I don't know if you know this about bankais and shikais . They tend to be opposites is theme . Shunsuis shikais turns child's games into reality . And his bankai makes grown ups games reality ( theatric plays ) and I strongly believe that he has multiple bankais the same way he has multiple shikais games . Cuz uk there's more than one play in the world .

The reason why Shunsui asks if the world seems dark and lonely is because in the manga Shunsui's bankai cast the entire palace into near darkness and gave chills to the everyone in it. This was likely changed to the yellow background seen in the anime due to the sky already being dark and cause it matches the backdrop of a traditional Japanese play.

Shunsui’s Bankai is portrayed as a stage play called "The Tragic Love of Two Lovers." In the first act, the damage is equally divided, symbolizing the sorrow of the couple who cannot be together. In the second act, a virus breaks out, representing the male protagonist’s long-lasting sorrow and terminal illness. In the third act, both characters reduce their spiritual pressure together, symbolizing the lovers’ pact to die together (“sinju” in Japanese that specifically refers to lovers' suicides). In the fourth act, a clean break occurs, symbolizing the male protagonist’s regret halfway through his suicide, and the female protagonist kills him with her own hands.

Oh I always saw the play between an abusive husband (not mentally well) and a victim woman: the sharing of wounds is the husband regretting what he did so he hurts himself the same way he hurt his wife , the virus in the manga is called the bed of shame and represents the husband’s regret and guilt for hurting his wife (depression being the disease) then the husband attempts to reconcile with his wife but both are in a deep depression as the wife leaves him unwilling to listen to him and he ends himself after she’s left

Ima explain the plot that shunsui's bankai tells: So some context, his shikai is based on children's games and his bankai is based on theatre plays for adults. We know this because the play shunsui is telling is a suicide story of a couple, a man and a woman. Lillie Barro is the man, Shunsui is the woman. In Act 1: because the man hit the woman, he feels great shame as if the wounds he inflicted he can also feel them (and it becomes real damage). Act 2: the man starts feeling even worse for what he did and develops a sickness because of this great shame. Act 3: as a way to atone the man drops into a endless ocean hoping to drown and the woman also drowns with him because she pities him. However, the man becomes a coward, starting to swim up to the surface abandoning his promise to drown along with the woman. Act 4: As a result of all this, the woman wanting to get rid of the man's regret and cowardness, cuts his throat.

Ello There! I don't think i saw anyone post the full explanation of his bankai so here ya go! Bankai Special Ability: Upon release, an aura covers a large area around Shunsui. This aura changes others' perception of the surrounding environment, making them perceive it as darkened, bleak and gloomy, and causes others to feel varying levels of melancholy and despair. While active, the Bankai will manifest into a tragic play with attacks featuring suicidal reenactments as different acts of the overarching narrative. Ichidanme: Tameraikizu no Wakachiai (一段目　躊躇疵分合, Act the First: Hesitance and Apportionment of Wounds): Any wounds that Shunsui or his opponent inflict on each other's body will emerge on their body as well, as if shared. Shunsui compares this to the story of a man who suffers from the same wounds as his partner, but cannot die from them. Nidanme: Zanki no Shitone (二段目　慚愧の褥, Act the Second: The Pillow of Shame): Black spots appear all over the body of Shunsui's opponent, causing them to bleed profusely. Continuing his story, Shunsui likens this to the man feeling shame after wounding his partner, causing him to collapse in shame and become incurably ill. Sandanme: Dangyo no Fuchi (三段目　断魚淵, Act the Third: The Severing Abyss): A massive amount of water engulfs both Shunsui and his opponent, who remain within it until one of them runs out of Reiatsu and drowns. Shunsui compares this to the two characters from his story, who both hurl themselves into gushing waters. I love his stylish Bankai, so let me explain a bit. I use a translation app because I'm Japanese. Sorry for my poor Englis. Shinju is a method of suicide practiced by ancient Japanese couples to show how much they loved each other and at the same time to confirm how unchanging that love was. It seems crazy from today's ethical point of view, but the amazing thing is that there were actually people who did this up until the early modern period. Then,that means Katenkyokotsu symbolizes children's game but Katenkyokotsu karamatsu sinju symbolizes Adults "game". His Bankai has the ability to conceptually kill enemy by following the flow of a sinju. And what I like is that his bankai is based on the 7-5 rhythm. The 7-5 rhythm is a way of speaking and writing using only seven-syllable and five-syllable words, and is a method of expression used in stage plays and poetry. This makes Japanese people feel that words have a good rhythm. All of his lines during Bankai,title of act,Bankai's name are in 7-5 rhythm. If you listen to his lines, you can hear his distinctive rhythm. Furthermore, his poem last week was in the tanka style, a typical Japanese form of poetry that uses 7-5 rhythm. Lastly,translate each word,it will look like these. ・Karamatsu(枯松) : Withered pine tree ・Tameraikizu No Wakachiai(躊躇疵分合) : Couple hurt each other in an attempt to commit suicide (but can't die) ・Zanki No Shitone(慚愧の褥) : The blanket of shame One thing to note is that this is the only coined term. ・Dangyo No Fuchi (断魚淵) "Fuchi" (淵) means "Pool" or "Abyss" but there is no Japanese word "Dangyo" (断魚). However, 「断(Dan)」is possible to read"Kotowari" so It can be assumed that this is related to Ukitake's "Sogyo No Kotowari"(双魚理). By the way,"Gyo"(魚) means "Fish". It's interesting how three of the oldest Soul Reapers all have Bankai that come in parts. Cause we know that a Bankai ages like fine wine, and besides Unohana's being way more straightforward, all the older characters do have Bankai with multiple stages. Yamamoto, Senjumaru and now even Shunsui. So interesting.

