Phelps- The thing that separates the legends/icons from those who are talented and do well in a sport is the ability to forge ahead, compete, and win despite having a target on your back, and despite personal adversity and mental health challenges- the decision to never give up- especially when there is a deep field of competition and even if not feeling your best emotionally. It is the absolute hatred of losing and the determination to do everything in one's power to ensure that never happens. That is Phelps.

He's also an all rounder. He does the 100 free in relays all the way up to the 200 fly to even the 400 IM with devestating power for his time.

Now somebody needs to replicate his killer instinct- the closest who's come to it so far is this Popovici kid. We'll see. Time will tell.

@@federalisticnewyorkians4470 Dressel himself recently said in an interview that he could not swim the breadth of events Phelps did because he doesn't have the range. I say maybe he could if he really wanted to try but he's limited himself and won't. THAT is the difference between Phelps and Dressel. Both great swimmers. One a mental shark who refuses any limits to success.

Mostly start and underwater phases. If you check videos from 20 years ago you can see how much more refined those techniques are today. Obviously Phelps helped paving the way on this side.

Building muscle also helped. They are very strong now, check how the récords that last are those mainly longer distances.

Most of it is that dressel is a sprinter, Phelps was not. He was far more comfortable in the middle distances than he was in the 100 fly, and he said himself that race always made him the most nervous.
