This one has always felt kind of weird to me. They try to paint Aang as in the wrong, while showing that these people are actually disrespecting his culture. I feel like they want us to like the mechanist, even though he’s defaced a historical landmark and pretty much contributed a lot to furthering fire nation military weapons. It still has good moments, such as the climax and the set up for the war balloons (which doesn’t pay off until 2 SEASONS LATER) it just feels kind of wonky to me. If there’s any episode I feel like they could go back to and kind of refine it a bit, it’s this one. There’s always the live action I guess, excited to see what they do with it there. BTW, Merry Christmas!
@rustyshackleford1345
@rustyshackleford1345 8 ай бұрын
I never took it as portraying Aang as being in the wrong. Definitely the mechanist could have done better in how he built his innovations at the temple. But they were refugees with nowhere to turn and he built those machines for the fire nation because he didn't really have anywhere else to turn. They sent a small army up there when he refused. They wouldn't have stood a chance and he knew it. Again not saying he was right. But when it came down to brass tacks he chose a side. One thing I wish they put more effort into was showing the mechanist apologizing for what he did to the temple, and at least promising to preserve what is sacred in it.
@skie6282
@skie6282 8 ай бұрын
I think your right, but i think they did that to show the stuggle and conflict in the world is more complex than right or wrong side. The air benders were, are gone. They inhabiteted the temples out of a good heart, but the fire nation threatened them too. They did what they had to to survive, but yes did not care for old history. Aang just cares about history, until he learns the inventions arnt only useful for the firebenders but for everyone.
@cloudwatcher608
@cloudwatcher608 8 ай бұрын
Yeah I don’t see the episode as trying to frame either Aang or the Mechanist as in the right or wrong. I think it does a great job of highlighting the very real issue that every developing society faces: how much should progress be allowed vs how much history should be respected. I’m planning a visit to Korea and Japan in the coming year, and in Seoul there is the Bukchon Hanok village that is, in the midst of one of the biggest cities in the world, a historical village filled with traditional Korean houses that has been preserved and is still an active residential area. I think that is amazing, but obviously other historical buildings and areas had to be cleared for all the modern development and skyscrapers. Where is the line? This episode doesn’t give a clear answer and I think that’s the point.

100% agree. my first reaction to this episode is basically im with aang all the way, theyre disrespecting the culture so its reasonable for aang to get angry. hope they somehow make it better writing in live action soon
@BookloversPQB4

I agree, they disrespected him so much, he not only is an ACTUAL airbender, but he’s the avatar, and they aren’t excited to meet him, they’re just excited to show him how they messed up his home, and ruined his culture, he just woke up and discovered his entire race has been wiped out, and he has to stop a war, and you are HAPPILY showing him how you ruined this historical monument, when it’s basically all he has left from his past. It’s just sad that you call this progress, like build your giant death machines somewhere else, this is an air temple, it’s meant to be separate from the rest of the world to protect them and keep the peace, and you are letting it all in, and ruining it. I’m actually gonna cry, why would they do that?

Love the episode-themed tea and your reactions as always Michaela! Merry Christmas :) Just a thought for discussion) 06:40 Isn't this the whole point of what Aang just said though? He's appreciating the fact that they are spirited and innovative enough to learn how to fly despite not being airbenders, and he's impressed by it. It seems he's letting go of the fact that they're not airbenders, and just genuinely appreciating their spiritedness for what it is. I don't really get why you're saying "Aang we know you don't like them 'cause they're not airbenders. Relax. They're super innovative and figured out a way to fly" when that's literally what he's doing...? Hehe

Merry Christmas Toph! ❤ Stumbled onto your channel 2 weeks ago and I’ve been absolutely enjoying your reactions. I always wondered how a VA would react to a series they themselves were in. Can’t wait till we reach Toph in just a few weeks! She was my favorite character when I watched this show growing up. To answer some of your questions, sadly that family was never mentioned in being involved in the construction of Republic City (feels like a missed opportunity now that you mention it). And you ended up figuring out they’re called Hermit Crabs. Coincidentally, I had the same issue the other day when I couldn’t remember Horseshoe Crabs and kept calling them Trilobites. We all have moments where it feels like we deleted the name of something from our brains and it takes us a few minutes to recover it.😅🤣

Honestly, I’m still mad at the people at the temple, they ruined it. And were disrespectful to aang when he is an actual airbender, they get all their Inspiration from him and his people, but when he comes they treat him like just some other kid, and that would be good, but I mean they bullied him as if he was just some random kid. And acted like they know more about the original temple than him, which was annoying. I still hate the mechanic guy and his son, even though they helped in the end. I honestly would have just murdered him right then and there, and my excuse would be “he works for the fire nation” then they would do research and we’d all realize it’s actually true, then I’ll be a hero 😎

The actual worst episode. So apparently desecrating another cultures holy cite is actually good and justified is you have a mild sob story. Colonialism! Oh and also cultural appropriation. But that one is better handled. The mechanists sob story is not anywhere close to a justification. You left because of a flood to place that is not safe from the fire nation and just stated tearing stuff down and installing you own stuff. The mechanist can not play dumb. He knows what the air nation genocide is. This is a real problem not just a thing of the past. There are current stories of the city, county state and federal people of the us desecrating holy cites and historic graves of the indigenous as well as the graves of ethnic minorities. “Sorry i know that was a sacred cite but other people exist. We want to build a mall!” So this episode sucks and i am just mad. Sorry for the negative rant. And before you ask, i am an asian American immigrant.
@BlackMercura
@BlackMercura 8 ай бұрын
Although I don't think the episode was trying to justify the mechanist's actions, it did seem awfully convinient that Aang just quickly just came to terms with it after being rightfully angry. That definitely made it seem like Aang was the one being uptight and "had to get over it", without really getting a apology from the mechanist or having a proper conversation of reconciliation and healthy compromise.
