@mattg6390 Жыл бұрын
The except be 6’9 part is pretty crucial though. He can’t rebound the way that Magic could. That’s significant. I’m not even saying Magic is better, I’m just tired of the recency bias that so many NBA fans have. I think that it’s only because Curry is still playing that so many people think of him as being better than Magic. Same thing as the MJ vs Lebron GOAT “debate”. I put debate in quotes because I think MJ is easily the GOAT and it shouldn’t be up for discussion. 6-0 in the Finals. 6 Finals MVPS. 5 regular season MVPS. Defensive player of the year. College title. Seemingly hit every clutch shot in the playoffs. Won the title each of his final six FULL seasons with the Bulls and did it all in 13 NBA seasons. Spent significantly less time in the league and still has way better/more impressive accolades than Lebron (especially in the playoffs).
@GP.025 Жыл бұрын
@@mattg6390 yea but since when was rebounding a point guard skill. Magic the better player in my opinion but stephs the better point. @Luca-yb4sh Жыл бұрын
@@mattg6390 I find kind of hilarious that you are "tired of the recency bias" towards active players but have nothing to say about retired players being put on an untouchable pedestal as soon as they step off the court. Now, don't get me wrong, I have Magic in my top 3 all time and Steph at 7 or 8, depending on the day. However, to say that is "blasphemy" to put Curry in the same category as Magic, as Mad Dog is doing here, shows exactly that kind of attitude: past legends can never be surpassed because people like him (and there's a lot) reject the very idea to begin with. The bar for active players to be considered on the same level as past superstars gets higher and higher for no reason. Curry actually provides a great example of this. You have no idea how many comments I've seen arguing that if Curry wins one or two more chips then maybe he's top 10, when there's no other superstar with 4 rings that is not considered a top 10 player of all time. Or how many people say stuff like "Magic will always be the goat PG no matter what". You talk of recency bias but in reality active players always get the short end of the stick and are required to prove themselves doing double the work past players did. And quite frankly I'm tired of that attitude.

Oh, the other thing Steph is actually weak (but has gotten much better recently) is defense. Not even top 20 among guards
@GP.025 Жыл бұрын
@@nealcassady-yn3bh They’re speaking on most skilled point guard tho. Magic stats are heavily influenced by his size and athleticism which are not Pg skills. Who has the better handle, the better off hand, the better pass left and right, the best full court handle. Who makes the game EASIEST for his teammates. Westbrook averages 8.3 assist for his career, curry 6.5. Do you think Westbrook is a better passer.? When kd was in golden state steph could’ve milked the ball in pick and roll and racked up assist after assist in a Mike Dantoni type offense. But no like a true point guard steph plays the game a way that benefits his teammates and winning first. In the pick and roll steph is too dangerous, he’s instantly doubled for the past 10 years. Setting up 4-3 situations, setting up easy hockey assist for teammates. I done watch guys like harden in his prime get doubled at half court, and throw weak passes because he doesn’t care if he’s not getting the assist. Steph puts it on the money everytime in that situation over 7 footers or who ever with the hook pass left or right creating the 4-3. His game is all about pressuring the Defense, to make the game EASIEST for his teammates, Which is the primary job of a PG. Steph is a different type point guard but he is still a point guard at heart, maxed out in all the point fundamentals. He has no weakness in a point guard trait, but ohh his stats, bro is one of the most sacrificial players to ever play at the expense of winning and playing for his teammates. He is bending the defense off the ball and creating wide open lays for teammates while coming off flare screens. Ain’t that what point guards do, curry does that without touching the ball. His biggest weakness probably is getting 1 on 1 buckets like shooting guards such as D Wade, Jordan, booker, Dame etc. His 3 point shot is used to pressure the defense to break and create openings for his teammates. His 3 shot is used to influence the game as a point guard should, make the game EASIER for his teammates. The celebration makes the defense bend and break even more. Steph curry is a point GOD at heart and is always a step ahead of the defense like a great point guard should be

The NBA is officiated different now compared to when Magic played. So comparing players of different times is hard. There was no restricted zone under the rim when Magic played. Hand checking was allowed and you could restrict the man cutting across the lane without the ball. There also were no flagrant fouls, so fouls to stop a layup could be pretty physical. Also, the step back we see now would have been a travel, and people today get away with palming or a carry that would have been a violation in the past.

