Michael is playing in a much more difficult time than Phil... Look at the averages these days and the competition... Phil had much less competition than Michael... So not comparable

Thats what I keep thinking. How was the competetion back in Taylors heydays? Averages are a good indicator. Back in the old days some teams and players dominated their sport for 5-10 years, but its not really comparable cause now the competetion has gotten much better and harder.

Mattij87 Well, you dont explicitly say your argument. But I guess you are argueing against people saying that Taylor is better because he dominated the world elite for so long. In my opinion the only way to evaluate the overall success and performance of a sportsman is to compare his performance with his competitors. Because only the competitors of the same era played under the same conditions. Darts players these days are all scoring better than Taylor, Bristow, Manley etc. 20 years ago. Do they have become more intelligent or more talented ? No! Training has become more professional and Darts equipment has become more professional (less bouncer). Thats why its a lot easier to reach a 95+ average today than back in the days of Taylor. If a person with Taylor's talent, his ambition, his discipline and his mental strength and his attitude would have been born 25 years ago, he would dominate the darts elite almost like Taylor back in the days. And if a Van Gerwen or a Michael Smith would have been born 60 years ago, he would have never reached 100+ averages and probably had no chance to win a world title. So, yes, Van Gerwen at his prime is much better scoring than Taylor at his time. But since the condition were a lot different, you cant just conclude that Van Gerwen is just a much better, more talented player.

Taylor also played for much less money than MVG. Most of todays players would have no motivation, because at that time you didn't do it for the money. Much harder to train too, if you still have a job and can't play for 5 hours a day. If we put all speculation aside, and put facts on the table: Wright, Price or Anderson aren't any more of an opponent than Raymond van Barneveld, John Part or Adrian Lewis. In the end of the day, their era has overlapped, and Taylor is one of the few to have a positive W/L ratio against MVG, with 34 to 26. Played against MVG at the World Championship 3 times and won 3 times. Two times he went on to win the title too.

@@maxmustermann3876 your story has some flaws. It is a direct comparable fact that van Gerwen has way more competition. His competitors throw around the same OR slightly below his averages. Taylor his opponents where a Mile off his averages during his prime. Michael would have probably won more world titles then Phil if hè played in his era. due to the fact that he was at the top at a younger age, prolly a more RAW talent. Infact hè might actually still reach Taylor his number despite the competition.

This is why the USA doesn't have big shot players. Because of the age limit on bars you have to be 21 to go and play. At this age, European players are already semi pro

Time for you to hear Barney's story. He became good at his own room. His small Attic room. He wasn't allowed to go to the bars by his dad. Besides, I think that age is an excuse in darts. Look at players like Durrant, Gilding and Price. The biggest problems with darts in the States are that the PDC (and BDO I guess...) get few to none attention on national television. Another big problem is that the average American is very patriotic and believes that the USA is better in everything than everyone else. Don't get me wrong, but Americans are the only ones who think that calling a national sports tournament The World Series. Of course i'm referring to the MLB play-offs of course. And the last reason and also the one with the least impact is that Cricket (Darts) is very popular in the States. Yes it is a fun game, but not fair at all. 501 is more fair. The organisations of the USA should wonder if they want to get better players in the mainstream top, or that they want to keep the fun and arcade part of it, with the downside that they will not come close to the European (and Asian) top. That sounds like an easy question with an obvious answer, but most Americans want sport to be more entertainment and less the competitive and fair side....

Van Gerwen will overstride Taylor in every possible way, for sure. His throw feel so instinctive. There is no reason to me, for him to be outperformed in the next decade.

@@SR-mw4qe Van Gerwen komt wel weer terug, de dartresultaten van Price zijn niet indrukwekkender dan die van Van Gerwen. Als Price en Van Gerwen beiden hun niveau halen dan gaat Price er wel aan denk ik. Zou een gruwelijk gave pot zijn.
