Michael Shellenberger blasts Labor’s ‘sinister’ misinformation bill

Author Michael Shellenberger has hit out at the Labor Party’s “sinister” misinformation bill which he claimed would be an excuse for the government to “exercise control” over Australians.
The contentious bill aims to reduce the spread of harmful misinformation and disinformation on digital communication platforms.
“It would basically allow the prime minister and communications minister to criminalise any kind of speech. It has a provision that would allow them to censor misleading speech, which is just speech where people might get the wrong idea from true facts and accurate information,” he told Sky News host Rita Panahi.

The pandemic was when all of this censorship and its enabling linguistic tricks got rolled out to widespread support from so many of our citizens. The same linguistic tricks were then rolled out in service of shoving the Yes vote down our throats by so many of our citizens. Why would he feel that the citizens that so whole heartedly supported these tricks during the pandemic and the Voice referendum would not support enshrining them in law. Anyone who has spent anytime on social media attempting an open discussion will know many of our citizens love to silence and censor anyone who disagrees with them. When such a large number of citizens exhibit comfort with linguistic trickery and censorship and a whole lot more of them remain oblivious to the dangers they pose it should surprise no one that politicians will seize the opportunity to seize the vast power granted by the capacity to silence citizens. It’s the dream of all politicians to have no rocks in the road of their political will. That is why we have parliament. It’s there to place those rocks in the road so that political will can be duly examined. The will of the people constitutes these rocks in the road. Without them, we have no parliament and consequently, no freedom. Look at what’s happening in the UK.
