That is a voice and talent of a 19, 20-year-old at the time. As a singer and independent recording artist, I know how much work, focus and dedication went into creating the vocal masterpiece, let alone the entire song. Micheal was truly in his own caliber and lane from the jump!

I Think its very important for us to remember that he was a Gifted 5 year old that was raised around all that otherworldly talent at Motown... in addition to being a younger brother to some very musically gifted older siblings. He spent his impressionable years in that era. On top of all of that, Quincy Jones(a certified musical genius) produced and coached him. How could he not be Great beyond infinty?!

It was better recorded than most of what passes for what some think is good sound today. Bruce Swedien is a master engineer, and the production from Quincy Jones was exceptional.

@@jacquesfinster5034 he definitely did. His role can’t be overstated on this whole album. You can hear a synthesis of Q, MJ, Bruce, and Rod. But it’s also a prime example of MJ’s creativity and passion. There are things on this song that he takes with him all the way to History and Invincible and those are part of his signature. It’s amazing to see.

Also, the haunted sound of that Off The Wall intro with that theremin you talk about. That was the start of Michael becoming the King of Halloween. Rod Temperton made both the songs Off The Wall & Thriller so whatever horror vibes he was feeling were delivered expertly by Michael & the studio band. I can NEVER get enough of those odd chord changes & eerie sound with Michael's creepy laughs. This song is BEST when played at night. ALWAYS. LOVE it!

Chris' musical tastes are sublime! You are going through one of my ALL TIME favorite songs. A song that I THOUGHT I knew humming it by ear. But it's more complex than I thought when you go through it track by track. I have to redo my homemade workup of the song notes now. You still miss a lot even playing by ear. The vocal harmonies by Michael on Off The Wall are some of my all time favorites. I love trying to sing along to each line & find out how different they are from each other. Especially the lowest line. And the sheer joy in Michael's voice here. You FEEL the sentiment of being free & off the wall from him in this song. Before Michael's life got so complicated, he was able to sing songs like with this kind of abandon & joy. That's why so many people like the Off The Wall album over his others even though they're all good. Every now & then I just get an inkling to start singing out loud: ♫ *SOOO TONIIIIGHT, GOTTA LEAVE THAT NINE TO FIIIVE UP ON THE SHE~ELF!* ♫ ♫ *And Just Enjoooy Yourseeeeelf. GRooOOVE!* ♫

29:47 why do i like this part so much? beautiful run into this fun play with "9 to 5 upon the shelf..", he sounds like he could just starting making up a new song right there...that "9 to 5 upon the shelf" playfulness sounds like the song could turn into something off of Broadway.. was he recording for the Wizz at that time too? ... Oh, what a treat is to listen to this man making music. there is so much groove in all of what he does, his voice, his relationship to instruments, how he plays with words, rhtyhm.. such groove.. just "Nasty" in the most glorious way possible..

Michael was a musical genius, surrounded by Quincy and Rod forged an unbelievable powerhouse team that could layer upon layer sounds and melodies that would gel beautifully to create magic. All those nuances that in isolation sound odd when mixed in with the other elements just make so much sense. This and Rock With You are my two favourite pop/rock recordings as they are just exemplifying geniuses at the top of their game. Wonderful.

You like this man more even to listen to him without music, his own voice, the way he uses it already gives even the melody. I know there are many good voices, Like Freddy Mercury, and others. But I've never really heard such an incredible voice, it's not just the tones he uses, it's that he plays with it as he wants, it's something wonderful, and he always seems to give his life when he sings and that transmits it and all that is why we love Michael Jackson. Thanks for the video. Let's see if you can play any from the Invincible album. King of Music

Great video as always Chris. I really love your insights and opinions on Michaels voice. A lot of people totally disregard or overlook the fact he was an absolute masterclass singer not only performer. I think that’s why most people who truly enjoy his voice are singers themselves lol. You have covered a lot of his voice now from different eras except in or around the invincible album period. I think it would be interesting to see what your opinions are on an older and more experimental Michael. Of all the songs on that album “2000 Watts” is the one that stand’s out the most to me. Most people I play it for don’t even realise it is Michael Jackson since the vocal sits so low. I think when isolated that could make a phenomenal analysis video and give you a new look on the King of Pops range. Much love from Ireland 🇮🇪
