I watched MJ's whole career from college forward. When Jordan and the Bulls played, every bar, every restaurant and practically every home in all 50 states were watching. Even people who knew nothing about basketball. Yup Grandmamas, little kids, and people from all nations around the globe! The world came to a halt when Jordan and the Bulls were doing their thing, LITERALLY! When did that ever happen for Lebron? Jordan WAS MUST SEE TV!!

Jordan was built completely different. His determination, athleticism, work ethic, and skill was pretty much unmatched. His desire to win at everything he did was outstanding. I'm so glad I got the chance to watch him play a few live games. Watching him play live in stadium was an experience ill never forget.

After his first retirement his body changed. Yes he lost some athleticism but he got smarter and fine tuned his skills in spacing, positioning and footwork to be just as effective on the court. Still leading the league in scoring, still making first team all defenses, still winning MVP's all while winning 72 games and Championships with a whole new style of play. And to me, that's more impressive rather than relying simply on his athleticism to still dominate. 💪🏾

Imo Jordan's aerial abilities are the most jaw dropping part of his game. Never seen hang time like that, never seen in air ball control like that, never seen someone look as athletic and natural while off the ground. You already mentioned his mid air IQ. Also, the strength (and coordination) it would take to absorb so much mid air heavy contact and still dunk or hit shots on the way down is astounding.... I love watching great jumpers block shots, when MJ launched himself straight up to swat a ball out of the sky, it was a thing of beauty.

I have never seen a player to this day change his shot in hang time mid air like MJ had the ability to do, it was insane !. He also had killer instinct for the game, if you watch any Bills full games he stepped up on key moments of the game to dominate with a great defensive play or a clutch shot, he had the same killer instinct and basketball IQ as Larry Bird.

He had that baseball body in his 95 return after 1.75 years away. He got back to an elite athlete for a 32/33 year old in 96 IMO. I think he was still elite athlete for all his 30's relative to the rest of the league in history. Look at VC in his 30s, Kobe in his 30s, Bron, etc.

Look for a video of Jordan's last three season's with the Bulls that's focused entirely on his mid-range game and footwork. It is mind blowing. As his athleticism began to decline in his mid-30s, he reinvented his game to remain completely unguardable and stand alone as still clearly the best player in the world. His technical mastery, efficiency of motion and understanding of the game were out of this world.

In fact, those of us who were old enough to have witnessed his career from the beginning, began to notice the decline during the '93 season. But as you stated, he was just SO FAR AHEAD of the crowd, that it really didn't even matter. Because during his comeback season ('95) and those 2nd 3-peat seasons, he'd TOTALLY refined his game to the point, where he became a precise, methodical, tactician, who didn't need his past, surreal athleticism to obliterate defenders/defenses. And as you so astutely pointed out, there was no wasted movement. And with aid of the Triangle Offense, it allowed him to carve up defenses with geometric precision. NOTE: 2nd 3-peat MJ is who Kobe (RIP) modeled his game after. Because he knew he could NEVER duplicate prime MJ, due to him never having that kinda' freakish athleticism.

Jordan was smooth, footwork on a 100. Maybe Hakeem was a hair better with footwork but not by much. Jordan was all around just great. His dunks are obviously great but what about that lay package, finshing on 100, and with either hand. Mid range on 101 (if thats possible), post game on 100, ball fakes on 100, mid air adjustments on a level no one is close too. Best passing lane defender ever, Hof level help defense, and a very good iso defender as well. Combine that with a 4.3 forty, a 48 inch vert, and those huge ass mitts and well you got Michael Jeffery Jordan.

the 80's was the tallest era in NBA history...but Jordan will make you forget he is 6'4.75" barefoot, he played so much bigger. Jordan usually wouldn't use the dribble to fake you out, he would use his body language. That's why it appears he uses less movement, and wastes nothing...not prone to try and dance on you. He will take it into you and get you to bite one way or the other. Players today don't use the triple threat position like that anymore. They will start the dribble immediately and dance with it.

Great observations, never noticed that... One thing i've noticed is Jordan's method of using double teams to his advantage, especially in the post. He would time his move just as the double was getting there, using their momentum against them, either spinning away from the 2nd defender or between them if they left too much space while approaching, and beating 2 guys instead of 1. He didn't need to pass out of a double team to make them pay.

MJ and Kobe were out one night and instead of having a good time, they argued the whole night about who would win 1v1 with both in their prime. MJ: "I would hit you with this move" Kobe: "I'd defend that move like this" MJ: "Then I'd counter with this move" Kobe: "I'd be expecting that counter move" ... It went on and on all night, down to the tiniest detail, until they BOTH agreed, ...Jordan would win because he had bigger hands. That's the level of perfectionist both of them were.

Jordan in the 80s and 90s. Early 2000s was an nba defensive player's worst nightmare. He was dunking on multi defensive players. He was no joke. Nba back then, you got punishment, and you dished out punishment. There wasn't this foul acting. Or whining to a referee. The nba now is a powder puff version. Players act like their getting murdered if a defensive player so much as touch them. Fans now don't understand what the nba was really like back then. Today, to many premadonna players are out for months with superficial injuries or even maded up ones. This is why I don't watch nba now. It's become to tamed or the fun watching it is gone.😔

Jordan only lost a step or athleticism that half year when he came back. That off season, while he was shooting Space Jam, Warners Brothers built the Jordan Dome on the lot where he scrimmaged and worked out with current NBA players and when he came back that next season his explosiveness was back. He also came back as a master of the mid range game and like other people said, his IQ was higher than everyone else.

I agree when you say he lost a step after his first retirement. In fact I felt he lost a step after the 1992 Olympics, but it was more apparent after his return from retirement. But what he lost in athleticism he gained in IQ. 96-98 Jordan was using all of his fundamentals and IQ to the point where his game was probably more polished than ever. Reminds me of how Floyd Mayweather adjusted his style as he aged. The mark of an elite athlete is to make the correct adjustments when needed and still dominate. If I were to pick a prime MJ? Probably 1990/1991 season where he had the perfect balance of his 80s athleticism and 90s IQ

He never lost a step, the whole time he wore 45, he was out of BB shape. He came back in March of 95, and he never got into BB shape until the off season, into 1996 when he led them to 72 wins. In 1998 his last bulls year he did lose a step as a 35 year old.
