I thought maybe Michael Myers might be a little more secretive with his stalking, but I think it's safe to say he doesn't care who sees him and man does he love the theatrics! haha
I enjoyed this movie very much and can see why it is considered a classic.

You all need to remember that this movie was made in 1978. A lot of the stuff the bothers you is because you've seen these kinds of movies a million times. You get annoyed that Laurie turns her back on the killer because you've seen a lot of movies where the killer keeps coming after being stabbed. This was the movie that created the slasher sub genre. Audiences weren't used to that at the time. Those tropes weren't tropes yet.

Sometimes I hate watching reactions to these movies from younger people. They make me feel ancient because of things they say. Like if a horror movie was released in the 70s they don't expect it to be good. I'm like some of the best horror movies came from the 70s!

Yeah, but it hasn't aged well, we're watching this film TODAY, not in 1978, don't pretend people to like it when it's not a good movie. It was the first? Yes. It introduced a new horror sub-genre? Absolutely. It can be considered a classic? Of course. But, it's still a good movie? Not if you watch with objectivity, let's be real. The scenes are non-sense (a little kid be able to kill an adult woman and a man would never survive some gunshots in the chest or in the head), the music is repetitive, Michael Myers is a one dimensional villain that is not scary at all, the characters are annoying AF, the actors are awful, the pacing is horrible and that's it. It's a classic, but not a good anymore. Just accept it, you can still like this movie of course, but not every movie age well, and Halloween did not aged well at all. In the 70s there were FAR better horror/thriller movie, like Texas Chainsaw Massacre or The Exorcist, they're far better made and disturbing, I can't understand how Halloween gets more praise when it's a boring and non-sense movie that could be done in 18 days (oh wait..). And one last thing, if you think that people should not watch a movie with today standards, then you try to think if this movie was made today, I can assure you that people would DESTROY it. And I mean, Halloween is not just bad, it's not even scary, AT ALL (don't try to tell me that Michael with a blanket on his entire body and glasses it's scary, it's something I would expect from a comedy movie)

There was also more than one mask made, I saw a behind the scenes photo with two people wearing one each! Also in certain scenes the face of the mask looked different probably for extra impact. Eg : Bob's pinned by the knife death with the tilting head and the laundry scene with Michael seen in the background.

Fun fact with the Dog death. It was the Dog trainer in the jump suit. He lifted the dog, and then dropped him safely on the ground while the camera was in high frame rate. The result looks like Mike is slowly dropping the dog he crushed in his arms to the ground, while playing the clip in a normal frame rate.

Just to help you all feel a little better. This was a low budget film that wasn't expected to get as popular as it did. It's why several mistakes weren't corrected. Because it wasn't thoroughly checked when it was being finalized. -When Laurie sees Myers out the window, he disappears a second later despite her not even looking away. -He drives very close to her car when he's following the them -He stands in plain sight behind the bushes -But most importantly, the scene that got you all freaked out. The "then we rip Lindsey's clothes" was a mistake by the character, due to him being drunk. If they had better writers they could have clarified that scenario. But again, due to the low budget and time restraints, this part of the film wasn't noticed when it was finalized.

I own a copy on DVD and in the special features (some behind the scenes things) there were a few interesting facts. First off... the hand reaching for the knife at the beginning as well as doing the stabbing was Debra Hill's. She had the same kind of costume on and the camera angle made it look smaller. When Michael "smashes" the car window with his hand, if you pause it, you can see he actually has a wrench against his palm and the wrench is what actually fractures the window. Another interesting thing is - they had boxes of leaves which they spread all around to make it look like fall and had to rake and collect them all back after each scene used. :)

The deranged and mentally disturbed can be incredibly strong. My late father ripped the door to his hospital room off the hinges. Six people had to hold him down, and all the while, he was literally growling at them and trying to bite them. They medically and physically restrained him. It was like that until he was late stage Alzheimer's. You really don't know until you've been through it. Before he was committed, I'd stay with him when mom had errands (I worked second shift). He threatened to kill me multiple times. Sometimes, mom slept in the car, doors locked with a pistol. Oh, and one more thing. You guys talk far too much. I sincerely hope you don't do this in the theater.

