tbh I think it's harder to start out fast than to finish fast. I always get super nervous and I need to learn how to use that to my advantage to get a good start. I absolutely HATE when people talk about the 400 like it's easy, makes me want to smack them a few times.

Well you have to consider when starting a 400m that it's so fucking essential to start out fast, cause you can never end faster than you can start out. After 8 seconds lactic acid will build up in your muscles and force you to go slower, so to take advantage of the first 8 seconds you need to start out really fast to help give your muscles less of a strain to work up to that speed after they are being fatigued and to give you more momentum to work with on the back stretch into the final 200.

Go fast for the first five steps then coast off. Once you get the 150 meter accelerate and pray.

Just a great vid. How humble is Iwan Thomas? Hope everyone watching realizes what a tremendous runner he was, and yet there's not a shade of any kind of arrogance or jealousy. Just class.

For me I get out of the blocks real quick, then cruise and sprint the straight, then cruise and full out sprint the last straight. I have ran it for 3 years now. Freshman year I was unathletic and ran a 70. Sophomore year got 58, and now I'm at a 54 aiming for 51 next year, and I like my method

First make sure you’re a really good shape. If you can try to run at least a mile a day. After that work on your speed 100m 200m and your foot speed. The faster you are in general the easier you can run the 400

Michael Johnson and Bolt are my frikken heros. But my 400 strategy is first 100 you go 80 or 85%. Then maintain until 180 meters and THEN(!) you have to pull of the gas a little bit. That usually puts me in the lead so i can save for a vicious last 100. But you slow down to 65 or 70% until 280-285 meters. Then gradually pick it up to 90% by 325 or so so you can sprint like hell if someone tries to catch you.

5k to 1600 is not necessarily an easy swing. The benefit of having any distance background, CC races, is that you son already has some idea of pace. In the 1600 pace is vital to a young athlete. If he can learn how to run even splits for the 4 lap race, he can then work on making each of those laps stronger and faster. Coachterrywood@gmail.com if you have more questions. Please ask!
