Michael Nyman: The Composer's Beginnings in Music & Search for Polish Ancestors | Documentary Clip

Excerpt from the documentary "Michael Nyman in Progress" (2010) on the English composer, musicologist, librettist and filmmaker. With subtitles in Polish and German.
Nyman gained fame due to his scores for the films of Jane Campion ("The Piano"), Peter Greenaway ("The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover") or his soundtrack album for Michael Winterbottom's "Wonderland". Nyman is also the composer of many operas, such as "The Man Who Mistook His Wife for a Hat" or "Letters, Riddles and Writs". In this touching clip from the documentary, the composer elaborates on his childhood beginnings with music and goes on a journey to discover the history of his Polish and Jewish ancestry.
This documentary accompanies the concert film "Michael Nyman Band: Live at Studio Halle", in which Nyman and his band perform a number of famous soundtrack pieces.

Michael Nyman, who is famous for his Oscar-nominated film score for Jane Campion’s film “The Piano” is without doubt one of the great contemporary composers. This documentary accompanies a live concert of the Michael Nyman Band at Studio Halle in Germany. The Portrait by Silvia Beck shows Michael Nyman in all his diversity and endless energy. It gives a unique insight into Michael Nyman´s very personal views, his thoughts and emotions; his world.
