People can not tell (anymore) what are jokes (or rather things Trump says that he doesn't mean) and what he's serious about. And I think they can't because Trump rambles about such a lot of stuff that is obviously not real or will never be a real issue (e.g. shark vs. electricity) that they easily come to shrug off statements made by him that are in fact serious. If you're generally a serious person (talking seriously about issues, having values, having a normal thought process etc.), people can usually tell if and when you make a joke. The joke is the exception to your normal (serious) behavior. With Trump that is not the case. He has no core values, no normal thought processes, no general seriousness about people and their issues. What comes out of his mouth (and is in his head) is all mixed up! He is totally confused - I call that not having a "true core". And he passes that confusion on to others who do not know (anymore) what he really means and what he doesn't. Also, like attracts like, so it's likely they do not do critical thinking. They stay in that bubble and do not have time and distance from him to recover from the confusion to take a fresh look at him. And, he is entertaining. Enjoying entertainment opens us up to influence. That's why comedians who talk about real issues are successful: we open up because we relax and the facts find their way in. If you open up to Trump though, his confusion creeps in.
