Michael Crawford on the Johnny Carson Show (1990) sings Tell me on a Sunday

FYI: this is actually from 4/2/1992. The first time I've heard this beautiful song in 32 years. And all because it keeps getting edited out of the reruns on Antenna TV! If they supposedly don't have time for it, I've got a way the syndicators could free up that time. Have _less_ Mando commercials!

Nobody sings or acts like Michael Crawford. I could listen to him forever. He sings everything with such passion and emotion and reduces me to tears. Thank goodness we have been blessed with this wonderful, talented, amazing man. Love you Michael

A devastating song sung to perfection. It ruins me every time I hear it.

I can't help but shed a tear EVERY time I hear this amazing song by this amazing voice. So beautiful, and heartfelt. The world was blessed when Michael Crawford started singing.

Michael lives the song as he sings it, just as he lived the role of the phantom when on stage. He puts his whole soul into whatever he does. The passion is so obvious in this. This is why he made the phantom his own; He really WAS the phantom. The voice is just so beautiful and no one can ever come close.

And the line he sang to utter perfection, that made me cry, was "Take the hurt out of all the pain" Just beautiful.

One of the great talents. A boy actor in 50s films, a goofy comic actor in 60s films and TV, a British TV superstar in the 70s, and then a major stage star (BARNUM and PHANTOM) in the 80s. And on top of it all, he possesses a flawless singing voice.

It sounds like he has a huge ability to work and learn, as well as talent. To do all those things so well... Somewhere I've heard him tell how he visited a singing coach, found it all strange to start with, and worked his way into it. He deserves so much credit for all his success.

I find that happens to me all the time! Funny thing is I eagerly tell my mom about this "new" beautiful song I downloaded on iTunes, and she responds of course I know that song, I used to sing it to you as a baby.

I saw Michael Crawford many times in 'Phantom of the Opera.' Nobody sings an emotional song like he does. He was the greatest 'live' performer I ever saw.

Um, How did you see him live? What was it like?? I saw him in "The Go Between" twice and I do agree, he plays emotion with honesty that is gut wrenching.

So many of his songs are about lost love. After reading his bio, the loss of the dearest women in his life, first his grandmother, then mother, last his wife (he admits it was his fault) may explain it. His successive relationships seem to short-lived, too bad he can't find somebody to grow old with. I'm available LOL

He said he was going to take lessons again, so I really hope he follows through. Unless something goes wrong, I expect he will - it wasn't like he waffled on returning to performing; he clearly still loves it. I would LOVE to hear him sing again, but as it would take awhile to get his voice back, I'd be thrilled to see him in a play in the meantime - give him something to sink his teeth into. He has so many fans who want to see him do something, anything.

Hi PurpleLassLaura, I think it's because Michael is just as amazing Ann actor as he is a singer. Rare combination, and makes for a phenomenal performer. He was very obviously born to do this, and luckily followed his potential. What would the world be like if we ALL ended up doing exactly what we are born to do? Pretty amazing, I think!

@bookworm7087 Most of his concerts were sold out shortly after they were announced. With good reason. He's such a charismatic person, and his performances, were out of this world. Complete with his talent for storytelling, it was a tour de force every time. I've been to a few of his concerts and would love to do so again.

I appreciate good writing and I was so impressed with Parcel. I laughed out loud and I cried - I'm not sure I've ever done that while reading. I recall him saying that he wrote the book as a cathartic experience - understandable given his childhood traumas. To me, he's still that boy in many ways, which might explain why he's so emotional in his performances. As to his concerts, I read that he would make a beeline for home afterwards instead of going to the stage door because he was so drained.

Yes, he did say recently in an interview that he would be open to doing some more of Frank Spencer. Probably as an accident prone grandfather now, I'd say. He sure has a huge ready made audience who would love to see that.

Phew. Emotional. What an Englishman he is. I would love to have been at the opening night of Phantom of the Opera,....to have seen Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman take the stage. That would have been such a privilege.

Funny you say Englishman -- to me this performance is very Irish, and Crawford's parentage is Irish even though he he was born in England.

I saw his guest appearance when it first aired so many years ago; and recorded it on VHS, but through moves, and a house fire it was lost. I’ve searched everywhere for this; it brings back so many memories. I have the cd; but nothing takes the place of the emotion found in a live performance. Thank-You so much for posting.

I've heard a number of different renditions of this song. Most notably by Sarah Brightman. I've never heard Crawford sing it before now. While I've always liked this song, I've never heard it sung quite this emotionally ever before. Michael is really singing it like a true breakup song. Fantastic job.

Isn't that amazing that he just fell into that other career? As he's said before, many things in his career have just "happened" - he never planned for them. Much as I adore him, you can only gauge charisma by seeing someone in person and every fan review I've read has mentioned that Michael has it in spades. What a complete experience one of his concerts must be. He doesn't just get up there, sing and that's it - he's an amazing. He's also one heck of a writer - have you read his book?

@bookworm7087 Yes, I've read his book and have owned it for many years. He's such a good writer, and he says he loves writing too. Wish he'd write another one, he has so much more to tell. His concerts are definitely a complete experience. When it's over, one is left wanting it to go on much longer, and it could but I guess he would need a rest, lol.

The musical was played under two different names over the years, Tell Me on a Sunday and Song and Dance. More often, the former.

So far he is still thinking of doing something after WoZ, be it a play or something else. I hope he keeps that thought as he was so content to stay in his New Zealand home. I know he says he needs to bring his voice back up to his standards, maybe he could do his sought after concerts again. I can only wish. So many would go to see him again.

Most of his long time followers know all about that detail of his personal life. Although one part of that is incorrect, most of us will know which part. So who cares, it takes nothing away from his incredible talent. Who in this world is perfect. how petty. But this is only a troll after all, what else can we expect?!!
