couldnt have said it better myself, i started reading crichton when i was around ten years old. Ive noticed much more not that i am approaching 30 that virtually no adult i know has the maturity and rationality emulated by him and the characters in his books. It really has become exhausting for me to have to try and talk to guys 20 plus years my senior who act like they are 15 still.

He sounds articulate, but so do some flat-Earthers. He's intellectually dim, not mature, when it comes to understanding nature's limits (see anthropocentric bias). There's something about doctors that makes many of them believe Man isn't subject to the laws of nature. Ben Carson is another example.

Enlightening and entertaining. Michael Crichton is remembered as one of the greatest writers of all time. The speakers here explain why consensus science is flawed. 57:14 "Fortunately, we can learn to manage complex systems. There are people who have studied how to do it and know how to do it. But it does take humility." To me, this is proof for Crichton's own humility. Often, his novels show a tragic, ironic perspective on human aspirations, with a complex world eventually spoiling all plans to control an unsafe environment. Here, he has a more optimistic, though reserved outlook.

The ideologue seeks _control_ , the _realist_ responds to needs and events as they come up - with some anticipation of what used to a long standing pattern, that is what he calls 'management', to understand that there's no mathematical certainty in an imponderable life, makes life even possible - if the outcome were certain as mere astronomical extinction, people would loose their faith in themselves. It is a cultural issue - the delusion of _secular utopian_ thinking.

@pupfriend
@pupfriend 4 жыл бұрын
@@roc7880 Yes, COVID is killing people. My great aunt died from it. She was almost 100. But, it turns out what I said above holds true two months later and will be true when this is all said and done. The cure is worse than the disease. Without the economy, there is no healthcare, which kills people. People are foregoing "elective" procedures, which means other ailments, like cancer, which would have been caught earlier are being allowed to metastasize, which will kill people. The mental health problems that come with unemployment will be severe as well, and will kill people. Some economists have claimed the ripple effect of just a 1% rise in unemployment results in 40k additional deaths. Victims of abuse (mostly women and children) are being trapped in their homes with their abusers. This disease is real, but it targets the old and the infirmed, not the vast majority of working aged individuals. Since when does a targeted risk warrant mass shutdowns? Working age people have a better chance of dying in a car accident than from COVID. None of the projections from the "experts" came to pass. The hospitals were not overrun, the ventilators requested by the states were never used, the projected deaths, and sick numbers never came to pass. And you might think, -Well that's because we shut down. And if you think that, you'd be wrong. States that didn't shut down and countries that didn't shut down have not had a material difference in results than states and countries that did. But their economies are largely intact. To add to the nonsense, we were all told the shutdown was to flatten the curve and not overrun the hospitals. Yet, the hospitals are largely empty!! Nurses in protective gear are making choreographed danced routines wearing full PPE. ABC literally fabricated long lines at a testing center for a story. Health workers are being furloughed across the country. The great irony of Michael Crichton's Chernobyl story was that misinformation was a greater cause of human misery than the disaster itself. With COVID, the misinformation that led to the government's reaction will be a greater cause of misery than the disease itself. Don't buy into fear porn.

How pleased Michael would have been had he been able to see how they finally realised what they had to do for Yellowstone to regenerate: leave it alone. They finally decided purely to bring back the wolves, but deep into the park, away from the bordering farms. They started to predate on the elk, who moved away from the valleys. The Aspens began to regenerate, which cleaned up the sluggish rivers, and they began running clear and fast, the fish stocks went up, the beavers came back. The river began to flow fast and clear, and started to over run the banks, bringing back the grasses which brought back small mammals. Rocks began to be eroded into different patterns. With the increase in small mammals the eagles and bigger birds came back. And all they did, all they ever had to do, was just leave it alone.

"Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled." - Crichton I've quoted this many times in various debates, but I never knew he had spoken publicly like this until watching this video. I don't even recall the media mentioning his death (though I'm sure it was briefly mentioned). I started reading Micro, which started out fantastic, but I feel that I can detect the moment Crichton's disease got the better of him as the suspense took a plunge (possibly due to the other writer taking over the work). I'll have to finish it to see if it picks up again. Anyhow, if you enjoyed Crichton books you'd probably enjoy reading The Martian. That was the most recent book that took my imagination to the depths Crichton was capable of. As with most of Crichton's books turned screenplays, the book is way better.

The book, while a work of fiction, used factual graphs and references/footnotes. You'd be amazed what you can learn from fiction these days. Most science fiction writers do phenomenal research and Crichton, being a physician, did not fail on this count. If you watched the speech, you know a part of the reality that was contained in the book. Yellowstone is but one example of the historical record that was included in the book.

