Alex - it never ought to have been politicized but when enough people panic, bureaucrats, wishing to keep their constituents voting in the right direction, tend to make things forbidden. And if a tipping point of woke people occurred, the bureaucrats power base would shrink drastically. The sleepwalkers who follow authority would cease to follow.

Gary Ratoff - Absolutely. What worries me about this new wave of psychedelic advocates is that they are promoting this as some kind of miracle that can do no evil. noble lashley I haven’t done mescaline, but I definitely agree re acid and mushrooms. That being said, one of the best times I’ve ever had was in the ‘80s when I tripped on mushrooms on a Thai beach (still legal at that time) and watched the water move around the rocks and send me signals from Mayan civilization...it was really really hard tripping, and crazy fun. Conversely, I also had my worst experience in the same place a few days later when the palm trees overhead turned into gargantuan tarantulas coming to devour me. I stood on the beach and screamed my head off.

I did psilocybin truffles in Amsterdam a couple of days ago. I set myself up in a nice hotel room, dimmed the lights, fetched the playlist used by the team at John Hopkins Medicine and put on a good pair of headphones. Having been constantly depressed for 30 years (from 16 to 46), and having tried all the usual meds and treatments (and failed miserabely), this feels like the day my life changed for the better. It was an amazing experience. I´m so thankful for everyone who has shed the lights on psychedelics and that are making the world know the beautiful truth of these spectacular substances.

I love MIchael Comments at this part: "I had this experience of complete ego dissolution, my sense of self fell apart it was like a bunch of post-it's being blown in the wind. Then i saw myself spread out on the landscape like paint, but i was still seeing it. It was an experience from a new vantage, I wasn't my usual self. I know it sounds weird and we don't have the first person pronoun to explain this. But what it taught me was, we assume we are identical to our ego, this chattering voice in our head that's telling us what to do. It can be very harsh, sometime telling us what to do, but it can also defend us against fresh experiences, emotions, against other people. It was that voice, that dissolved, in such a way that felt "ohh...I'm not identical to my ego". There's another ground on which to stand and take in reality. It's really the idea that; these defenses you've built up over your whole life, you don't need them and you can lower them and not face complete annihilation. ""

A fairly big regret of mine is not being able to help an aunt of mine that had a terminal diagnosis and was absolutely terrified. Her and my uncle were very straight-laced normal suburbanites. Very regular people that knew next to nothing about drugs of any kind. I regret that at that time, societally we just weren't all able to have a conversation about what psychedelics are, how they effect you and how its possible to lessen the fear and anxiety of death. As people have a finite amount of time after a terminal diagnosis, it would have been a serious uphill battle trying to introduce such concepts to a layperson. I do regret not trying though as she had a terrible time of it, as most of us would.

So you're confusing change with replace, and that change, with personality overhaul. Only in severe physical situations of the brain does a personality change happen... On the other hand, simply learning something new can alter your perception or sense of self. You were funny, but glib.

@@ross8314 I took 1 g of psilocybin cubensis. I went to my living room ;) It was during the middle of the coronapocalypse, so travel wasn't really possible, otherwise I likely would have gone to the Netherlands to a retreat. But I don't regret doing it at home at all; in fact I think it may have been better there. Doing this sort of thing for the first time in a group or with strangers, could just make it more stressful.

I did a similar research in my 20's. I read "The Electric Kool-aid Acid Test" in my teens and "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" following that. In my 20's I followed on and tried writing, as Ken Kesey had, but I was lousy at it. However, my ability to sketch was greater. So I turned to that when I tripped. I gave it up after about a decade. I had learned all I needed to know. However, I retained the sketch skills I taught myself while tripping. I don't use them often; I prefer writing. Still, it's nice to know I can do it if I want to.:)

It's all your perception. Tune or warp. Always an ally. It's mental medicine and you are cleaning your consciousness. I liken it to dreaming while awake. Almost all of your dreams you can interpret and understand the symbols even the scary ones. There is meaning in all of it.

Michael advocating psychedelics is very important to the subject cause he's an "outsider" who really did his research and found out the great potential to the use of these substances. Someone who housewives admire due to the kind of books he would write before this one. So he has credential with the public that usually wouldn't even know about this stuff. It's a great read, btw.

I'm glad he asked if he tried but I am studying this and the fear of researches to say that they have done the drugs is real. How can you truly study a psychoactive drug if you don't try it, at least one with such few side effects, I understand not trying heroine for instance?

Thank god for this man. A very well respected, intelligent and grounded man on the front lines for psychedelic research. It’s a shame he only has about 6 minutes to explain something that really deserves hours (that’s where Joe Rogan’s podcast comes in). I’ve had plenty of mushrooms/LSD trips that completely changed my life when I was in a crippling depression mainly because of drug abuse. That may sound ironic, but psychedelics should never be lumped in with and compared to other life destroying substances such as painkillers or even Xanax. It’s a shame that we’ve only begun to start studying psilocybin, LSD, MDMA within only the last 20 years. If we had started in the late 60’s, I strongly believe most of these “drugs” would be FDA approved and helping millions. Either way, I’m thrilled that we’re finally starting to take the scientific research and benefits (with mind blowing results) seriously, slowly accepting the fact that these substances could literally change lives in the most beautiful way that words could never describe. If everyone could be lucky enough to have the most profound experience a human could ever have, the world would be filled with nothing but love and would be a much better place

There is absolutely something behind these experiences. I have used them for 20 years in a pursuit to discover what reality is behind the curtain of self, time and matter. Let me tell you, whats behind this curtain would completely change the way we think and behave as humans. The implications are beyond extraordinary. I truely think that traveling outer space is a concept of the primitive. Inner space connects us to everything in existence. We are a part of IT just as IT is us. Freeways between it all and it’s accessible. I find it shocking that our culture is yet to discover this. It’s so massive it will change your life forever. It’s clips like this that will usher in a new way of thinking. A way of thinking that just may be the only change fast enough to save our species from self annihilation. DO YOuR OWN RESEARCH.

Psychedelics can teach a lot, but the things you learn from them don't tend to last (at least in the experience of.... ahem.... a friend of mine). It's hard to integrate those lessons into your waking walking life because they are so tied to this very atypical experience. Whereas the insights you gain from serious meditation (like a 10 day vipassana retreat) tend to last much longer. But yeah, that kind of meditation is difficult and not super fun. Psychedelics are easy and (usually) fun.