This landmark movie practically invented the slasher genre although a case can be made for Rene Clair's 1945 "And Then There Were None" based on Agatha Christie's novel. The mask Michael wears is actually a William Shatner "Captain Kirk" mask bought off the rack for a buck! They removed the eyebrows and sideburns, darkened the hair and sprayed the face white. It forever became associated with the Halloween franchise. John Carpenter is a one-man band who writes, directs, edits and scores all his films. His body of work includes a number of pulpy classics and B-movie greats like "Assault on Precinct 13", "Halloween", "Someone's Watching Me!", "The Fog", "Escape From New York", "The Thing", "Christine", "Starman", "They Live!", "Memoirs of an Invisible Man", "Body Bags", "In the Mouth of Madness", "Vampires" and "The Ward". His first film, "Dark Star", was a sci-fi horror-comedy that partially inspired "Alien"! He also wrote the screenplay for "The Eyes of Laura Mars". His scores are instantly recognizable with their throbbing notes and he expertly uses silence and stillness to generate unbearable tension. Jamie Lee Curtis' film debut as horror's first Final Girl made her a Scream Queen icon. John Carpenter would work with her again in "The Fog" and "Halloween II". She is the daughter of Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis. Janet Leigh has a famous horror movie to her credit as well having been Norman Bates' first victim in "Psycho"'s famous shower scene directed by Alfred Hitchcock. Donald Pleasance was a veteran British character actor of some standing known primarily for portraying unpleasant, grubby fellows. Haunted Dr. Loomis was one of his few heroic characters. John Carpenter would work with him again in "Halloween II", "Escape From New York" and "Prince of Darkness". Charles Cyphers, who played Sheriff Brackett, was part of Carpenter's troupe and appeared in seven of his films: "Assault on Precinct 13", "Halloween", "Someone's Watching Me!", "Elvis", "The Fog", "Escape From New York" and "Halloween II". Nancy Loomis, who played Annie Brackett, appeared in three Carpenter films: "Assault on Precinct 13", "Halloween" and "The Fog". Michael seems to be triggered by some suppressed sexual hang-up over his sister that he projects onto other females but he's an indiscriminate killer who was meant to have no motivation. He is simply murder incarnate. In one of the inferior sequels, Pleasance returns to the role of Loomis and has a terrific line about Michael: "I always knew WHAT he was but I never knew WHY." Michael's eye is messed up because Laurie jabbed him with a wire hanger! The sequel, "Halloween II", picks up where the first leaves off and is primarily set in a hospital where Laurie is recovering from her wounds. Curtis, Pleasance and Cyphers return. Rick Rosenthal directs but John Carpenter writes the screenplay. The second entry and "H20", set twenty years later, are the only worthy sequels. What happened with your outro music? It was so loud it masked all your commentary!

Now you gotta check out Halloween II (1981). It continues on the same night, right after this one. Myers whole MO is he enjoys the stalking. He wants his victims to hear, and know someone is watching. This is one of the greatest films of all time. It's in the congressional library's film registry board, It's a list of films deemed "culturally, historically or aesthetically significant" that are recommended for preservation by those holding the best elements for that film, be it motion picture studios, the Library of Congress and other archives, or filmmakers. 775 films on that list, out of millions made. Carpenter wrote Myers to be the actual boogeyman. He said he's a human, but he has a supernatural edge. He was only gonna do this one film, and the ending was supposed to scare people as it implies that you can't kill the boogeyman, with them showing all the places he's been in the movie, and his breathing getting heavier. It suggests that he can be everywhere, and nowhere.

See, I think it wasn't the actor, but the Character, Bob, who mixed up the names. Remember, Linda told him the plan to go to the house where Annie is babysitting a kid named Lindsey. She asked him, "You got it?" He said, Yeah, I got it," then proceeded to botch everything she said. Given the explanation, Bob may not really know Annie or Lindsey. So, he's tipsy and fooling around, and he messes up the names, which makes Linda (also a tad drunk) laugh. That's why it appears to be more a drunken mistake than a joke. Either way, if he'd have said it seriously, Linda's kinda the type to get mad and yell at him. Look how she acted when Bob pulled on her blouse, when he was spinning her around, she thought he didn't get her beer, or wouldn't respond to her. Linda giggles easily, yet still seems to have a low, narrow tolerance for Too Much silliness. Don't forget, this is 1978. Laurie is a First Gen Final Girl. It's because of her, we now know The Rules. Before her, most femmes were like Judith and her friends -- all scream, little fight, no run. And yep, The Boogeyman not only has a (dark, mischievous) sense of humor, he also has a (dark, mischievous) sense of art. Fun review. Thank you.

I know y'all were pretty concerned that she kept "turning her back to him" and what not but you have to understand that she probably thinks stabbing him in the neck, stabbing him in the eye, and then stabbing him in the stomach with a huge kitchen knife would be enough to kill a person. I also find it reasonable that she wouldn't check his vitals or something because what she is going through (which may be tame because of the gory horror films we get today) is truly terrifying. Imagine you being in a situation like that in real life, for instance. Not only does she assume that he should be dead at that point, do you really think a teenage girl would even want to touch a man who has murdered her friends and caused her so much terror? Some would. But i don't think it's annoying that someone wouldn't want to do that. As an audience we experience what's called dramatic irony. We know what the deal is, and the fact that he's not actually dead because we know there are sequels and what not, but she wouldn't necessarily guess that. Especially after how much damage she thought she had done to him.

