People who follow boxing will remember Michael for being a truly talented fighter who had a great career against top fighters. Some will remember him only for the Tyson fight. Spinks knew he couldn't hurt Tyson early, & that Tyson was a brutal puncher who started fast. The fast KO was almost inevitable.

Pops Johnson was a one-sided atomic bomber, while Michael Spinks was a boxing version of a "junkyard pitcher", who could change styles as an opponent's own style demanded it. The right cross to the body took a lot out of Marvin before Mike threw the one punch KO left hook. Win or lose, great performances by both boxers.

Most boxing fans know Jinx was one of the great Light Heavyweights. When he fought Tyson, he had pretty much checked out and received the biggest payday of his life. He was done, and it was evident in his effort. His disappointing performance does nothing to diminish his sterling boxing career.

@@fuchsiaswing8545. I agree. First saw him win the Olympic Gold Medal in 1976 when i was a teenager in the St.Louis area where he is from. He stayed undefeated for 11yrs. not only won undisputed lightheavyweight Title but first to beat Larry Holmes for the heavyweight title even though it was by split decision. He was an inspiration to a lot of young people in the St. Louis area, so he is known for way more than just one loss to Mike Tyson. He's also inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame.

At this point in Saad’s career, Spinks would’ve on a decision or a late TKO. The wars caught up with Saad, and he ALWAYS had trouble with taller boxers (like Yaqui Lopez and Vonzell Johnson).

Michael Spink junto con Archie. Moore Son los.mas grandes semipesados de todos los tiempos
@roberttynski68502 жыл бұрын
Without question, Michael Spinks is the greatest light-heavyweight champion of all time. Bob Foster, second, Archie Moore, third but Spinks is above both of them. He reigned during the golden age of the light-heavyweights and beat them all, except Saad whom he never faced. Qawi and Mustafa Muhammad could have each had long reigns if not for Spinks. His domination of the light heavies is over-shadowed by his loss to Tyson but my God, he was an incredible fighter.

I remember watching this fight when I was a teenager. There was a lot of disapproval of the playing of "Another One Bites the Dust" after Johnson was ko'd. It really was disrespectful and inappropriate, especially that Marvin Johnson was out cold on the canvas. I don't think Michael Spinks had anything to do with it, however. Saad had already stopped Johnson twice both times with left uppercuts. Of course it took him a lot longer. Saad was past his best but still beat Sutherland and Jerry Martin after this. I am not sure why Spinks went after the WBA title of Mustafa Muhammad instead of the WBC title held by Saad. Somebody ducked the other or maybe they were holding out for HBO money. In any event, Saad's management completely f_ed up voluntarily defending against Braxton. It was already clear Braxton was very dangerous as he had knocked out Rossman and easily decisioned James Scott. Even if Spinks beat him Saad would have made over a million bucks in a unification fight with Spinks in early 1982. As it was he did make 425,000 for the first Braxton fight and *350,000 for the rematch but the two beatings essentially ended his career. Spink's defense was not as good as Braxton's so Saad would have had a chance.
@Bankai_Musashi17 күн бұрын
Do ur research, Saad got destroyed by Qawi around the time Spinks dethroned Eddie & was wanting to unify. U can't choose which champ to fight as a contender child. Spinks would've destroyed him anyway, funny talking about defense, all Saad knew how to do was block & get beat up for 10 rounds then come back & get a knockout 😂
