To me, Michael Jackson's classic #1 hit, "Dirty Diana" is the PERFECT R&B/Rock hybrid song! MJ was what I refer to as a 'vocal chemeloen', which meant he could sing in VARIOUS MUSICAL GENRES. Now listen to his other #1 classic song, "Man In the Mirror". That's more in the gospel/R&B style but he sings it PERFECTLY!!! Ah, he could sing ANYTHING, YES he could! His dance skills just ADDED to his SEX APPEAL!!
