US Open Tennis Championships

3 жыл бұрын

Rafael Nadal entered the US Open 2010 tournament as world No. 1 on the heels of French Open and Wimbledon victories. But in consecutive US Open semifinal appearances in 2008 and 2009, he won just one set in two matches as he bowed out to Andy Murray and Juan Martin del Potro.
He was improving on the hard courts, but still far from satisfied. Already a legend with eight career Grand Slam titles, Nadal had a point to prove.
Armed with a newly-bolstered serve that routinely clocked 135mph on the radar gun, the then 24-year-old stormed into the final without dropping a set. But could he find a way past Novak Djokovic to become only the sixth man to earn a career sweep of all four majors?

This era was Nadal´s peak in the game, from 2008-2010. His level was amazing, after these years it has been decresing a little bit every year. But he is so good that even this way, he has been winning tournaments but specially whe Djokovic or Federer failed. When Nadal was at this level (2008-2010) he was invincible.

Both players were seeking their first US open title. So it was precious. But see how Novak remained very cheerful in defeat, and gave Rafa all due respects. Notice how he took the cheque off Rafa to allow him free his hands to carry the trophy. So impressive. Not only is Novak arguably the GOAT. Nadal's service and backhand in this tournament were perfect. Combined with the forehand, I believe 2010 Nadal is the greatest player ever alongside 2017 Federer and 2011 Djokovic (I would put 15/16 Djokovic but that was rather uncompetitive with both Rafa and Fed being in poor form and injuries)

Thing is Nadal became less physically fit than this match over the years whereas Djokovic became more fit than this over the years, that's one of the main reasons for Djokovic's utter dominance from 2011-2021 now. Hard work on physical fitness with right kinda diet along with improving his game finally paid off very well for him.

based on this, there is no way you can convince me that novak was better in their 2013 USO match. I mean, it makes sense, right? novak was closer to his 2011 form in the second half of 2010(wimbledon - tour finals), than his 2013 iteration, some one and a half years *after* the *end* of his 2011 season, than 2010 USO, less than 5 months(4 and a half months), *before* the *start* of his 2011 campaign.

Frustrating as a Djokovic fan that Nole leads 10-2 against Nadal on hard court in Master 1000 events (82% win rate), but only up 3-2 on hard court Grand Slam events. No doubt for me that Nadal is the best Grand Slam player ever. Proves that Nadal is not the same player in best of 3 as he is best of 5.

Djokovic beat Nadal in Monte Carlo in 2013 but lost at RG a month later Djokovic beat Nadal in Rome in 2014 but lost at RG 2 weeks later Same with Thiem last 3 years, he was able to beat Nadal at Madrid, Barcelona or Rome, but never came close at RG ...
