A quintessentially traditional British gentleman... great insights and stories about actors and Hollywood, nicely spoken, humble and not someone who appears to have taken himself too seriously. I could listen to him over and over again.

Niven was very well known at Heathrow Airport, as he was a frequent traveller to and from there. When he died, the porters sent a wreath which said "To the finest gentleman who ever walked through these halls". That probably says it all about his character.

David Niven and Errol Flynn were my two favorite actors growing up in the 60's. I wish I had been born earlier to live the world as they did. David Niven was truly a gentleman. I live in LOs Angeles and everywhere there are stories about Errol and David. What a life they lived. Thank you so much for sharing this video.

@@tabascocat5102 you tell me of someone that is like him.... You can't do it. He is a throwback to a bygone age. Not better or worse than nowadays, but so very diiferent and charming. Aside from the perfectly charming David Niven , Michael Parkinson was the greatest tv chat show host ever. He asked grown up questions, had no ego (unlike a lot of other chat show hosts), did proper research on his guests, and most importantly, LISTENED, to what they had to say instead of constantly butting in.

Thank you to whoever uploaded this entertaining gem. They don’t make ‘em like David Niven anymore. Pure class. Given that it’s Christmas Eve I’m watching Niven’s outstanding performance in The Bishops Wife, per my mother's tradition. It never ceases to put a smile on my face. His natural witty British humor comes through in this interview and explains why my mother was so besotted with him. British accents are hard for me to follow I don’t get the joke at the end 🤷♀️ I laughed anyway. Extraordinary man.
@TheDoctor1225 Жыл бұрын
I don't know if you'll ever read this, but in British slang, to be "pissed" is to be "piss drunk" (the equivalent of loaded or VERY drunk in the USA, as I understand it). The gist of the joke was the play on the fact that when people are drunk, they usually stagger and weave and walk sideways, which is what the crab normally did. When the crab came in walking straight at the end of the story, the reason he was walking straight was because he was piss drunk. I hope you laugh even harder now 😄😄😄

What an interview. Hilarious. Thoughtful. Quick witting. Observant. Fluent. Concerned about the person he was with. You see that in something as simple as alerting Michael that a fly was in his water. In another interview he was concerned he might be boring Michael, not in a dismissive or egotistical way but apologetically. He wasn't remotely boring him or the audience but again it showed his concern for others. It is no wonder he wrote two of the funniest books I have ever read. He was such a natural story-teller. Interviewers adored him. He was a pleasure to meet, a joy to interview, and the epitome of courteousness. We were blessed to get to see him.
