People forget the Yankees were willing to pay Yamamaoto for 325 million last year and still try to keep Soto.
@reddog35444 күн бұрын
Yankees would be foolish to stay in the bidding for ONE player. Let other teams do the Soto dance. Get the players NEEDED. Jason Dominguez might just do a great job batting next to judge if given a chance.

That one player is the best left handed hitter I’ve seen since Barry bonds. Juan Soto played 4 or 5 years by time he was Dominguez age. It’s not even close

Dave Winfield . Was the best player on the Yankees in 1982 . W the biggest contract . The Yankees forgot they had no pitching ni defense . That’s not how you build a dynasty. Get a guy who hits 300 hits 20 hr. And tighten up pitching 3 rd base and 1st base. Spending 600 mill at least get all around improvements
@gregthegroove4 күн бұрын
Here’s the thing guys. Mets, Yankees, Dodgers. Whichever of these teams decides to pay Juan all this money will be as a “special bonus” type budget on the side of their regular payroll. It is what it is. He’s that good. If you’re that rich, that’s how you look at it. You have one chance and Don is right. Pick what you think he’s worth and just do it. Cohen will treat this as a special circumstance and he’ll go out and sign Alonso also without batting an eye because he views Soto aside from the Mets payroll if that makes sense.
@damonvalentino47234 күн бұрын
Agree with you on that one. If you decide to go in on Soto, you have to exclude him from your budget, or in this case lackthereof

Personally, I'd love to see Juan Soto back, but I agree that spreading that money around and getting 2 or 3 players for the same price will probably have more of an impact. If they pass on Soto, go out and get Christian Walker, Alex Bregman, Sasaki, and Corbin Burnes, that will probably have a bigger impact on the team than signing a single player. They could probably sign all those guys for 4 or 5 years for roughly the same money they are considering paying Soto and thet won't have an albatross of a contract to deal with during Sotos later playing years. These contracts are never worth it in the long run. I'd pay him 50 a year for 7 take it or leave it.

Yankees were a .500 team without Soto and wouldn’t have made the playoffs this year without him

@@Platerpus7 2023 was an aberration....I don't think for a second they are a .500 team without Soto. They were ravaged by inuries in 2023. We will see what happens, but I can see the Yanks winning 100 games next year without Soto if they spend their money wisely.

Carlos Baerga is not a journalist. Preliminary meetings with free agents almost never discuss money. That comes at later meetings (which Soto and Boras will conduct in December.)

You know where the idea that the Yankees don't let stars walk comes from? Because they're basically never in the situation where a star could leave. That requires developing a star player, and they barely ever do.
@Platerpus74 күн бұрын
That idea has been around way longer than you. That’s not a new idea. They used to develop stars and they did not let them go. Cano is really the only star they ever let walk. Prior to 2000 they developed stars. Convenient to take recent history and try and make it entire history
@BKDBut4 күн бұрын
@Platerpus7 name the stars they were developing and not letting go? Jeter. Rivera. Mattingly. Please name the others from 40 years ago while the only developed star you can name in the last decade+ is Judge. I can name far more busts that you guys said were sure stars for years

This reminds me of the first LeBron free agency. He just wanted tons of attention and to be wined and dined. He always knew where he was going: Miami. By all reports Soto hasn't even talked money yet, they give him tons of attention and wine & dine him, but no terms discussed. I'm wondering now whether this isn't all for attention, and Soto knows all along where he's going to sign.
@ShortstopJEsq4 күн бұрын
Honestly. I don't even want Soto anymore. He'll break the bank and will hinder us from shoring up our other spots, like 2nd/3rd base (Bergman/Arenado/etc) and 1st base (Walker). Plus if he gets injured or doesn't deliver, that's a shit-ton of money down the drain. Why have a Stanton/LeMahieu repeat?? Yes Soto is great and generational, but he isn't going to bring extra revenue to the Yankees the way an Ohtani or Matsui did. He's not exposing us to an extra market and honestly isn't even a franchise-type of player the way Judge is. Let Soto walk and don't get involved in the Boras games.
@MikeD_4 күн бұрын
Kay's wrong. Baerga has been wrong in the past. This is simply Boras leaking info, some of it disinformation, to get the best offers. My prediction six months back was Soto will get 14/700 for a 50MM AAV. He gets the 14-year contract he left with the Nats, he breaks the MLB AAV record, he's the first player at $50MM, and he matches Ohtani's $700MM, which actually exceeding it since none of its deferred. If Soto wants to be a Yankee, Boras will come back and give the Yankees the final shot.

@Platerpus74 күн бұрын
Yankees absolutely can afford Soto. What nonsense is that. They are actually are the only team who can pay Soto with the teams profits and not actually have to go into the owners pockets. There is not another team in the league who can say that. Every owner would have to pay out of their pocket for him. The Steinbrenners don’t even need to do that. Mets didn’t even profit 50 million this year. You know how much the Yankees profited? Around 600-700 million. They almost can pay Soto’s contract in full with 1 years profits. What a load of bullshit saying they can’t afford it. There is not a single owner in baseball who can’t afford it. These are multi billionaires. But like I said, Yankees are the only team with the advantage of not having to go into their owners wallet.
