What this video really shows is that the talent of the player and the craftsmanship of the luthier transcend things like selection of tonewood species. Small nuances aside, the basic sound is remarkably consistent from one instrument to the next.

All were very good but number 3 Spruce/Brazilian Double-Top was my favorite. Love the comparison and the compositions as well. Scarfullery was new to me. Kudos to Mr. Palmer for his musicianship.

Number 3 for me, though each is beautiful. This one has a beautiful clear and open ring. Stands out to me among the others. Probably the Brazilian and spruce pair without the turnavoz. Liked the comment about the wine comparison. Definitely agree.

The sound is similar on most of these but #3 stood out as my favorite for having sweetness but not too much over the top color or tinny sound

Wondering how Michael Thames hasn't been on my radar more in the past. These are all inceredible. Rare to find someone who can do both traditional and double top so well. - Beautifully played too!

For the uber prestige, sometimes inaccessible, concert guitar artists. For all of us not in that realm, “Fine” arts might seem arcane, but just focus on how it makes you feel. Art isn’t a noun, it’s a verb. Do art.

While the Spruce is beautiful, #1 and #3 are my favorites, I will always be a lover of the cedar top. They’re just so mellow and a calm delight to listen to. #2 for the win!

Interesting you picked out that guitar without taking notice of its construction. I wonder if you like flamenco and lute music. Flamenco guitars are traditionally made of these materials. As far as I know, its not the natural choice for classical guitars. But I think its a matter of taste and what you want to convey in a pieces. Hence, a man needs all these guitars. I prefer the modern Andalusian Guitars for flamenco. They have amazing technology and cater for the warm sounds and clearer sound you prefer in what we call the Blanco. Of course the guitar sprang from the lute like instruments and I too like the lute like expression you can get from a blanco.

Hi Matt To me you sound good on any one of Michael’s 5 guitars but sound the best on the Cedartop. Having said that, my preference in this video is the La Leona which has clarity and a sweeter, refined sound especially for recording and number 5 the Doubletop with Ziricote for sure will project well in a large hall. Thanks for posting...just love your fine playing and technique.

I can't put my guitar down even now with my crappie instrument and lousy technique. If I had your skills and one of those instruments I would never sleep. By the way: what stings were used? Thank you for the wonderful playing and sharing these magnificent guitars.

It's very tempting to see 5 Michael Thames Guitars played in a row. Matt Palmer performs exceptionally. And comparison is the mission. Not an easy one. Because, regardless of who is playing, the action of each guitar varies slightly in every different sample. Nevertheless, La Leona notably stands out most of the time particularly to whom brass tornavoz might be interesting. The trebles and deep timbers on average strokes are what make the difference in general. Having said that I would like to extend my modestly ranking: #1.Guitar 2 #2.Guitar4 #3.Guitar5 #4. Guitar3 #5.Guitar1

All of them great guitars, for me I would choose #1 or #4. #1 is very warm a balanced, has pleasing overall sound, but #4 has something very full and pure in the trebles, as well as a soft glow. highly evocative potential buy also seems also to have a bit of a slower response.
@rjlchristie6 жыл бұрын
Both 1&4 have the transparency and clear separation of voices of traditionally braced spruce tops, a feature I also like. To me #1 had a better bass response than the La Leona model. The cedar was as you expect, very warm. The double tops had a tonal thickness I associate with the new schools of guitar building, the lattice and double tops. Although they're initially very pleasing, I find my ear tires of their sound rather quickly. - My 2 cents, (42 years playing, University guitar major)

All 5 sound great. Well, I have a Michael Thames guitar, Spruce top and Brazilian rosewood b/s. Mine never sounds as good under me, but I believe it will be as good as any of these 5 guitars under Matt.

No 1. Those heavy basses of the double tops are a huge turn off for me. Don't like that at all. However unfortunately they all have "scratchy" trebles. That may be the player's nails or they're using trebles that are not polished.
