Dai Vernon’s Tribute to Nate Leipzig
Today’s episode features this wonderful book.
I am grateful to Dai Vernon for documenting the magic of Nate Leipzig. All of this beautiful magic would have been lost if he hadn’t done so.
This book teaches some very important lessons about how to present ourselves to an audience. Yes the routines are magnificent, however, we must make our audience care. If we don’t, then our performance will be empty and meaningless.
Nate Leipzig gave us a template for how to present magic with class and dignity.
I hope you enjoy this episode of classic books and classic magic.
Michael Vincent

I'm not a magician, but I started doing a bit of cardistry recently (it's always great learning new skills). The first time I saw you, was on Penn and Teller's Fool Us. Your performance was riveting, and your handling impeccable. That was the first time I saw what true close up magic was. I really enjoy these uploads as well. Cheers!

Hello Michael, When you started talking about the two magicians that you felt embodied Leipzig’s quote I stopped the video. I thought to myself “I’ll bet I can predict at least one of the magicians Michael is going to name”. I was right. I also had the pleasure of Michael Skinner’s company one night at Lily Langtrys. I’ve never forgotten the experience and that’s been well over 30 years ago. He was a gentleman and a gentle man. You’re handling of “Tear Up With A Twist“ is beautiful. David Ben is the only other person I have ever seen perform this as flawlessly. Thank you for your inspiration.

I look forward to every video Michael. I was wondering, would you be so kind to do a few videos talking about your childhood, your parents, upbringing, siblings, interest besides magic...etc. I am so intrigued to learn more about you. I enjoy the magic side and intellect of your personality but I am so curious to know the rest of you. I hope one day our paths cross some way. It would be a true honor to shake your hand and enjoy your company for a few hours.

@@MichaelVincentMagic anything would be great.. try just a couple random videos telling your story.. I'm sure every person that watches is just like me. I'm just a huge fan. Not practicing magic at all.. I just enjoy the mystic and your storytelling. You can hear your passion in your voice so I would love to hear more about you. I'm sure your story is worth telling.

Brilliant as always, love seeing your skill. I remember you had a video uploaded of a few coin tricks you did on a bbc programme from the 80s (I think) and was wondering what happened to it? I used to watch it far too often but can't seem to find it anymore

Sir I watched your routine on Fool Us and it absolutely blew my mind away. I'm in Shanghai struggling to get my hands on those books, but Communist China doesn't have it and I can't get it from Amazon either 😫😕😢 Please Michael Vincent teach me card magic because I don't know what else to do with my Life.

Thank you for performing the cig paper tear. One of my earliest magic memories is seeing Henning do it on TV and thinking “OMGawd...I want to be a magician”❣️ lol. From then forward I got everything I could find on Nate Leipzig.

This is a wonderful conclusion to my days! As you were talking about Leipzig and how he used folks on stage to convey his magic to the larger audience, I wondered if he was the first to perfect this technique? It being 1907 and all.

Chris, I think it’s fair to give credit to Leipzig for this because I have studied all the great masters. He is one of the very few who worked like this. All the great masters had a great attitude abs approach to how the engaged an audience. Nate Leipzig is the first I encountered who featured a close up audience on stage with him in big Theatre. I have used this technique myself and it works. Cheers

That's neat to be able to trace back something like that. I really appreciate your passion for the craft through your knowledge of the history of magic and magicians. I am reminded of your performances at the Magic Castle to illustrate this concept. Truly masterful close-up magic, when you have folks sitting right next to you to see everything. Cheers to you as well my friend!

I think the torn and restored cigarette paper is also described in the stars of magic. It's in the section that's Vernon's tribute to Leipzig. Not sure if it's exactly the same though.

Looking for photos of the front of Alan Alan's shop as just curious but can't find any. Reminds me of the one that was in Northfields Brentford on the corner of Northfields avenue (is now a beauty clinic) that I used to pop in after school sometimes as it was just round the back of Gunnersbury school where I went in late 80s early 90s.
