I already had a Michael May Ettrick, but with a peach pruner blade, now I have a traditional Ettrick with a Wharncliffe blade in Stag covers.

On my recent acquisition from MM, the edge grind leaves a lot to be desired,, (belt finished), but if it came perfectly straight, and sharp, it would obviously cost a lot more, !! Anyway, I love sharpening, (very therapeutic😊), so the lambfoot blade is like a straight razor now. ☺️👍, 🔪 If I were to get another MM knife, it would almost certainly be an Ettrick,, thanks for showing us these ones.. 👍👍

The blah blah is very interesting info and background (family) insight which adds to the character of all these knives. Thanks for showing all the differences between makers. Another great video on these island's makers and their knives.

The Ettrick is one of the most interesting patterns I've seen. Thanks much for bringing it to my attention. I think you're correct about the Stag. Some folks will increase the angle to make a smoother transition into the bolster but then you have less visible character in the natural material. It's a toss up. How much of the bark do you want to remove to make a smooth transition? At the end of the day, for me, if there is no gap between the cover material and bolster, the maker has done his job correctly. With stag cover as pretty as that one is, I'm totally okay with the steep angle of the grind! Please keep up with the blah, blah, blah. Unlike many other channels, your blah, blah, blah has plenty of knives and knife industry. Thank you for supporting small knife makers. The best thing about a person reviewing a knife they actually bought is you can expect an honest critical analysis as they invested money in. If they knife is a freebie, there is going to be bias in the review. It might be unintentional bias, but it will be there

I’ve made a point of not taking freebies. It pressurises you to give glowing reviews of the mediocre.

I like the Ettrick knife pattern because the longer handle and shorter blade. The handle being longer gives you more control than a short one. Using brass bolsters and caps does give the knife a different look; but brass seems to lose its shine much faster than nickel silver. The A. Wright & Son Stag model with Stag covers is a bargain. Stag cover knives usually cost more than most others.🙂

If all knives were brass, a nickel silver one would be amazing, but when most are nickel silver, a brass one is special. Polishes up easily, or patinas well. The Ettrick is a very British pattern in so many ways.

A great review of a very nice knife Eric. I only have one of Michael's knives so far and have no complaints about it at all.

That is a great collection of knives. I really like stag and I think they all look good. Also, I don’t mind when stag covers don’t smoothly transition to the bolster, I feel like stag should be chunky like that. All other materials should have a smooth transition.

The brainwave of a local worthy or a shepherd asking the local blacksmith to put a longer handle on his 'gutty'. And anything in-between. I can't help thinking the answer is out there. I wonder if new models made the press in Sheffield and its story is sitting there in an archive.

@@slick_slicers Ah, I just got mine fixed, as it had snapped. Kinda sad. But Michael made it all nice again! It's featured in an Otter Messer video I made today. Have you seen the Webermesser? AKA Weaver's knife?
