank Loesser, was an American songwriter who wrote the lyrics and music to the Broadway hits Guys and Dolls and How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying, among others. He won separate Tony Awards for the music and lyrics in both shows, as well as sharing the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for the latter.

I think that is the idea here, drum1953, MB said himself that his rendition of 'Say It' was his way of saying thanks, of paying homage to one of his closest mentors, if your will. The torch must be passed on, as others, mentored by MB and those you mentioned, will arise and come into their own greatness as new unique voices in a parade of new generations.

sounds very much like a pattern coltrane used too. Accents on chromatically descending notes from root of II minor chord - sharp 7, flat 7 and sixth. On D minor, the Csharp, Cnat, B. Same technique often used to embellish static harmony (i.e. two-bar minor chords)
@markhiggins83152 жыл бұрын
It's a very well known ii/V/i phrase usually most associated with Sonny Stitt. That's where I first heard it and I've since seen a few educators pass it on as a Stitt excercise. A very good one to learn on all keys.

It's so amazing to see this cross cultural stuff happening. Coltrane in japan; who would have thought? On the contrary, Austin, I thought that the drummer did a nice job. So often ballad drum parts are simplistic and "tinkly;" this one was nice and rhythmic. It was a bit heavy on the snare, but it gives it a unique sound. I suppose you could find it same-y, but I find it interesting.

@stephenruggieri I don't know the author of this piece,but the John Coltrane's version is very famous!
ameblo.jp/galwayera/entry-12158453643.html Listening to this album "Ballad", Some People told that John Coltrane has become a simple mood tenor sax player. But I don't want to agree with this opinion. I've been loving this Coltrane's album titled "Ballad" which includes attractive songs like "Say it" or "Nancy". This Album shows us another enchantment which is different from "Giant steps". Mr. Michael Brecker is faithfully playing it, comparing with original playing of John Coltrane. Anyway this Performance is remarkably nice.
