If you think a ring is a suitable "investment for a relationship" (and holy hell what a twee, stupid statement that is), I think your portfolio o' love is full of junk bonds.

He shouldn't buy the ring, but expenses don't go up a whole lot when you get married, especially if you put off having children. There is usually double income, and maybe 1/3 fewer expenses due to married couples sharing expenses and things. Married people are wealthier than divorced and single people.
