Hi michael, thank you very much for all the teachings. My personal prefered method is "imagining" the voice going somewhere. Is it possible to achieve proper vocal placement by imagining the voice going through or into your forehead? basically above the nasal cavity?

Thank you very much for posting this lesson! I will have to re-watch several times to make sure I catch all the points you make. For example, it was very useful for me to see the tongue placement re: diction. I have been told to make the 's' sound with the teeth striking at the place where the word "net" ends. While I have been improving, I didn't understand why that was desirable in the first place. I thought there was less air hissing out. But your explanation and demonstration of increased true-mask resonance is a big motivator to improve my diction habits. Another point you made is that the tongue root should be loose to enable the tip to be super-mobile. And yet another point is that much of (my) jaw movement is not necessary and actually undesirable and indicating too much jaw-tongue connection. And yet another point is making the fricatives and the 'm' with the lower lip "out" or "forward." It was very clear in your demonstration of in vs.out what gains can be made by adjusting the lip placement. I have been told not to push my jaw forward, so I need to work on lip-w/o/jaw. Lots of things for me to work on! Many thanks again!

My teacher sang opposite James Morris regularly. She told me about a Walkure they sang together, and James made a point to sing all of Wotan act 2 without opening his mouth more than a finger's width. The small mouth was a fundamental part of his technique. Bastianini had a pretty small mouth too.
