They're literally just playing the track from the album. I think it was because it was a Motown show, they didn't want the band to play a song from a different label. Just before this Billie Jean performance he did the classic Jackson 5 songs with his brothers, and Michael only wanted to be a part of it if he got to perform Billie Jean as well.

I remember seeing a documentary about this performance. At the end of the moonwalk, he spins, then goes up to his tip toes. But he lost his balance, and only stayed on his toes a fraction of the time he planned. He was so embarrassed that everyone would know. Um....did you notice? Now that I know, I can see that toe bit is cut pretty short, but impossible to know if he planned it that way, or planned to be on his toes longer.

I just turned 14, and received the "Thriller" album as a birthday gift, a month before the MOTOWN 25 event aired. After that night, everyone in the 8th grade, was trying to moonwalk into our classrooms.

Great video. As fan of Michael since childhood let me wade in on the whole live or not debate. I've seen this video probably thousands of times, I've heard the original track even more, it is all exactly the same. There are parts where his mouth is not even moving when his voice comes out, right before he goes on his toes whilst holding the microphone he does that to hide he can't mouth all of the vocals right before it, at one point you see the musicians behind him just clapping before being reminded on the headset they're supposed to be "performing" not watching (a testament to his skill in this performance), and right at the very end the track literally fades out - including the instruments and vocals. There are no back up singers because it's all his voice, all of the back up you hear is him recorded as it is on the original track. He is not singing along with himself because it sounds exactly like the record in every way, including the two part harmony where you said it sounds like he's singing with himself (he is, good ear, but on the record) and as he changes registers is also on the record, and that's because it is the record. My dad who saw this live on tv swears it was live, but was then forced to admit he just wanted to believe that. It's so hard to tell with MJ because he is very capable of singing perfectly live despite all the movement and dancing, but I imagine the producers et al told him to do this to sell more copies. Hell if it didn't work lol

Not many people know this but MJ agreed to perform on this show with his brothers (Mowtown 25, to celebrate Mowtown anniversary) on one condition. He'll perform with his brothers if he can have a solo performance and perform his own new song which is Billie Jean (the only song in the entire show not produced by Mowtown) after their group performance.

This was a live performance at that time, but remember you a watching a piece of what is now music history this was in 1983 and I remember seeing it on tv for the first time myself and I thought I’d tell you that this song was revolutionary for its time the technology for that time I believe this was a lie performance, and this was only performed because Michael asked for this one TV spot. He has never done any other television since then he does have an interview with Oprah, but that wasn’t until 1993. None of us knew it at that time, but we were watching a kings coronation. Michael was not lip-synching at that time. Michael was using his genuine voice on that day he would not cheat or lie, especially to his fans.

Billie Jean...My brother did not like this song because it "hit too close to home".. After a few months he got back together with his ex-girlfriend for one night. A few months later she was pregnant filing for welfare, named him as the father, and they were coming after him for child support. He knew it wasn't his and the due date was a month too late, but the authorizes were aggressive and demanded that he pay for a test but he refused to pay for it. Finally they did the test and it came back 100% not his. The baby was born with a harden skull and other birth defects. She said that she lied because the father was married and had kids. When we met her, my wife was warned about her father and .........yes. You would guess right.

It was definitely live because first of all, at that time, autotune and lip sync weren’t as prominent as it is now, MJ was a perfectionist, choosing the easy way was never an option because it would not have been as perfect as choosing to actually perform it so that he can adapt every bit of his performance to the stage, the crowd etc. AND also if I’m not wrong, he was in a conflict with his label at that time. He had to fight his way to perform this that night cause they didn’t want to let him. So he kinda had to prove himself to them so lip syncing was not an option

Now maybe I’m just delusional but if he’s lip syncing which I don’t argue, is possible, I think it was most likely forced on him. Because I really believe MJ wouldn’t choose the easy way by himself. He trained his whole life to perfect everything, it’s not for him to be lip syncing when he can actually give this exact performance live without a single mistake.

That's lip sync all day long. It sounds EXACTLY like the recording. Not knocking anything he did in his career, but sync performances have been a reality long before he ever hit the stage, and the dancing was the focal point. That needed to be spot on for this. Later on, in concert he probably did sing it, but not on this one.😊
