Hrygth (ruth) is an Old Norse word meaning pity or distress, possibly grief. So in Old and Middle English you could be ruth. Hence if you are ruthless, you are without pity or distress. Ruth is now obsolete but we still use ruthless. You can also be whelmed as it actually means capsize or submerge. The wave may whelm the deck. If they overwhelm the deck you're in trouble.

She didn’t steal it as she isn’t claiming it as her own, she’s simply bringing it up as another example she’s come across that she finds amusing 😂 just sayin.. 😂

That couch is the most comfortable piece of furniture in the whole Universe, no other place do so many celebrities just let their guard down and be themselves for a few minutes and just open up. It's a magical couch, with a magical host.

Looks like someone is back to full health. Looking really good Jodi. Not wanting to favour just one of you, Nick is looking his normal self (take that however you wish). Enjoyed the reaction as usual. Look after yourselves.

I love watching the Graham Norton Show because he allows his guests to talk without interrupting them all the time it's more about them than him. Please do more reactions to Graham, he has the best guests on his show and it is always funny and entertaining

Graham Norton is a most excellent host - puts people at ease, has a laugh with them, coaxes interesting stories out of them without ever making it all about him. There's a couple of Miriam Margolyes compilation clips that are well worth a watch.

Under and over whelmed is a strange one in that whelmed and overwhelmed mean the same (engulfed, submerged or buried). The unnecessary extension has essentially supplanted the original in common usage. A newspaper search suggests this transition began around the beginning of the 19thC.

Sort of how people today say something like that was 'real' good. It adds nothing to say 'real' and is an unnecessary addition.

This topic must have been joked about thousands of times by thousands of people over the centuries. I remember having a variant of this conversation with schoolmates on the bus back in ~1985 - for some reason I particularly remember abstract, inert and unkempt featuring. If only I could remember useful stuff.

Hiya. You're right. The name Ruth means Charm, Caring, Compassion and if you do not have Charm or Compassion and you are not Caring, then you are without Ruth and therefore Ruth-less. Stay safe. All the best to you.

ruth is in the dictionary as a noun meaning compassion for the misery of another, or remorse or grief/distress.
