@aussiegod42694 жыл бұрын
James Henderson no he didn’t
@aussiegod42694 жыл бұрын
James Henderson Yeah because he had no option. Anti treaty forces were adamant that they would not back down and would seek to restart the conflict with the Brits. Michael in response to the occupation of the four courts by anti treaty forces went to British again to see if he could get it amended so they didn’t have to swear allegiance to the crown. The Brits refused and basically stated that Michael get the situation under control or they would consider the uprising as a violation of the treaty and would thus invade the whole island. With either side not backing down Collins had to make a choice on what was best for the republic and the Irish people. Either side with de Valera and sacrifice everything he and the Irish people had fought for in the war for independence and die as a martyr to a lost cause, or side with the Brits and accept the burden of being deemed a traitor but knowing that the free state would be preserved and no more lives would be unnecessarily taken. He made that latter choice because it was by far the most sensible and thus attacked four court. Maybe you put yourself in Collins shoes before judging him and realise how twisted de Valera was. He didn’t betray the Ira they betrayed him because they weren’t willing to compromise
@aussiegod42694 жыл бұрын
James Henderson Mate ww1 had ended, the entire British army returned home and therefore had its full firepower directed against Ireland. And not just Britain but the entire empire including Australia, Canada, New Zealand and South Africa along with other colonial states. A small island with little to no resources wouldn’t last a week. It wouldn’t be an invasion it would be sport for the British.
@ajohara86644 жыл бұрын
James Henderson, they only offered a ceasefire due to international pressure, the british would easily have demolished the IRA, who hadn’t the provisions to fight the british in conventional warfare. It was either an oath of allegiance, or cromwell all over again, if I were collins, i would without hesitation swear allegiance to Britain, rather than see the people of ireland be slaughtered like cows, if you wouldn’t, you’re a traitor.
@ajohara86644 жыл бұрын

@davidrendall71957 жыл бұрын
Sorry I think that was meant for a different thread -De Valeras retort to Churchill in 1945. Collins is a very different fish and one worthy of study and respect. If were counting early admirers of Hitler we can include a great number of people like Joe Kennedy. By May 1945 there wasn't much support for him anywhere. Edward VIII certainly flirted with third reich but for all his soppy politics Chamberlain was only ever played by hitler, I don't think he was never an admirer.
I believe Michael Collins the father of our Nation accepted the treaty so that we could become a republic peacefully without any violence,and that Mr Collins thought that partition is a temporary measure,which means if the Northern Irish wanted to unify the British government would allow it. Long Live Michael Collins Victory to Ireland 🇮🇪

@Koulik Ghosh no it would never work we left the UK in the first place because because as far as Ireland was concerned it was a tyrant occupying force. You can say that's all in the past now but just look at Brexit northern Ireland and Scotland voted with good majorities to stay in the EU a perfect example of the democratic system its self working against the smaller countries in the union, and I think the present government who are willing to break international law can't be trusted having said that I think it's unfair to say England is stiffening the orher countries culture's and the monarchy in its self doesn't bother me although I do think that the visit to Scotland last week was just patronising head patting to get Scotland back in line as was the visit to Ireland in 2019, still that wouldn't be a reason in its self for Ireland not to rejoin the UK there are much bigger and more serious reasons than that.

@@memetopia5130 you can’t blame the English for misunderstanding Irish history (even though it’s their history as well) no more than you can blame some Irish who have forgotten their Irish history. As an Englishman, I understand both sides and frankly it staggers me that so many Irish people (especially the younger ones) are completely ignorant of their history particularly when it involves the the great men and women who fought for her freedom over the centuries. So...people who live in glass houses should not throw stones....unless you want to test me on that of course?

@@memetopia5130 OK so let’s put that to the test then she’ll we and if you can answer the following correctly then fair play to you my friend I bow to your detailed knowledge of Irish history which is more than know most Irish people I know. Question...Leaving Casement aside for a obvious reasons, under what order were the 15 executed in 1916 for their part in the Easter Rising, what was the date that order came into statute books and which one of the 15 was executed for the wrong crime. Should be easy enough?

since collins swore allegiance to britain he was in fact a traitor and a coward

+marley halpen- Churchill and Lloyd-George threatened Ireland with "great and terrible war" if Michael Collins didn't sign and that would have meant the mass slaughter of Irish men, women and children- a genocide that would have been even more devastating than Cromwell and An Gorta Mor combined! IMO,if he had refused ,he would have been partly responsible for the ensuing bloodbath! THEN he would have been a traitor and coward! He signed to save Irish lives and in no way had given up on gaining the Republic and without him and his sacrifice, we may still not have it to this day! Can you imagine THAT?

marley halpen many Irishmen were content like o Connell, redmond, Parnell, tone even we're content with king of Britain being king of Ireland . Also Marley the thousands of Irish in WW1, Boer War & police. Many ira men including my own great grandfather had relations with British army or police maybe their brothers

@@notamused3715 The threat of war was a bluff and Collins buckled. Churchill laughed in his memoirs how they ran rings around him and Griffith and they couldn't believe they signed. Collins unleashed a terrible war on Ireland and the British armed him to the teeth to do it. He was a traitor who admitted he signed his own death warrant and he was justly killed for his actions
