What gets me was good he was when he was 10 years old. You go back to and listen to his early stuff like "Who's Lovin' You", "Got To Be There", "I wanna be where you are", and "Maybe Tomorrow". It still is rare to find someone that young and that soulful in their tone and delivery of vocals.

Even today, modern producers are studying his background vocals and harmonies. And they marvel at the amount of layers in each track. THIS was MJ's superpower: his ability to harmonize with EACH take so consistently and so fluidly. It was audio velvet.

This is MAGNIFICENT! Read the book "Michael Jackson; the magic and the madness" by Randy Terrabellali as well as the 25th anniversary CD of "off the wall" with special interviews with Quincy Jones and Rod Temperton. Michael was still on the Destiny album tour (1978-1979) with his brothers when he was recording songs for "off the wall". Really burning his candle at both ends, but when your young you love that kind of pace! Quincy said Michael was the ultimate artist, easy to work with and did his home work so when he walked in the studio he was prepared and ready to go. No fooling around trying to figure out how to approach a song in a certain way. He knew what he wanted and would stay up all night learning the lyrics of a song so he wouldn't have to read it off a sheet. Quincy said Michael would come in ready and lay down three or four backgrounds in 3 or 4 part harmony on 3 different songs, then come in the next day and do the leads. Quincy was amazed at much they got done in a short time. Michael had "instinctively rhythmic senses" and those grunts, hiccups and squeals were his signature way of keep a pace and timing for moving through a song and giving it personality a flair! He was BRILLIANT!

That’s that good ol’ Motown grooming. The J5 recorded over 450 songs while at Motown. That does not include MJs solo songs, As well as the solo Jermaine and Jackie songs that MJ sang backup. That is over a 6 year span… INSANE. And all of that recording was in between touring, TV appearances, Concerts and Live Shows. MJ used that experience, work ethic and eagerness to craft the best albums of all time , and the best album of all time, “Off the Wall” (IMO). And to think, those vocal hiccups started once MJs voice noticeably changed during the “Get it Together” album. The man was a genius at 14!!

AMAZING! You can hear that he does all his background and harmony vocals him self. "Tonight, gotta leave that 9 to 5 up on the shelf, and just enjoy yourself. Groove, let the madness in the music get to you. Life ain't so bad at all...alllll....if you live it off the wall." All four upper and lower vocals are Michael's. He's got a great natural high tenor voice. High falsetto; "life ain't so bad at all. Live your life off the wall!" (Live life off the wall). All are his vocals! Quincy Jones said that while they were recording "Off the Wall" Michael was still on the Destiny tour with his brother's. He would fly back and forth, record some stuff with quincy Jones, then jump back on a flight to get back on stage. He was burning his candle at both ends making that album and still he was fantastic! Quincy also said Michael was great to work with because he knew the songs by heart. He did his home work so when he walked in the studio he was ready. Not fooling around deciding how to approach a song. Studio time is very expensive, even back then and Michael was a "dream artist" because he worked hard. He was not lazy. This is just a sample of how AMAZING he was, and still had fun! I love the part "gotta hide your inhibitions, gotta let that fool loose deep inside your soul. Wanna see an exhibition......ohhhhp!!!!!! Better do it now before you get to old!" Lol......that's his unique finger print! This accapella version of "off the wall" is fascinating to hear. He was a brilliant vocalist and had his own style besides having the actual talent for REAL singing. Not auto tuning here. Pure talent!

Bruce Swedien was obsessed with getting as many clean tracks as possible and eventually married two 32 track setups to get a 64 track setup for composing on tape. today it's nothing; computers mean INFINITE tracks perfectly synched but Bruce was on a MISSION. The hisotry of multi track goes way back to Les Paul and even decades before him Raymond Scott. Many geniuses worked relentlessly to get this technology before we dreamed of having it on a pc or our PHONES. With four and eight tracks they were always "bouncing down " by combining work tracks: ALL of the harmony vocal tracks would have to have been married together and unless you kept a copy of every single work tape there was no turning back once you had bounced them down..... Back in the Motown days if an artist wanted to fix a note or phrase on a vocal tape it meant "punching in" for mere seconds over a previous take . It was terrifying and hair raising for engineers. Marvin Gaye took it to the extreme and drove engineers crazy. Dusty Springfield heard about it and recorded that way for the rest of her life (be sure to look for Neil Tenant's very amusing recollection of recording "Nothing Has Been Proved"). With Quincy and Bruce , Michael had the state of the art at his disposal. An astounding amount of detail was put into this album and Thriller.

That intro.. exposes Michael's character... Mysterious, jokingly, soothingly and uplifting..... A whole song could be created from just that intro ... The intro is better than the whole song!

The first time I heard this song was Halloween 1979, when I was 5. This Song is My LIFE. Thank you Mike and Rod.

I was in high school when I got my first record player/speakers with an 8-trac player, You Ole heads know. Off the Wall came out my first 8-trac. Played it to death. God blessed this man with so much talent and humility. Only one MJ as in Michael, you are missed.

It’s a mix of MJ by himself and a group of other people. I wonder who they are.
