I think the reason they don’t revisit the trauma that Brandon and Sissy experienced that led to his sex addiction or her tendency towards self harm was to show that regardless of how intense your former traumatic experiences are they can lead towards a life that is heavily influenced by those scars. If I saw a scene that showed what it was like for them to move to the States or what their parents were like, I think I would have established a cause and effect relationship that makes their experience more unique when in reality the problems they face could be experienced by anyone in western society

Wow, that's a really good take! It doesn't matter what led them to this point because what's important is the present and what they're currently dealing with. I think if they were to show what caused their trauma, it could've led some of the audience to compare experiences or draw real life conclusions when in reality traumatic causes are very nuanced and personal. When you put it like that, I think leaving their trauma to our own interpretation was the appropriate creative decision. I appreciate the insight, I've never thought about it like that and it's a very mature perspective, so thank you.

@@dionendc By the way @:1:39, that's not the "next time" he's on the train. That's from the same incident. It would be quite a coincidence if that woman was wearing the exact same clothes and seated in the exact same place in the carriage relative to Brandon.

Beautiful analysis. Came to the same conclusion as me. I just posted a comment saying the same on a different KZbin analysis of this. Coming here to find my theory as a top comment was definetly a confidence boost

That's so great to hear! However you choose to help yourself, just know that it's a slow process and it's not always steady. Relapsing or not making more progress doesn't mean it's not working, maybe you need to give yourself more time to see things get better or at worse try something else. If you believe in yourself that you can make this change, then there's nothing stopping you and I really wish nothing but the best for you. You're doing the right thing and good luck on your personal journey.

Sex is probably one of the movie's main themes and when it becomes a drug in your daily life, you get in trouble. Well, that's what Brandon's character lives for.

Your analysis on that film is still relevant up to tjis day. Due to the rising cases of r***e in my country the Philippines, I could only wish to condemn to the victims. Most of these are of family issues.
@dionendc

That's really sad to hear, honestly it's depressing when you hear someone gets victimised like that by someone in their family. Too often you'd hear the reason why it goes on is because the family can't afford one of their members going to jail, but does that mean the women have to live in hell until they leave the house? Personally what I'm hoping for is for more support groups and such to help these women get out of these homes and to live the normal life they deserve, it's very idealistic and probably dumb but still my heart truly goes out to all of them.

Glad this video found me. I've always loved this movie because of addiction being important to talk about, but I never considered hyper sexuality as an addiction. I was ignorant to that, unfortunately

I really liked this film. The one thing I wasn't sure of was whether implying that Brandon and Sissy were abused as children was the right choice. To me, it would be more interesting if Brandon just had porn/sex addiction innately, without having been abused.

Well people dont act like B without trauma. His behaviour _is_ a reaction to trauma, he reenacts his childhood trauma as an adult from a position of power/choice. This is like _standard_ therapy stuff.

But there are loads of people who compulsively waste all their free time watching pornography who haven't been abused. The film blaming it all on abuse is a bit of cliché.@@helenestiernstrand6575

You think that’s a normal sibling relationship? Did we watch the same film????
@dionendc
@dionendc 2 ай бұрын
I'm not sure how I came across as that, but I do want to make it clear that I did not mean that their relationship was normal. What I meant to say that it was natural and relatable, in the sense that I personally can understand how he still cares about and how he shows it despite how much he's trying to push her away. I feel like family dynamics (for as toxic as it can sometimes be) are a relatable way of showing how we can both love people while still wanting them to be away from us.

There are a lot of subtle hints in the movie that can be taken in one way or another and that's why I think personal interpretation and discourse are good for a movie like this. From what I've seen in the film and how I personally understood it, this video is what I came away with but it would be nice to learn what you and others think of their story.

underated video well done. oh and that initial scene at the train.... don't you think she crossed her legs as a way to try and remove the ring? but then she couldn't and started regretting her lustful feelings?
@dionendc
@dionendc 3 жыл бұрын
That's definitely possible, considering she was more welcoming to his flirting at the end of the movie so she could've considered it as early as you say. In my opinion though I think she just didn't expect the move that day and had to think about it more because like you said, she started regretting her lustful feelings at the spot. Saw Daniel again at the train and wanted it but that's where the movie ends and it's up to us to determine how things went down.
