Honestly, this part of the movie scared a ton of kids back in the day. There are very tense situations in this movie that you didn't really see in children's media at the time. Even though this movie is very kid friendly at certain points, I don't think it was aimed necessarily at children to begin with.

I came here to make sure I actually seen this movie and didn’t dream it up. It’s been over 30 years since I seen it. And I’ve never met anyone who remembers it. Or even heard of it. And I’ve smoked a ton of weed since too. Not anymore though, and I quite in the strangest way possible. And it began when I realized I hadn’t smoked in a week. That week turned into a month, that month a year. And that year into 10. Maybe I just finally grew up. Kids, a wife and a life.

Soo, I just watched how Michael Jackson transformed into a Cyborg, then into a Battlemech sporting more Rockets and Artillery than the Chinese Army (proceeding to bust open some huge Crate of Kickass in ANY Direction, by the way) and THEN into a Huge Spaceship that destroys the Badguy with some sort of Sonic Beam??
