Michael's sound is mainly in the fingers and his approach. His few effects only confirm and finish the meal he's serving. He is an extraordinary skilled musician with great taste for tone, chords and melody. He knows when to tear down the house and.......most important, when to step back. And such a humble person.... 😍

_"Michael's sound is mainly in the fingers and his approach. His few effects only confirm and finish the meal he's serving."_ Spot on! Same as with all great guitar players. With lesser players effects boxes and pedals are only a crutch.

@@electrix6751 I like playing clean as well. But I'm also not afraid to use my extra gear. Sometimes a song/style requires a certain pedal, effect. Like a volume pedal. Can't do without. Don't like the knob technique. And a looper comes in handy as well.

thanks very much for that! Very interesting indeed ... so many tones from such a simple board.. but of course, it's all in the hands and the heart! All the best from Down Under 🇦🇺

I don’t think he needs any pedals … the feel is all there …and he’s got it .love his playing .

everything is on point from the tip of the fingers to the sound from the speakers. This guy himself is a reference to gear setup. I like Scott Henderson for guitar setup and Josh Smith for knob adjustment on amp and gear, pretty much simple and straight forward that's why I love him!

Michael is my Top 5 guitarist! As Lukather (My favorite!) was the go to guy in the 70s & 80s for sessions, he and Dann Huff (Also in my Top 5!) were the go to guys in the 80s & 90s! Love his sound! More the Luke sound though! Although he rips on Tales from the Bulge and other albums, his work with The Heights and Jamie Walters is some of my favorite! His interaction with the sax on "How Do You Talk to and Angel" is PERFECT and the dreamy liquid guitar solo here kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmecq5Kjm8yjpbc

I've never heard of Dan Huff (thanks for the tip-off!) So i wonder; what is your top 5 (or even top 10 for that matter) of best session players? I'm curious because i love Lukathers playing as well!

@@versnellingspookie Well, Lukather session work was primarily 70’s 80’s, Huff 80’s 90’s and Landau 80’s 90’s. Of, course, they all still session! Lukather was once asked how many albums have you sessioned on? He replied, “I stopped counting after 500!” That being said other guitarist known primarily for their studio work that I would recommend (in no particular order) are Dean Parks (Koinonia, Lots Soundtracks & Artists including Elton John, America, Billy Joel, Took over as Guitarist for Bread), Danny Kortchmar (The Section, Linda Ronstadt, Jackson Browne), Michael Thompson (Animal Logic, MTB), Jay Graydon (The Jackson Five, Alice Cooper, Solo on “Peg” Steely Dan), Bruce Gaitsch (Lots Artists Especially Richard Marx, Spanish Guitar on Madonna “La Isla Bonita”, Multiple albums from solo Members of Chicago), Paul Jackson Jr. (Tons R&B Artists) Grant Geissman (Lots TV Shows including Monk Theme, Solo on Chuck Mangione’s “Feels So Good”!) and Larry Carlton (The Crusaders, Fourplay, Lots Artists including Steely Dan, Steve Lukather). Anyway, that’s off the top of my head! Probably forgot some, but that should be more than enough to get you and others started on checking them out! ENJOY! P.S. If you love Lukather's sound you Must also checkout The Erik Torjesen Group and Tommy Denander work!

@@gremmiehodad thank you very much for the reply! I've got some (quite enjoyable) homework to do. Chuck Mangione and Bread are amazing artists / bands, i'm stoked to learn about the people behind the sound!

@@DutchGuitarDude Michael Thompson is great! One of my favorite artists is Ryley Walker, and he got to open up for Richard Thompson a while back! On his Twitter he told some anecdotes that Richard told him. Either way, happy jamming!
