I saw Michael race once at Melbourne. We were sitting 150m from the corner, and every driver, besides Michael was downshifting and braking. Michael pulled another gear and braked at 50. It was absolutely insane to see the Faz belting past and going faster before braking. And he was dominant. He could have braked at the same points as every other driver, but he was driving exactly the same, lap in, lap out, flat knacker and braking at 50m. I had an amazing experience at the drivers parade where I was near the track and held up 5 fingers and pointed at Michael, as, going into the season he was 4 times world champion, I was so confident in him winning I held up my 5 fingers. Michael god damn saw me, pointed at me, thumbs up and nodded at me. I was absolutely blown away. I remember watching the race he took the 5th title on and it was a really moving experience for me, that such a great, dominant man saw me, understood what I meant, and acknowledged it, and did what I had, and a lot of other people, had tipped him to do, and won that years title. Keep Fighting, Michael.

If you really want to assess Schumachers natural given talent, you just have to look at his last 3 years in Mercedes. Understanding the fact, how hard it is to end a career with 36 years of age on top of a Champions League level, being retired, having a difficult motorcycle injury and then come back into Formula 1 years later (older than 40!! imagine that) with changed rules and EXTREMLY limited opportunities of testing the new cars and it's tires, that changed so much during the years.... ... and still being able to reach the same level as Nico Rosberg in the last of these 3 seasons (who a few years later defeated Lewis Hamilton, who is one of his generation!) for me was just mindblowing!! Those who really watched the 2012 season, know what I mean and those who remember the Nigel Mansell's "comeback" with over 40 years old (also a great driver!...also in the Indicar Series!) know even more how to evaluate the 2012 season. 1:14 I think Johnny is a little bit mistaken talking about Senna's throttle control. In the turbo era, Senna was the only driver to perfect the way to keep the turbo spun up, which was necessary to reduce turbo lag. It's a little be silly to compare that throttle control using a turbo to a normally aspirated engine.
@the_bandit7710 жыл бұрын
Of course, you know more than Johnny who is an F1 driver ;-)
@DaigoParry9 жыл бұрын
But Senna does that with naturally aspirated road cars as well. See Senna's footwork in the NSX in Suzuka. But to be honest, I'm not sure if there is any correlation between the 2, because F1 cars and road cars are totally different in terms of power and grip.
@BollocksUtwat9 жыл бұрын
12x12surface They really aren't that different. The limit of grip is the limit of grip. When you're at the limit it makes little difference how powerful the car is or where it derives its grip from. All cars are basically just 4 rubber contact patches touching pavement.

@surewin177310 жыл бұрын
It seems like with his driving style he's never fully off throttle, even during heavy braking at corner entry. Being on the throttle a little bit during heavy braking minimizes the weight transfer to the front wheels, which then minimizes understeer. This way he can brake later and carry more speed into the corner. Here is a more detailed description of Schumacher's driving style. Pretty amazing. teamslow.aitchison.org/viewtopic.php?t=4807&highlight=schumacher

In the telemetry example, no braking was needed for that corner, so to slow down, all the drivers had to do was lift. He kept on the power through the the corner, rather than the usual coast to the apex and then accelerate after the apex.

Until it doesn't happen then i will still said Hamilton is still Rookie compared to Legend Schumacher himself. Even Toto and Ex Mercedes engineer himself "Ross Brawn" said it was Michael who helps Mercedes develop the car better and become best team because he know the feeling of car better than anyone else, he is engineer too who know what is wrong with the car in engineer language which is far important for car development, in his era almost no driver have mechanics background like Michael. No wonder I find watching Michael's cornering is like fast forwarded video when comparing to other drivers. I'm going to miss the days when he was in F1.

@hunt2727 (continuing) It's strange how Schumacher struggled in Donington while even Barrichello with his poor Jordan overtook him and was faster than him on the wet. Michael was extremely quick indeed, but he was only quick when he had conditions that favored him (a car suited for him, tires, managers telling him what to do and when to stop). Senna was fast in any conditions.

@waterfeelsgood Agree because the car of Mercedes was developed using datas of last year's so many things are developed for Button's driving style, which are at the opposite of Schumacher's prefered settings. I mean i don't say a new thing if i say in F1 in many situations we have to project a brand new car if we want to change something. So i wait the next season already, too.

Remember Hungary 1998, France 2004 etc etc...And he was very helpful with developing of the car, but that was Senna too. Still I can´t get rid of the flavour of nostalgia in one´s mind, when he says Senna was for sure the greatest...

@Charkow1943 continuing: So Schumacher could never know about something so damn obvious to the driver (as the software and the fuel rig) but Senna off course knew about something that is hidden under the car's chassi. Nice dude... About Mônaco, in 1985: Peter Warr send Senna to the track with old tires. Senna returned to the pits and said "please don't tell me to do this again. I don't wanna win like that". Peter Warr himself told this story many times (including some biographies).

