democracynow.org - On Wednesday night, President Obama addressed the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia and implored the nation to vote for Hillary Clinton. As Obama seeks to pass the torch to his secretary of state, we host a debate on Hillary Clinton, her rival Donald Trump and President Obama’s legacy between Princeton University professor Eddie Glaude and Georgetown University professor Michael Eric Dyson. Glaude’s most recent book is "Democracy in Black: How Race Still Enslaves the American Soul," and he recently wrote an article for Time magazine headlined "My Democratic Problem with Voting for Hillary Clinton." Dyson is the author of "The Black Presidency: Barack Obama and the Politics of Race in America" and wrote a cover article for the New Republic titled, "Yes She Can: Why Hillary Clinton Will Do More for Black People Than Obama."

@@juliansearcie1758 I agree that we have to get our own lives in order, and when we have done that we need to reach back and help others who are still in need. My husband and I are college graduates and our daughters graduated from Fordham Law School and Columbia University. That is the kind of help that I received and I think we need to keep making a positive difference in the lives of others.

The idea of voting for the lesser of two evils is the most foolish thing I have ever heard or in the least in lock step with it. Assuming we accept the narrative of American exceptionalism and that we are all of the great things that people speak of. How do we reconcile that with the fact that the final two candidates who are supposed to represent the best of what this country (corporation) has to offer is relegated to one the lesser of two evils? As I am writing this in 2019 Drumpf lost by the largest margin in history to Killary, but the electoral college chose him anyway, so where does the voting for the lesser of two evils come into place! How did Drumpf winning become such a major threat to black folks as Dyson would put it? Dyson is bought and paid for and I don't see him putting the same fervor now against abolishing the electoral college. PEACE!

It's unfortunate how often Dyson resorts to straw-man arguments - namely, acting as though all of Glaude's carefully explained points are invalid because Cory Booker said good things about his book.

Micheal Eric Dyson sure does use a lot of words to express the usual apologetics for Hillary - don't blame her for Bill Clinton's policies (even though she often takes credit for them when its convenient), we have to defeat Trump at all costs, its OK that Hillary's a corporate shill because every one else in Washington is, etc. All style very little substance.

Yet another cowardly Hillary supporter, who can't wait to surrender so that he can surrender again in another four years, and another four after that, and four later, until he is in a habit of surrender. However, we're starting to get arrests for election fraud, and a Chinese billionaire was arrested for bribery and will be questioned about his role in helping the Clintons violate campaign finance laws. If they're willing to arrest a billionaire for mere bribery, how long can Hillary stay above the law? If Hillary goes down, the cowards will have to vote for a decent candidate if they want to stop Trump. Though most likely they'd just switch to Trump instead.

💭 We Should Do Write In Votes for 1st Lady Michelle Obama......I'm in Columbus, Ohio. Most of the mixed groups if people I know-know,-know say they are either not voting or are voting for "No Choice Hillary Clinton"; the better of two candidates who are not worthy of a vote. *I believe we don't have to take it, we can vote someone-else in. I'd go for a write-in vote for 1st Lady Michelle Obama. She would be much better & knows the ropes already!

I truly understand both points. Eddie Glaude is saying no trade off when it comes to Trump nor Hillary. We which I mean as black folks, we are our own worse enemy. Getting black folks together and focus on the needs of what we need to do. It's not an easy task. So many of my black folks are caught up in this systemic and slave mentality. So what are we to do.

@ MsFreethepeople I like your thinking. Our vote is leverage and power, and it should be highly esteemed, cherished, and guarded no less than we esteem and guard our integrity. Give me the Eddie Glaude’s of the world. Love his philosophy, integrity, and strategy. ‘The lesser of two evils’ philosophy has failed, for what, almost two centuries now! The whole act and idea of choosing ‘the less of two evils’ is unadulterated self contradiction. Can you imagine it, “I hate you less than this guy hates you, vote for me.”! Death is better than a vote for either of such ‘candidates.’ Glaude has substance and life in his words, Dyson only has words. Enough already! Down with the race and poverty pimps of the world... calling Michael Eric Dyson!

***** Have you seen her VP-pick? And the outlines of the transitional team she's putting together? - very pro-TPP - very pro-Fracking - very pro-Wall Street - very against net-neutrality I'm sure Clinton is behind the scenes pushing Obama to sign TPP in the lame-duck session, so she can claim innocence. She is pivotting to the very right, and she knows she can, because people like you will vote for her regardless, just because you have been made to fear the Trump. Vote Clinton, and be prepared to spend the rest of your life in indentured servitude to the (international) corporations
