The story: What makes this so iconic and history making it’s not just the moonwalk itself. Up until this performance, Michael’s only stand out was when he did off the wall. It was a notable accomplishment, but he still had not established himself as a solo superstar. This event Motown 25, was a reunion for all of Motown‘s biggest stars to come back. The Jackson Five was one of Motown‘s most iconic groups, so they were expected to be there. All of the brothers agreed, except Michael. Michael not only wanted to separate himself from his brothers, he was also tired of doing television because he felt he had been overexposed doing the Jackson Family Variety TV Shows. No one could convince him, except Barry Gordy. But Michael only agreed to do it if he got to perform Billie Jean. Gordy was very reluctant because this was supposed to be about Motown with Motown songs. With Michael wouldn’t budge. This was the time, he knew it. So Gordy gave in. Michael and his brothers rehearsed their performance several times, and Michael even directed the performance to make sure the camera hit all the right angles. But no one knew what he was going to do on the second half in his solo spot. He wanted to make sure that he was able to misdirect the audience so that his hat would appear out of nowhere on the ground. Not even his brothers knew what was going to happen. The tone, style, and dance was so different, that the audience was captivated. But no one saw the Moonwalk coming. The dance had actually been around in the streets known as the backslide (The moonwalk was another dance), and he once saw it performed on soul train by Jeffrey Daniels (some reports say a dancer named Casper). He had them teach him to dance, and they thought he was a little stiff. But they were not prepared for how well he did when he performed it as the moonwalk. Not only did he perform at well, he enhanced the dance. For so long he had been practicing it and saving it for a special moment. Despite how monumental the performance was, Michael was so upset because he didn’t stand frozen on his toes at the end long enough. He was so disappointed that he cried afterward. The only two things that made him feel better were 1) a boy afterward told him how incredible his performance was. It made him so happy because he said children didn’t lie. 2) one of his idols, Fred Astaire, called him and told him “you’re one hell of a dancer!”

A lot of people have said stuff about this performance because it is a watershed moment and one of the most historical moments in music history so I won’t repeat those. But I will add that it’s hard to understand the climate in which this happened because we have the internet and social media today not to mention phones and tablets and places to see whatever whenever. None of that existed then. All you had was tv. And music videos were still pretty new. To see artists, you had to catch them live or a tc special or music video. That’s it. Billy Jean was ALREADY #1 on the charts when this special hit but people had only seen the video. This is the first live performance and according to his biography I read, he did so much rehearsing with the brothers to get the Jackson’s part down that he never worked out the routine for Billy Jean until that moment. The performance you see there he was making up as he went along for the most part. And he nailed it just like he did the vocals for Billy Jean in one take. After that night Billy Jean and the Thriller album went into the stratosphere. Again, I point out that it was already #1 so you can imagine. One other thing I want to point out is that the performance was so huge that people forget that Motown 25 was filled with some of the greatest music stars in history with great performances. And people pretty much don’t remember them because it was all overshadowed by the Billy Jean performance. So Barry was right to be against giving MJ a solo spot. He literally turned Motown 25 which was a celebration of Barry White and all the great Motown acts all about him. You think I’m wrong? Ask the little group that immediately followed that performance and debuted for the first time ever. Their name is Debarge. And they actually debuted “All This Love” on Motown 25.

So I was 7 years old when this performance catapulted michael into another stratosphere and I was hooked. After this the "Beat It" song dropped. I was living in Queens and begged my mother for a Michael Jackson jacket with all the zippers but they were ridiculously expensive. We were kinda poor so she bought me a fake leather version that was red. I was living in Queens NY and was the only white kid in my apartment building and was being picked on so I put on my red jacket, listened to the Beat It song and walked to my bus stop and I punched the neighborhood bully in the face, LMFAO. I kid you not, true story. We became best friends after that and was like Bubba Gump.

Growing listening to the Jackson 5, this performance was so special because it was the first time all the brothers came out to perform together since Michael and Jermaine left the group. It was such an iconic moment they were the gems of the Motown sound. And then Michael performed Billie Jean live for the first time. And the rest is history.

The jacket that Michael had on was his mother's. He found out that it fit him and told all his brothers to wear something "glittery". It must've worked. Also, motown 25 was on NBC. At 7pm. No football or basketball games were on because of Motown in 1983. The next person after Michael Jackson was-get this- Debarge. Then they showed a video of Rick James. I think they closed the show with Diana Ross and the Supremes. Pretty much after "Billie Jean", nobody paid attention until Diana Ross came out. Eh... Oh, and one more thing. I'd personally would appreciate if you didn't tell your girlfriend or wife (not sure) to shut up. I personally think it's a little rough and rude. If you like having Michael Jackson on your channel, believe me, I'm not a hater. But sometimes I know you get excited (me too. I'm a MAJOR Michael Jackson fan), but make your videos more even.
