Surprised he does listen to other bands. As guitarist I like listening. I’ve been a fan of Michael for a long time and he’s the reason I started playing a guitar. Great interview.

I think we should read between the lines of what he's telling us. If you take the old albums, and read their pamphlets, you can notice how there's a leitmotiv that starts since Lonesome Crow, that says Michael Shenker is the lead guitar player, and Rudolf is the rhythm and lead player, so when Michael left it's been spreading off this subtle meaning that Schenker (Rudolf) was still also a lead player other than a rhythm player, and this has gone to the point where you can clearly read on the original pamphlets Schenker (Rudolf) indicated as a lead/rhythm guitar player. It was some kind of brotherly way to take his part in his brother's ideas. Michael was clearly a main leading guitarist, and he had been educated to that also by his bigger brother, but sometimes this kind of relation can become a bit sufficating, something as slightly as a "complex of Oedipus" between brothers. So the younger one has always to remain a prince because the older one is a king, and he still stays a prince if he remains under the guidance of the older brother. At some point, the younger one realizes that he can spread his own wings only flying away from the older, and that's all. Rudolf was overprotecting and taking possession of the results that he contributed Michael to gain...

In the songwriting, he is simply stating that they were continously in contact, so that Rudolf could read in time how to move by knowing the experiences Michael was having in UFO. Taking advantage is not always a negative action... Rudolf was gaining from his younger brother the results back of what he had done when helping him to learn the guitar playing. Michael often tells about his brother giving him money everytime he learned a new song on the Guitar... Later on, the advantage that Michael had in learning guitar due to Rudolf, was also a result of Rudolf 's brothership, and Rudolf somehow was keeping on gaining back from Michael's brilliance his prize in playing with the Scorpions and reaching a good seat in the world of modern music.

Ah. My new guitar God. Michael Schenker. Who I sadly discovered in my 30s. Prob 20 years too late.. discovered for myself, not making him famous. Not that anyone was confused about that lol

I got lucky and saw him twice in the 70 s with UFO. The reason I fell in love with UFO was the guitar playing. UFO was the back up band for B. O. C and the Outlaws if ya can believe that.

I'd love to read Michael's autobio. Too bad he threw it away. I'd like to know more about the relationship Michael had with Uli Jon Roth. Michael, Uli, and Gary Moore were massively influential on American (and European) guitarists, but were never HUGE rock stars here, in the US. What's weird is Michael keeps talking about his 1980s as being "experimental" and I actually think he believes it. What he did was start using the harmonic minor scale, some Phrygian stuff, more chromatics...and he thinks that was experimental...because he's not like Uli, who really knows music theory deeply. Also: UFO were in LA a year before Van Halen got signed, and Edward (and Rhoads, Lynch and other LA hotshots on the scene then) really made a huge impact on his playing. His soloing on Obsession - done alone, with just a producer in a huge US mail warehouse - sounds like a very different guy than the guy on Lights Out. There's nothing in the entire UFO catalog that sounds like his soling and fills on "You Don't Fool Me", "Pack It Up And Go", " "Hot and Ready" and "One More For The Rodeo." It's proto-shred! He sounds influenced by the young LA virtuosos. That probably led to more "experimentation" but my gawd Michael: listen to Steve Vai's Flex-able record: now THAT is a shredding rock guitarist experimenting! Still: what Michael calls "experimenting" I think qualifies as "expansion of structures and melodic palette." I love the MSG stuff after he broke with UFO the first time. Still: one of my all-time favorites: immaculate, tasty, uncanny in his melodic rhythms, and always a fantastic tone.

Don't get me wrong, I love MSG, but they never seemed like an experimental project to me.

He's a bit delusional, which is why there was problems when he was in the Scorpions and UFO, his own band wasnt a lot different to his other bands. He didn't really experiment in the 80s musically.

Seems like Michael looked back on his chaotic life then weaved a story around it to try to make sense of it. Mostly to himself.

@@michaelstephen819 Yes. I love him, but I think you nailed it. I think a LOT of people do this: developing a self-narrative in retrograde introspection. As Nietzsche would say, "Human. All-too human." But still: he's beautiful. Elegant phrasing, perfect vibrato, uncanny melodic sense: a great, great player.

"i gave him the name back for free" .....how generous a guy, lol. power play the name (ufo, which existed BEFORE you became a part of the band) into your own, then "give it back for free" thats tantamount to taking candy from a baby, giving it back and telling everyone what a great parent you are.
