That is just a bit WOW 😮😮😮😮😮 I love the idea of of the mono/stereo tone arms set up, saw something similar on another YT video a few weeks back, a clever solution to having two decks. Such a great set up, makes my little Rega P3 look a bit basic but hey ho it’s good enough for my emerging record collection for now. Thanks for sharing.

Than you for taking us on this journey of with you of this amazing designer who produced such an amazing turntable, this will be a stunning upgrade. It is not often that such a humble man and designer says that’s it, I’m done, I can’t think of anything else. I could see the joy in your eyes, you looked like a giddy little school boy. “When can I take it home, take all the time you need, but I hope you don’t take too long”. I can’t blame you Michael, I would be sitting on pins and needles until that beauty came home. Michael when you get this in your home, you must do a full video and full demonstration!!!

Fabulous turntable, as so many are. And now., it needs a zero tracking error tonearm to eliminate the initial distortion of the vinyl playback chain. A distortion which never goes away no matter how good all the subsequent components may be. And yes, once your ear has accustomed to zero tracking distortion, you will be shocked how easily detectable it is from then on.

I’ve also got a separate set up specifically for mono records with a mono cartridge. 2 tonearms seems to be the way t go, but I just fixed up a vintage deck for mono, as I’ve got hundreds of mono records. I completely agree with Volker about the regulatory part, whether it is negative feedback within an amplifier or a turntable you can only adjust an error that already took place, so it is kind of pointless. Let a turntable simply rotate a 1/10 or some 1/100 faster, and you are golden. Nobody ever complains that a turntable has too much drive ;-) With amp design it is basically the same, you only need a ton of negative feedback when you design it to work with speakers that already suck, a well-designed speaker does not need a ton of damping from an amp.

Maintenance free? The cartridges last forever? The belt too? 😇 Just kidding, I know that's not what Volker meant. Extraordinary table! I'd LOVE to hear one live one day. I suppose Michael is too much of an Einstein guy to test other waters and this does allow him to use one table in place of two, but if it were me and I already had a magnificent belt-driven Einstein turntable, it would be hard not to get a second table that uses a different drive mechanism. Even if it's only for mono playback, it's nice to have variety as each drive mechanism has its own strengths. Cheers!

I ended up not getting a SPU for my mono setup as mono SPU’s only come with large stylus tips, which can’t be meant for modern day reissues. Ended up with a Hana SL mono and a (stereo) SPU #1 for my second tt which is a Garrard 401 with Sorane sa1.2 arm. Playing mono records with mono pickup is great. Much better focus to the image and much less noise. Both for vintage and new records.

Congrats on the new table, Michael - it's always fun to get new gear. I don't have gear as high-end as yours, but one of the things I do with my old-school Technics table is take advantage of the removable headshell by having a stereo cart mounted on one headshell and a mono cart mounted on another. I just adjust the tracking force when switching between the two. You can really make an old mono record that plays with some noise when played wth a stereo cartridge sound less noisy when using a mono cartridge. Enjoy the new gear! Cheers, Tom

Hi Michael, It’s too bad that Volker had to go and make his super turntable.🙃 I like the aesthetics of your current model, and like how it’s chrome front goes with your other Einstein equipment. If you look into his recommendations, for Ortophon and EMT mono cartridges, make sure you get the stylus tip that matches your micro groove pressings, as they also make wider tips for records made before the advent of micro grooves. I would guess that all of your current recordings are micro groovy. I imagine that the Einstein tonearms use a detachable headshell, as Volker suggested the Ortophon SPU mono cartridge,which is mounted in a detachable headshell, as one choice. A detachable headshell makes it easy to have many sound flavors of cartridges, and switch them in seconds. Something you could do with your current turntable, if it has a detachable headshell. But of course, once you hear the probable sound improvement, with the new turntable, there will be no going back!

P.S. as to your mono cartridge, I would advise you to contact Ortophon and EMT, tell them what the effective mass is, for your tonearm, if indeed it’s a detachable type head shell, and confirm that your mono records are micro groove, so they can advise you correctly.

All LPs are microgroove, mono and stereo. Standard groove means 78s. The groove width for LPs was changed around 1967 once stereo LPs became more dominant in the market. There are 2 types of mono stylus widths, 25mil for use with LPs from 1948 up to about 1967, and 15mil for mono LPs after 1967. 15mil is also the stereo standard too.

7:13 He's talking about "Cogging" If its an AC motor there are poles in the motor that act like steps as the motor rotates around the poles. That's why a lot of companies that use AC motors use 300rpm motors versus 600rpm motors, less cogging, however good quality DC motors have almost zero cogging so a lot of Hi-End companies use DC. The challenges with DC motor drive systems are numerous but a well engineered DC drive will be superior to AC, and more expensive of course. I am interested in his mention of "no friction" in the bearing assembly. How is that possible? It's not an air bearing so how can he claim no friction? Very curious to know what he means.

@danielgeiger7739

Certainly looks solid. Had to chuckle about zero lateral movement, which is impossible as you need a bit of give and take for the platter to spin; no movement = frozen bearing, was nicely explained in the Rega TT book, part 2. The question is how much lateral force will yield how much lateral movement? Once you put a few kg/kN against the platter, there will be movement of a few µm. I liked the no speed adjustment, only speed accuracy (I guess that is what the computer controller box does, maybe with a trim option somewhere like on my VPI ADS). I thought it was also interesting for the Einstein person to ho-hum on tone arm differences; wonder whether that can be measured. The VTA adjustment is similar to VPI, but VPI has a graduated knob for repeatability. Micrometer screws are sufficient easy to procure in the homeland of Zeiss. Der Weisheit letzter Schluss? I look a bit more around.

@@tturner12341 I never had a Rega, but Harley Lovegrove of PearlAcoustics was raving about the P10 on his channel. Have his Sibelius speakers and like them a lot. Just picked up a book by Rega on Rega in Zürich: "Rega - A Vibration Measuring Machine - The Rega Book". There is very little literature on TT technology, so liked that. There are some obvious omissions in the discussion such as separating motor from plinth, but otherwise a welcome and enjoyable read. I currently have a VPI superprime scout with ADS and Soundsmith Zephyr MIMC* cartridge and an EAT eglow petite phonostage. Like it quite a bit, but looking for a two arm platform (so Rega is not an option), and/or a better phonostage. The P10 foam + bakelite plinth is very suspicious to me re long time stability. Any foam will disintegrate (think diving wetsuit etc.), and bakelite will become brittle with age. I am a natural history museum curator, so look at long-term durability of materials. The Rega P10 is certainly good bang for buck. You could get about eight P10 for one Einstein!

The only problem with this impressive turntable is the belt drive motor. Unfortunately best belt is no belt and I like so much 'direct drive' turntable like e.g. the Grand Prix Audio Monaco. Many years ago I owned a Platine Verdier and for me this was like a nightmare due to the tension issues of the belt. Never again. My opinion only of course. Thanks for this post