I'm really weird when it comes to stuff like that. I get freaked out if there is something in the garbage disposal and won't stick my hand in there even though the chances of it magically being turned on is pretty slim 🤣🤣🤣

@@tashatipton2141 No, you didn't miss anything. Laurie is not Michael's sister in the original movie. If Laurie was Michael's younger sister she'd only be 14 years old. Also, it wouldn't make sense for Michael to stalk Annie for most of the night if Laurie was his sister. The whole plot twist of Laurie being Michael's sister is something that John Carpenter added to the sequel, Halloween II (1981), because he didn't have any ideas for a story and he only wrote the sequel for a paycheck, and Carpenter later admitted that the sister plot twist was a mistake and didn't make sense.

They rip off too many things from Halloween II (like Mrs. Elrod, along with the woman Michael kills while she's on the phone) that it might as well be a remake of Halloween II. It's also a bit too self aware with the Silver Shamrock masks from Halloween III. The only parts I liked were the scene with the motion sensor lights and Laurie's booby trapped house of horrors. The beginning of the movie was just awful.

Talking about how green the trees are for it being Illinois in the fall.....it was shot in California and you can see palm trees in some shots. But the fascinating part of it is.....it was shot in the spring and crew members had to paint leaves in order to make it look like it was autumn. But worse....they only had so many leaves available so the crew had to keep picking up the leaves used in a certain shot....keep them from falling apart...and then place them one by one for the next shot.

The book explains that there is an ancient evil that has a lust for killing. It moves through time taking over human bodies. Micheal was possessed by this ancient spirit- in essence he was dead already which is why you couldn't kill him. The line with "rip Lindsey's clothes off" was a mistake by the actor, he was supposed to say "Laurie's" . And remember, this movie was THE FIRST one like it... it created all the tropes everybody else copied.

The name of the town Haddonfield is based on Debra Hill's hometown in Haddonfield, New Jersey where she grew up. It's 2-3 miles from my home in NJ. It would have actually been a great location for the movie if they shot it there. In the movie, the town of Haddonfield is fictional and located in Illinois. There's no town named Haddonfield in Illinois. The shooting scenes in the movie take place in the Spring of 1978 in the Pasadena area of Southern California. That's why there are some palm trees occasionally in the background and a lot of green on the trees. The leaves you occasionally see falling were green spring leaves painted by the movie crew in fall colors and scattered and dropped for scenes to make it look like the fall.
@Masky5150

Lol Good eyes, the movie is supposed to take place in Illinois but was filmed in Pasadena, California. Halloween was a low budget production, not actually filmed in the fall so the leaves were fake and scattered around for the scenes, then raked back up to use in other locations. Originally title “The Babysitter Murders”, not until later was the decision to have it take place on Halloween night made. So yeah, the kids being home on Halloween was kinda strange lol. The movie was a big hit and a horror classic was born. The brilliance of low budget successful horror films.

Halloween was filmed in Pasadena, California. They chose the location because *apart* from the palm trees it could pass for a midwestern town. Also, the criticism of the neighbors isn't entirely justified; remember what day this movie's supposed to take place on. Halloween's the one time of year you EXPECT people to run around screaming like that, so the assumption was that Laurie was just a really good faker.

I'm pretty sure they shot this in California or something but john carpenter wanted the movie to be taking place where seasons are more interchangeable and noticeable but because of the small budget instead he had the cast and crew members just gather all the autumn leaves in their yards and bring them to set, making the scenes look as if they are taking place in the fall. So when they were finished filming a scene, everyone would gather the leaves up and spread them out for a different scene!

It's near impossible to understand the impact that this movie had at the time it came out. There just wasn't ANYTHING like it. There hadn't been a character like Michael Myers before, and the entire premise of the "Slasher" the "Final Girl", the "Un-killable Monster Man"... All of those things were basically set up in THIS Movie. Not to mention, the score/music was talked about for decades, just like when Jaws came out I suppose. I am not old enough to have seen Halloween when it first appeared in Theaters, but a couple of my Aunts and Uncles were... They said that it was one of the scariest movie experiences they had ever had, and when they left the theater, people were walking to theor cars and they were afraid Michael Myers was gonna jump out and get them! Horror movies have a difficult time holding up through time, but Halloween will always be one of my Favorites!

This is just my opinion, not based on any information about Carpenter's intent. I think Michael is a movie version of a certain type of child character that is often used in horror fiction. He's not just criminally insane. He's not really human, so he can't be insane, that's a term that only applies to human. When it's asked in the movie if that was the boogeyman and the reply is that yes, in fact it was, I think that's an intentional hint at Michael's true nature. It would explain why he can be stabbed and shot and still keep on going.

Great reaction vid. I did enjoy. However, keep in mind that there is Halloween 2 that came out in 1981 that takes place on the same night. However, the actual canon for the Halloween series is Halloween (1978), then Halloween (2018). It can get confusing but there are like 3 different timelines. But the actual canon is Halloween 1978, Halloween 2018 which takes place 30 years later, Halloween kills and Halloween ends, which have yet to come out. Feel free to check out the other films when you get the chance and make your own judgement about them. And Michael’s eye was messed up because Laurie poked his eye with the hanger. However, he is a normal looking guy which makes him even scarier when you think about it.
