To explain how it worked, as the drill dug into the structure, the rock was chewed up and turned into slurry. The slurry served three important purposes (according to the creators' commentary), clearing away material, lubricating the drill, and reducing heat caused by friction with the rock, which could otherwise cause the tool to fail. It is interesting to note that, based on the apparent hydraulic components of the drill, simply sabotaging the hydraulic system by busting the numerous pipes and valves might have brought the drill to a halt much faster than the wildly inefficient strategy the team employs. And this episode shows just how insane Ty Lee's chi-blocking skill is. Like being able to take out these tough earthbenders guarding the Outer Wall like nothing is incredible. Her style varies depending on the opponent. In The Chase against Sokka and Return to Omashu against Katara, it's the White Crane Fist. In The Drill, it's the Phoenix Eye Fist. The difference between White Crane and Phoenix Eye are the ways the hands are held. Crane uses a “beak hand”, while Phoenix Eye uses a one knuckle punch (a fist with the fore-knuckle extended). The advantage of the Phoenix Eye Fist is that it focuses all of your power into a single hard point, giving each blow greater strength and impact. As a result, Phoenix Eye Fist techniques often focus on strikes to the spine, in addition to the usual “soft spots” targeted in White Crane.

why do you always insist on making this long ass posts. Don't you have a country to run
@dargron76149 ай бұрын
We can perhaps forgive Sokka for not understanding Hydraulics after only a minute or two of studying the schematics, or the importance of heat generated by friction. Frankly it's a miracle that he even recognises the importance of the support beams, given that he comes from a land of igloos that don't even employ a supporting framework.

For an episode that’s basically just one long action scene, I think they did a great job. How they take down the drill and the climax remain exciting throughout, and it feels satisfying seeing them win. And it feels nice to finally get to ba sing se after all this buildup. Pretty good.

"The drill's metal shell is impervious to any earthbending attack" Meanwhile Toph discovering metalbending episodes later, "Hold my jasmine tea". We first see the plan for the drill back in the Northern Air Temple episode when the mechanist was looking at it while Sokka was talking about the smell of rotten eggs. So when it was revealed that the mechanist made new military technology for the Fire Nation, the drill was one of them. According to The Lost Lore of Avatar Aang (an archive of encyclopedia entries from the former official ATLA site), it took Fire Nation laborers over two years to build the drill. It functions similarly to a tunnel boring machine which is used to build tunnels for traffic and trains. The machine also bears a resemblance to the Ritter Midgard-Schlange, a 524-meter-long German war-machine devised to breach enemy fortifications in WWII but was never built. The name Midgard-Schlange is derived from Norse/Germanic mythology as in said mythology, the Midgard Snake was a monster which looped the whole earth with its giant length.

Chi blocking is a the best non-bending counter to bending, but it requires getting in close to your enemy first. Ty Lee is fortunate to be a professional acrobat so she can dodge most attacks and her movements are hard to predict, but generally as any non-bender who wants to learn chi-blocking your main issue is going to be getting close enough to your enemy to get 1 successful hit on the pressure points let alone getting multiple hits at a time. If you are starting off as a Chi Blocker you might want to utilize Stealth and Ambush tactics attacking first to get the leg up on your enemy before they know to suspect you.
