June 22, 2012 History, and I mean history has been made. The speedrunning community was in total shock at Michael Phelps’s run. His 200 fly speedrun is any% broke the previous record by over a monumental second and a half. His achievement singlehandedly brought him back into the speedrunning spotlight, causing people to even think that this record would never be able to be broken. How did he break the record by so much? How was he deified to such extend because of this run? The 200 fly any% speedrun is one of if not the most challenging runs on the field. Not only are each timing and progression extremely difficult and inconsistent to get it right, the few skips that can be found are incredibly sparse, which further emblazoned. Every speedrunner in the butterfly categories knows the strategies of glide, form, kick, and pull. It’s important to do each of those to maximize the momentum generated by each push. However, years of training have brought the techniques deeply into muscle memory, so analyzing them for each of the speedrunners is virtually negligible. Then what caused the world to idolize Michael Phelps so much if all of the speedrunners had the best form that can be done? The skips. Right at the beginning, Phelps and many other runners in the heat used the momentum glitch where he was able to maintain his momentum from the dive to increase his speed. This isn’t a very notable skip however, considering it’s used by the majority of runners of this run. Phelps, however, does not do the midpool skip, where he could have saved some time. The midpool skip is done by a runner using the middle of the lane line, which is holds the least tension, to glitch forward a noticeable amount forward. Because he didn’t do this skip, he was trailing behind others who did do the skip, such as famed Japanese runner Takeshi Matsuda. Phelps does bring it back with a skip that is infamous for being unreliable and game breaking. He does the black tile skip, where he uses the black tile to glitch and propel himself back into the lead, in front of Takeshi Matsuda. Doing this is most definitely not encouraged by other runners because of its inconsistent nature and difficulty to pull off. For this reason, Phelps’s record became incredible for his skill and consistency at pulling off such a hard skip. Phelps does the unthinkable. As people were in all at the black tile skip, they failed to notice the next skip he did until they rewatched the run. Phelps successful pulls off the flagpole skip. Not once. But at every single lap. Doing this is absolutely game changing, as he has only pulled this off once before in a stream he did months ago. The flagpole skip consists of a runner lining up exactly with the flagpole and turning at some slight angle such that the game’s code makes a mistake and sends the runner forward slightly. Phelps didn’t do any other skip after this. He didn’t have to. All he had to do is bring it home on the final lap before getting his famed record of 1:51.51. It would take over 7 years before anyone else would break it. He has changed the history of the 200 fly any%. Phelps also breaks the 100% record also in the 2016 olympics, but that record is another story for another day. He has set such a high standard for runners in this field he has been labeled as a symbol of top performance as a speedrunner in general. Of course, records can only stand for so much time. Up and coming speedrunner Kristof Malik beat it again by almost a second, and it will be time before he’ll be able to get the first sub 1:50 run. From that day on, I doubt speedrunning will ever be the same without Michael Phelps.
