Because he had Butcher, Lineker, Robson and so on who were infinitely better players. Adams missed out on Italia 90 through injury I think. But the others were nowhere near the England quad then. It's funny how fans demand big-club players when they don't get picked. then demand form players from smaller clubs when big-club players get the nod. arsenal were a top team then. But apart from Adams, I don't think there was a case for another player to be included in the England squad. rocastle was brilliant, but perhaps he was already suffering from the condition that would take his life too soon. Also, respect for his fellow Scot. Class act. Sure, fell foul of the money trap. but so what? Who didn't back then? Treated disgracefully and discarded like a rag doll. Graham was twice the manager Wenger was. Liverpool fans were pure class too. Not a boo to be heard. Tbf, Arsenal aren't a big LFC rival and the flowers gesture at the start was possibly part of it. But LFC fans, in my experience, are the most knowledgable football fans I've ever met. they were magnanimous that night and they deserve enormous credit.

I'm a Liverpool fan, and I was evelen years old in 1989. And me, my older brother and my man utd fan uncle still remember this like it was yesterday. We were watching this together in my home in London. Arsenal had to win 2-0 at anfield to win the championship on goal difference...Nobody gave arsenal any hope. But i must confess that the FA cup final defeat against Wimbledon the season before was actually still in the back of my mind. Something had to happen in the second half. Smith then of course scored. And that's when me and older brother were beginning to s*** our selves if you like.. Coming into storage time.. me and my older brother thought we've got this.... Then...... 😭... Michael Thomas scored with virtually the last kick off the season... Me and my older brother were stunned. Fergie always said that he wanted to knock us off our perch. But i think that even though we were to win back the championship the following season. That was our last championship win. I actually do think that it was this tragic season and this game that knocked us off our perch. We have never really the same since. I must admit that I hated arsenal for a long time because of this.. 😂... But what i didnt remember was that they threw bunches of flowers into the kop as a mark of respect for the victims of the hillsborough disaster.. So kudos to the arsenal players and fans for that... Since the creation of the FA premier league. We haven't been good enough. Until now of course. This season will be ours, and the championship will come home...ynwa

Still brings a tear to my eye now, this game will never be suppased due to being a once in a lifetime league decider, plus also played on a Friday evening, almost unheard-of back in the day. RIP David Rocastle, a true Arsenal legend ❤

After "Hillsborough"...no one gave us a chance, like it was written in the stars for Liverpool...the Afc team handing out flowers at the start was a sign...and the Liverpool players lack of grace in defeat was the icing on the cake...

What was the late great Brian Moore and David Pleat going on about in re of the opening goal Moore thinks the Liverpool player's are kicking off over some non existent handball whilst Pleat thinks it's over an offside..... They were arguing about whether or not Alan Smith has touched the ball before it goes in. ...he clearly did.

Not an Arsenal fan, I came here just because I was doing a research about Michael Thomas who was one of the worst players of Benfica's history (Benfica is my team), it's shocking to find out he did this.

@arsenal0782 United 1999 was the best team ever. But United's success that year was partly because of the rivalry and competition with that great Arsenal team. You won the league at Old Trafford in 98. That pushed us on in 99. The FA Cup Semi Final replay at Villa Park in 1999 is the best match I've ever seen. Winning that game was the final push for us to win the Treble. Nobody was going to stop us after that match. The momentum from winning that game was immense for us. The rivalry we had with Arsenal from 1998 to 2005 was absolutely world class. Two seriously brilliant teams that absolutely hated each other and brought the best out of each other.

arsenal0782 I’m too young (well, I’m 30 now) to remember the Graham days but both my dad & uncle are adamant that that was our greatest ever side during their lifetime. They honestly believed with Graham at the helm, we were made of steel & could’ve competed in Europe but due to Heysel (thanks a lot Liverpool!), we were banned from Europe. They both said Everton’s team of 1985 was a great team but again they were banned from participating in Europe due to Heysel. Going back to your earlier point, controversial of me but I think our 2001-02 Double Winners were better than our Invincibles of 2003-04. Don’t forget we still had Adams, Dixon & Seaman with us in that Double season. Completely agree with what you say because we did allow teams to invest & we just never caught on. Our problem to date now is that we’ve never really replaced Vieira. Was Torreira the answer? He’s like a pit bull terrier & gets stuck in but sadly he’s no Vieira, although he has potential to maybe be Vieira. We’ve needed that steel that protects the back four for a while now. Hopefully Arteta can bring back the glory days at Arsenal but we’ll just have to see.

@DisobeyToday Liverpool’s 1984 treble winning side was better than that 99 team football was a more fair playing field back then. In the 90s sky basically bankrolled millions into united and no other team could stand a chance.

Nah, most times Barnes would of scored from that run... just a game too far for the team. The Thomas ball bounce of Nicol to put him clear through showed how tight that game was decided by... fair play to Arsenal.
@craiggerrard51174 жыл бұрын
It is surely to his credit that he didn't try such a horrible tactic.
@Project5am4 жыл бұрын
@Alan West to be fair Liverpool back then were the masters of killing of a game via defenders passing it back to the keeper thats was one of the reasons for backpass rule changed it was making games boring. But a forward player from a big team killing time upfront was a rarerity.
@grahamrogers3345 Жыл бұрын
As a Liverpool Fan King Kenny was totally responsible for the defeat as he had the team play a cagey defensive game. Had they gone into that game needing to win 2-0 they almost certainly would have done it.

"...or Liverpool will be champions for the 19th time". I loved Brian Moore but he was wrong on that, to be pedantic it would have been our 18th as we'd only won 17 at the time and won our 18th the following season (89-90)