True, what people fail to realize that science is governed by people and people are governed by money. They will say what ever you want hear as long as they are being paid. I believe there is a climate problem but am not convinced we caused it all or even a fraction. Glaciers melt glaciers freeze, they have doing this for eons. Newspapers sell more on hate then puppy stories that’s why you read so many hate articles. Doctors can be bought by drug companies and are. Even in archaeology, they will not change their dogma even with proof staring them right in the eye. People also do not like being wrong. They will fight you tooth and nail, even when they know they are wrong and you prove it to them. There are only a handful sciences that I can trust fully, rocket science is one that comes to mind because if someone is wrong about their calculation someone else dies. Undeniable proof and they fix it.

When people ask me if I buy organic vegetables I tell them when they affordable otherwise no. They ask aren’t you afraid of what’s in those non organic. I tell them my parents came to the U S in 1950. My mother purchased what ever produce looked the best and a reasonably priced. These were times of some the worst pesticides were used and now banned. If you asked my mother if she purchased organic food she would not know what you were taking about. I was fed this produce growing up. My father died kind of young 68 but he was a chain smoker and smoking since the age of eight. So no wonder he got throat cancer. He was also an alcoholic and diabetic. My mother only drank wine on occasion and never smoked lived until 94. I turned 70 this year. I did smoked until I was 28 and quit because my cough was sounding like my father. I couldn’t breath. Ate like the US food pyramid suggested and gained too much weight and was developing diabetes. At 64 I decided to do something about it and did research. Both of my parents were diabetic as well as both sides of my family. When I looked what the consensus was on food it was that fat was the problem. What I found out that at least in my family it was carbs. They were very high in carbs. In fact I would say 76% or more of what we eat was carbs. Carbs which turns into sugar in our system was at such a high rate that everyone was diabetic. Once I lowered the carbs my weight came off, my sugar stabilized and no longer heading in their direction. All my doctor labs are perfect for most people a lot younger then me and don’t need any medication. Food is my medicine. If I would listened to science I would eating the same way and killing my self. I now eat whatever I want but just pay more attention of how much of what. Watch the sugar, wheat, rice, potatoes, etc. And as long as it’s natural fat I eat as much as I want. Animal, olive oil, coconut oil, talo, lard,etc. in fact tests of my heart showed improvement from 5 year prior. And not that was bad to begin with. Now I am skeptical about all science when money is involved. Am the sheep that became the lion…..I think I’ll have nice cup of carcinogenic coffee now….

Regarding the fellow who talked about chemicals that are carcinogenic. I remember one study that found two chemicals in broccoli that separately caused/promoted cancer but when given together they suppressed/prevented cancer. No two or more pesticides, herbicides or fungicides suppress cancer. This lack of discussion is called an error on his part of omission. He doesn't mention the difference between the chemicals in whole foods versus the codes, poisons, from the lab. Chemistry is complex. Cyanide is toxic but is just one atom of carbon and one atom of nitrogen, yet when ingested it binds with hemoglobin and prevents the transport of oxygen.

Almost no one talks about the limits of knowing, yet that is what Complexity teaches us. As the philosopher Immanuel Kant has written we can only observe phenomena. Data sufficient to make even a preliminary guess will continue to evade us. Yet half baked methodology is what is cited to try to persuade us. It is scaremongering and we have an obligation to reject it wholesale.

The narrative of "oh, look at the wise Amerindians and how they were in tune with nature" and how it's changed over time very entertaining. The fundamental premise of "these noble people are so much wiser and better than us and we stand to learn much from them" has remained, but what we have to learn from them, why they're noble, how they're actually wiser or better has changed drastically and to the point of self contradiction several times over - and always in alignment with the political and social inclinations of the person repeating it. I think that is very amusing.

jaranarm That's correct : Crichton (pronounced CRY-TAWN) is a small village in Midlothian, Scotland, around 2 miles south of Pathhead and the same east of Gorebridge. The name is derived from the Gaelic word crioch, which means border, and the Old English word toune which means farm or settlement. To the west of the village is the 15th-century parish church, formerly a collegiate church, established by William Crichton, 1st Lord Crichton, who served as Lord Chancellor of Scotland from 1439 to 1453. To the south of the church is Crichton Castle, begun in the late 14th century by William's father John de Crichton, and featuring a fine 16th-century Italianate courtyard façade.
