Give Carl credit for when he was in his prime.wether sprints or long jump, the man was Carl lewis.I always love johnson, they made fun of his style but he proved everybody wrong.Let's face it ,in track you have a limited timecard was an exception. Both are hero's in my eyes,I am 86 and followed both in my life. Both are a credit to track and field

To be fair to Carl, MJ began his world class dominance in 1990, where Carl has been competing at an international level since 1979-80.

I was at this race and it wasn’t that much of a surprise. I’ll be in the stands for this year’s Pre Classic in the new venue and I can’t wait. I volunteered for one of the USATF championships (non Olympic year) in 85 or 86 and was on the infield sitting down (folks in the infield are asked to sit at the start of a race) when he popped a huge long jump. Seeing it from that perspective was truly special. One doesn’t realize from the stands or on tv how high they jump to jump as far as they do. Truly great experience.

Lewis actually ran a very impressive race, considering his age and his injury struggles of 1995. He was "only" 0.32 seconds slower than Johnson. To put that into perspective. Losing to Jonson by 0.32 seconds would have won him silver at the world chanpionchips a few months later. Interestingly this race does not show up on the official IAAF homepage.

What are they seeing?! Carl didn’t close anything coming home and he knows it. Maybe a meter but Mike’s strength kicked in. Mike’s turnover was just too fast and the fact that he was a 400m runner put the icing on the cake. Just too strong.

@@Vinnicombe1 that is NOT a guarantee brother. Age is only a factor when you let it be. MJ was 28 when he set the former 200m wr 19.32 and 32yrs when he set the former 400m wr 43.18. Those are your peak years of sprinting. He was still beating athletes way younger. Like Ato. Kim Collins was in his 40s still running sub 10 in the 100m. MJ just had Carl’s number at this time.

By then, Carl had ran the 200 for a while. Its funny how Mike never made it out of district in HS and ended up one of the greatest long sprinters in history. The last 200M Carl ran was in lane one where he came in last and Michael Johnson won. Its amazing to me how fast things change. Ten years before and ten years after for both is a world of difference. We only have these guys for a second in the scheme of things and they seem to barely touch on each other.

Gotta say how amazing it’s been to see Justin Gatlin stay world class at his age....sports science has come a long way for longevity but Carl was the man. Regardless of win/loss he looked like a thoroughbred racehorse compared to all others in the history of sprinting. They all rock and roll and jerk even Bolt did but Carl was something to watch run. And yes there were times I didn’t care for things he said but beautiful sprinter. Also gotta say 20.4 at 33 not too shabby. I think he lost a little straddling the lane line. I’m a big Johnson fan too but remember the fake hamstring in that million dollar televised 150 meter race? Took me a while to get past Mike doing that. Hey everybody needs forgiveness at times 😁

was just bout to say that. his attitude was horrid so immature. 96 he couldnt handle lewis taking his thunder when he won the long jump. in response to the attentention lewis got and the amazing extended applause he said after on australian tv that it was time for lewis to step down form the top podium because it was his turn to be up there. ( i cant remember the exact words but if you heard it you couldnt believe how childish it sounded. Lewis was questioned afterwards about MJs response he clearly had to hold back his shock and laughter to what mj said. and went onto say he was even sure how this worked and that there was plenty of room for great athletes including MJ to be on the top podium and he went on to list others that were all highly asteemed at the time. then came mj shooting off his mouth at baily...and we all know how that ended. then greene ...mj just always seemed so childish. I wanted to like him but couldnt handle his attitude towards others.

That was the 2nd championships I ever recorded on VHS but someone in my family taped over it so I don't have it anymore. I remember the Mens 100 was a dead heat between Mike Marsh, Dennis Mitchell and Maurice Greene. Michael Johnson's great sub-44 400m run and his sub-20 200m run. Also the 200m semi's were pretty fast thanks to high tailwind. Kevin Little ran a 19.8/19.9 semi which was my 1st introduction to him, which made me a fan hoping he would get a medal at the 95 WC's.

Id like to see texas relays?? 1996 0r 97? Lewis retiring season anyway. Big showdown with bailey who had started at the olympics carl was a chicken and scared to race him in the olympic 4x100 knowing bailey would beat him. (lewis was hitting 43kph plus on nearly every long jump attempt so his top speed was still there) fast forward to the texas relay?? lewis got the final batton from the santamonica boys 1/2 a metre up on bailey and did his classic hand switch and by half way down the straight had put another 2 metres on bailey... when the finish line approached 10 or 15 out bailey realising he wasnt gaining at all suddenly grabbed his hamstring and pulled up in the interview he looked so embarressed and wasnt even hobling went on about cramp because he hates water. and said if he didnt cramp he would have beaten lewis by 10 metres! (yeah ok donnaven) after lewis was asked to respond he said "I dont know all about that but one thing is for sure I may not be able to come up out the blocks any more but I can still run a relay." Ive got the track 7 feild article still and the photos but not the footage... hope someone has it. but pretty sure it was texas either not long after the olympics or it was the start lewis retirement season tour before he let his fittness go. @@Dynamics416

" I am so angry. I have been tested so much this past 6 months ...more than even the ENTIRE jam' team put together!!! Ive been tested 3 times." this came right off the bat that jam had only tested 2 of their athletes in 6 months and they werent famous ones either. this was during the reign of bolt. it was also reported they tested for one yr zero athletes altho I dont know if that one was just hear say.

maybe dig a little deeper than the news articals the stuff he tested for was in laymens terms on the unsure list and to low to be considered positive hence the need to simply give a reason for inadvertant use. thats the rules nothing was changed or dodged as Nexum falsly claimed. as it turns out modern tests on the stims ...not a steroid drug as peeps acuse him of have shown over and over now that the stims he tested positve for give no unfair advantage and thus were deleted even from the unsure banned list. sorry for the rant but I know first hand former elite drug athletes from quite a few countries (none busted, I just know them and Ill leave it at that) but I get tired peeps just going with the media or the popular view when its wrong . even MJ had a dark shadow over him but most dont know that.
