I have some difficulties with The Deer Hunter that are probably an artifact of my personal defects, but I feel confident in attesting to the overwhelming beauty in Vilmos Zsigmond's depiction of place when he filmed Clairton. And Zsigmond's name arrives again and again like a recurrent spirit in the films that he touched. In the mediocrities and in the masterpieces, this man's vision is as true as any of the greatest visual artists of the 20th century.

Desperate Hours is great too. The studio chopped it to bits, but it's one of Rourke's best performances.
@PhilAndersonOutside Жыл бұрын
@@getheroutofthetruck Agree 100%. It's still quite good, but studio exces were paranoid it was over 2 hours and people would get bored, and concerned a scene with Lindsay Crouse and Kelly Lynch had "lesbian overtones" (probably did) and convinced Dino DeLaurentis to cut it. Supposedly the few people who saw Cimino's cut were very impressed. A similar situation happened with The Sicilian. It was also taken out of Cimino's hands and some 20 minutes of it were cut out.

the movie is about Vietnam whether He believes it or not.
@ralphcrisp28965 ай бұрын
You can't appreciate "The Deer Hunter," unless you are a deer hunter. First, let me say I agree it's about Vietnam. Now, a deer hunter learns that a Whitetail buck is a survival machine. Dinero knows this too. He reveres "The King of the Woods." I seem to recall Dinero shouting in Vietnam, "I'm the King of the Woods!" It's the spirit of the trophy whitetail he hunted in Pennsylvania that overshadows Dinero while he's in Vietnam....Hence the thesis is in the title, "The Deer Hunter." And it's the buck's survival instincts that keep Dinero alive. Life is a struggle to survive. Vietnam was a metaphor for life: stress, conflict, chaos, overwhelming odds of defeat. As Dinero shouted in crisis, "I'm the King of the Woods," that's the correct response to life's pressure moments. The intention of the movie, in my opinion, was to inspire, not just Vietnam veterans, but also others who need a reason to live.

Some aspects of 'The Deer Hunter' have not aged well but it is undeniable what a grand and beautiful piece of cinema it is. I reject all the hindsight contempt that the film has gotten in recent years by the cultural bean counters. It remains a great film.