This video was made long time ago , it gives a clear understanding of why Schumacher has so many problems with F1 2010 cars , his driving style in early 90's was perfect for F1 of the past , the telemetry at 3:45 gives us the ultimate key , steering corrections in the corner was a + back then , it's ironic to think that what made him ahead of others , is now an handicap with more technologies and electronic for a driving style... Herbert driving style was more adapted for today's cars

I believe Schumacher is still the best driver around. The lag in speed is just the result of the smaller frontwheels, which is completly against his driving style and probably gives other pilots an advantage. And if you look back to 1994, if Senna wouldn't have died, Schumacher would have a 30 point lead after only three races. I don't see why he shouldn't have gone for championship that year. And last but not least, he didn't always have the best car- think back of 94, 95, 00 or 03...
@kartcorse1914 жыл бұрын
of course he was! he has five world titles and had excellent rivals. now we got another century, but about the last two decades, schumacher was the best...and it is possible that any better can come...but we dont know yet...

How interesting: Senna and Schumacher seem to have mastered something of the same staccato/progressive throttle technique for cornering, which gives them a speed advantage in corners, where it all counts especially when overtaking. Back when cars had more power, a wider, more stable wheelbase and electronic aids were less prevalent (never mind active suspension in the early 90s) such delicate throttle control was key to not lose the car.

he was like a robot-driver because he didn´t want to show emotions and stay focused on his career... no matter what some other f1-fans might say, he was the absolutly best in what he was doing, i just hope he will keep that title of the best driver....

@Charkow1943 Not a Schumacher fan but one can not deny that no driver has done that in the history, to contribute so heavily to team's rise. He was a cornerstone of the whole successful Ferrari idea.

What surprises me is that Damon Hill of all people say he is a hell of a driver. I like Schumacher despite racing from his heart in dire situations involving him.

In the 50's the power density was way lower than today, the cars everything was different. Today such a performance as Fangio had is not possible anymore. Winning every second race for years. It is simply not comparable.

The Feedback a driver gives to the engineers is important. That is what makes Schumacher important, he can communicate with the engineers. Räikkönen for example is knowing nothing about that.

I'm not frustrated. I don't watch Senna vids to criticize !! You do it on Schumi vids !! So who's frustrated ? He's the best, that's all. You can support the one you desire, it won't change anything. SCHUMACHER WILL BE THE GREATEST FOR EVER !!

@WorthingRFU he never asked his team mates to go into the wall like they did for alonso in singapore. he pushed the rules to the limit, exactly like hamilton does now or like senna did. that's what a great champion does I think.

Best driver in history, Michael Schumacher. Probably, no other driver could beat Senna so many times in 92 and 93 with that Beneton. In fact, Schumacher was ahead Senna more times than Senna was ahead Schumacher in their races together. While the team mate of Schumacher was in bad positions, Schumacher was fighting with Senna and beating him many times. Schumacher, the best driver in history!

That steering wheel is the one I modified for Michael, Ser.#159/F1-001, on 5/22/95. I shipped it to him for the Monaco race...which he won. His resulting relaxed grip on the wheel improved the signal-to-noise ratio on the steering feedback signal (essentially the steering resistance). This allowed him to make those small adjustments you see at 3:43 that are invisible to his teammate Johnny Herbert who incidentally, laughed at Michael when he traced his hands before faxing me the tracings...look who's laughing now, right? I got into this a bit more and brought the wheel with me when I spoke at a steering conference in Berlin...videos can be seen here: www.SteeringWheelTechnology.com

That's a fascinating little insight that - thanks for sharing! The point you raise regarding his relaxed grip resonates strongly - I remember in some races back in the 00s during his Ferrari heydey, the broadcasters would fit a camera just behind the steering wheel just above his knuckles and you could see clearly just how loose his grip on the steering wheel was. Lovely little story on how he traced his hands as well - it must have been an honour to work for Schumacher and your story is a keen reminder of just how strong his attention to detail and clarity was.

this year we're going to witness a big improvement from him and his car, he may not win the title, but that whole team will be better this year. and to the guy below me saying that in "06 massa was becoming a match for him", don't forget that his only competition that year was alonso, and don't forget what happened in japan that year. cheers.

@godanselmo Hear, Hear. he is back because of his passion for racing, he retired too early to help massa stay at ferarri. He came back because passion is worth risking your reputation for. I remember an interview discussing his decision to return the phrase that stood out was 'I feel alive again' .
@Mummins15 жыл бұрын
Then he asked Schumacher if there is a problem with the car and he said in fast corners over bumps the car has aero problems. You have to correct that via steering otherwise you go off. All written in Zielgerade

Both Senna and Schumacher are complete drivers. Both ate, drank and slept racing. There is no point trying to pick the better of two. If one tries that, it would be biased in most of the cases.

@Mummins I can only remember the incident with Trulli in Australia 09, but that was a team decision. Schumacher has done many thoughtless things in his career.

Well, stastics usually can be disrupting. But I think Schumachers performance is quite good to be modest. In my opinion the great ability of Schumacher is to be constant. In combination with his great car, I guess he was just the best by far.
@tahmidw99214 жыл бұрын
One of the techniques he used was slapping on the throttle whilst braking. That ensured a very high acceleration out of the corners as the engine rev is higher with this technique. This is how I race as well, inherited from my idol Schumacher

If you ask Ross Braun, who was the driver who gave the best technical feedback that he's every worked with, it was Schui. And as far as Senna goes, did he not insist on getting Prost's set up in McLaren?