So much of what Johnson does is trackable by stats. His rebounding, his passing (assists), his scoring. He was incredible, and the stats back that up. So much of what Curry does is not trackable by stats, though. As Stephen A. said, just his presence on the floor is enough to create more space for his teammates to do better. He's a black hole. We've never seen a player defended like how most teams defend Curry, and that more than anything else has led to Golden State's success. I'm not ready to definitively choose between them. @@Mustard4488 You're right, sure, but I don't think that's a helpful way of looking at it. Magic adhere's to the old way of playing PG, and he does it better than anybody. But the game has evolved, and pure PGs are a relic of the past. In the modern NBA, Curry's skillset translates into winning more than Magic's skillset would. It's telling that Curry found all his success in the Lebron era, while Magic essentially couldn't win again once MJ got a bit of help. Either way, this debate isn't easy. Anybody saying that one is head and shoulders above the other is wrong. It's very close. Even MJ, who chose Magic, said Steph is close.

Stephen A's explanation makes a lot of sense to be honest. Michael said it himself - you have to first define what a point guard is, or what exactly we're talking about in order to have a serious debate. Magic Johnson is the very definition of a point guard, if we're leaning on the historical definition. But Steph is something new, something else entirely, so there's no way to really compare the two according to the historical definition of a point guard. The only way to make a comparison would be to look at their overall impact on their teams' offenses and winning overall, and if you are doing that then Steph Curry vs Magic Johnson is an actual debate and could go either way depending on what a person values more.

Magic won FMVP because he played dual role in g6. A point guard n a center at the same time. Imagine a rookie with such confidence shooting a “skyhook” to win the game n eventually the championship. That was his way of saying “thank you Kareem it’s all because of you!” He gave KAJ his flowers on a live game.... Magic best PG all time!

tbh Steph is actually a shooting guard in a PG position. The funny thing is that Draymond is the one that moves the ball around the most on the team and mostly does the facilitating for the past few years as a Power Forward surprisingly. Steph used to facilitate more pre-2015 by racking up more assists.

No, he is a point guard. Draymond makes reads of Curry breaking the defense down either on or off the ball. When guys like Nate Archibald or Oscar Robertson or even a Jerry West played like Curry, they were listed at Point, especially the first two. There is more than one way to play a position and impact wise, Steph Curry beats Magic Johnson. He also has a better peak and is the better defender(quiet as kept). Steph has also had less help compared to Magic. Magic has just been seen as the best PG of all time that now that there is a threat, people don't want to believe it, so they have to make up a definition of what a point guard is which just so fits Magic Johnson.
@sup9542 Жыл бұрын
Draymond doesn’t do that anymore. He doesn’t seem to have energy to do anything but defend now. Poole was the one with more PG responsibilities. Now it’ll be CP3. Steph only plays true PG for half the game.
@theinktician Жыл бұрын
Draymond receives the ball at the top of the key after setting a screen and rolling to the basket and gives the extra pass from there. This is not a point guards role, as much as people want to say it is. He is not the one moving the ball the most. He is just the man that ends up with it after the screen in a 2 on 1 situation

If Curry plays with a true PG like Zeke, Magic, AI etc he automatically has to become a SG (shooting guard) which imo is his true position if he played back in those days, even in the 2000s. Curry is a SG with point guard abilities which at this point everyone in the NBA from Centers to forwards, well the top guys mostly, have point guard abilities. And thank MJ for mentioning Zeke which pisses me off when noone mentions him as one of the top point guards of all time.

Grew up in L.A. during the 80's watching Magic, I agree with him as #1 PG. Steph has averaged 25-32 pts a game the past 7 years. Like MJ said, from a definition standpoint, I categorized Steph functionally as a scorer-shooter, not a true playmaking PG. A close second to Magic in my opinion only, is John Stockton. His assist-steals records, both hallmarks of a true point guard, will never remotely be broken. Lastly, you'll be farfetched to find a playmaking point guard like him who averaged anywhere near the 51% FG shooting % for his career.

I think the context of the question is "who is the best at fulfilling the traditional role of point guard?". That would of course be Magic. The only way Curry gets in this conversation is if we view as "who is the best player who filled in the point guard role" being that today's NBA is more positionless. Scoring would take more of a factor here in my opinion.
@513ovaeverything7 Жыл бұрын
I here where u r coming from. But people do not realize the playmaking of Steph curry just running off screens as much as he does. Because of how dangerous he is running off and shooting off screens he creates so many open lay ups shots for his teammates even if he is not the individual passing the ball to the teammates. He is literally the one creating them open shots.
@miketrillo8067 Жыл бұрын
@@Dominoparis21Well, we can take your "positionless" comment, and create a hypothetical hybrid PG/SG position, coz by doing so, then Steph suddenly is at the top conversation. That's the only "new" positional label that we can put him in, coz he ain't no Magic, but he ain't no MJ/Kobe either.
