Great movie. Steve McQueen is a real filmmaker, he understands the medium a lot better than so many other directors.

I decided to find another interview after the first 3 minutes. I feel sorry that Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender had to spend that long explaining what shouldn't be presented as such a point of controversy, but rather just a normal feature of realism in film.

noface181 Yeah, I know. He's eyes are such a light shade of blue, that they're almost silver, & they seem to change intensity in different lighting. When the camera zooms in real close, you can see a thin black ring around the edge of the iris. Not too many people have that trait.

I dunno why this interviewer bothers me a little. The film isn't really about pornography or sex or the effect of sexual imagery in advertising on the male psyche, its really about addiction as a whole. People with addictive personalities can be addicted to anything, its about fulfilling a kind of emptiness and emotional/psychological impoverishment via overindulgence in whatever said obsession is.

that conversation at the start, where they all don't understand why female nudity is so much more pervasive than male nudity... the word of explanation they are looking for is "patriarchy"
@lanceaugust6 ай бұрын
It is more complicated than that. Female beauty is prized and has economic value. People buy Sports Illustrated because beautiful models appear nearly naked. Male nudity by contrast is not something that can be monetized.

Great interview. Can't wait to see Shame. I've watched the trailer too many times!!
@LinxFraulein10 жыл бұрын
Look at the expression on Fassy's face from 1:34-1:36. He laughs at the interviewer's stupid joke as always, polite to a T. But note how his smile fades so quickly. I think it just goes to show - he is *TIRED* of this s--t. And why shouldn't he be? I know *I* would be. Shame was such a great movie about a very real problem, and *all* anybody ever asks him about is the four-second scene where he got it out for the camera. It's so immature. I'm longing for the day when he finally snaps and tells an interviewer to shut up. God, *that'll* be worth seeing.
@HighOnCaffine96239 жыл бұрын
he should've done that a long time ago, we all would've understood. even now, four years later, he still keeps being reminded of that one insignificant scene from Shame where his penis appears and it's annoying as hell. if he does snap, it's well-deserved, but he won't because he appears to be such a gentleman. hell, when TMZ stalked him down a block to ask him about the same shit he went along with it and kinda laughed it off.
@LinxFraulein9 жыл бұрын
That's terrible. I have such a love-hate thing going on with him right now. On the one hand I adore him to bits because he's such a great actor and seems like a nice guy, but his compliance really gets on my nerves. I wish that he would stand up for himself more. Otherwise it's going to be *ten years* since Shame came out and he'll still be answering questions about *that* scene in every goddamn interview...
@pardennen44739 жыл бұрын
+Links Fraulein He does express his displeasure in two interviews I've seen - one with Josh Horowitz for MTV and one with Peter Travers for ABC. In both cases the interviewer asked him to his face about his penis (not even about the scene) and he doesn't play along.
@LinxFraulein9 жыл бұрын
+Par Dennen Well, that's a good start I suppose. Baby steps. But he'll need to be a bit more forceful than that if he ever wants people to stop baiting him cold turkey.

There is one major reason why both male nudity and male erections don't appear in movies: men are massively intimidated by both, for fear of their own sexual inadequacy, and movies are controlled by men. Grow up, guys. And Michael makes the greatest point: nauseating levels of violence are accepted with aplomb, while a scene of a man nude is met with shock or outrage. And a male erection is strictly forbidden in totality - only an erection at 1/3 of full arousal is allowed in american cinema.
@Auntkekebaby12 жыл бұрын

I didn’t like the interviewer at all, he seems to keep pushing topics that Michael and Steve already explained (brilliantly, I might add). On the other hand, the way that Michael and Steve talked about the film and about the characters was amazing. They explained it really well and in a really deep, meaningful and realistic way. I felt bad for them in this interview, but they were incredible as always

Shame is a movie beautifully made and structured, which features a formidable cast and where Steve (the film director) saw in Michael enough talent to play a s3x addict whose live seems interrupted when his sister (Carey Mulligan) appears, who's just lloking for company to get heard.

To the missing reply I received...True, not only men control filmmaking in hollywood. There are some female directors. But it's not the directors saying what goes. It's the producers. It's the hollywood film review boards. And there is still no legitimate reason for a complete erection to NOT be showable in films. It is the inherent discomfort with sexuality generally in our schizophrenic/Puritanical/sexual society that disallows it. It is, ironically, people's shame with sex that disallows it.

@63Tubeless The interviewer, Jian Gohmeshi, is Canadian. I don't care for him as an interviewer or vocalist, I think he'd do better as a host rather than an interviewer. I don't feel McQueen or Fassbender were "on trial"; directors & actors are critiqued, they expect this as part of their daily work. I've resided in many areas of the U.S.A. and I can assure you it is extremely RARE to see or experience gun violence in everyday American life. Firearms don't kill people HUMANS kill people.