Shunsui has been my favorite character throughout the series from the first time I saw him, and although his fun personality, pink kimono, and drunkenness, along with his fondness for women, always made him seem like a basic funny side character, but I knew deep down that he harbored great power. And now, after 20 years of Bleach, it's incredible to watch an animated version of his bankai. Im so proud of you my Sake King, you're my GOAT.

Kyoraku Shunsui's Bankai is thought to be based on the 曽根崎心中 which are performances of the puppet show called Bunraku, which was born in the Edo period and Osamu Dazai's suicide by drowning. Osamu Dazai committed suicide by drowning with his mistress. He appears in Bungo Stray Dogs.

23:34 Its not that they would feel despair but they would become part of his play (Just like how Lille became without knowing) . His Bankai is like a sure hit effect with no miss . Once activated friends and foes , all become a part of his play that's why he can't use it with allies around (Just like Shinji) His Shikai makes children's games into reality . His Bankai is basically where he becomes the author of a play he forces his opponent in and writes his opponents end which keeps becoming reality . He just used four acts here but I am pretty sure he can have as many acts as he wants . This makes his Bankai really broken . btw fun fact Kubo was once asked if Shunsui's Bankai could defeat Aizen before Aizen became immortal and he didn't provided the answer to leave it to fans .

Shunsui's Zanpakuto spirit was Katen (specifically just Katen), he calls her O-hana which can translate to "my flower". She appears in the Zanpakuto rebelion arc, and her and Shunsui very much have a married couple vibe going on 😅

That was the line which I mentioned before which makes me think Lille either Spanish or from a colony of theirs. I think chocolate inglés is mainly played in Grenada. I think they play it in Brazil too though that was a Portuguese one I think. Not too well versed in the history of these places. Anyway it’s a random cool detail cause mostly kubo never gives away the nationalities of his characters. Although he said he had an Italian man in mind when designing Shunsui. Anyway the game Shunsui played and chocolate inglés is kinda like red light green light. Seems every region has a variation of that game. Think squid game. Anyway the big elephant in the room is shunsui’s zanpakuto spirit. It was original shown in a filler arc. It’s like the seven swordsman of the mist from Naruto most of them appeared in filler first before canon. In the old anime eps 230-265 Katen kyokotsu’s spirit manifested and the designs are exactly the same as here. Voice actor is different though since the old one took an indefinite hiatus. Shame since she was perfect for the role. New one is great too of course. Shunsui’s bankai is pretty cool in concept. His Shikai is to do with children’s entertainment and his bankai is a play which is adult entertainment. Also it’s based of a fairly famous play about 2 lovers which commit the word I might not be able to say on KZbin beginning with su. So that’s what the powers are based off it’s that play. I do wish they translated the technique names like the manga does.

Uryu Ishida was the first one to use Reikaku, when he first appeared! Finally we can see that famous bankai, and why Shunsui was the other Shinigami that could defeat Aizen with his bankai back then! I wanna see all bankai (sadly we probably won't have Ukitake's)

I remember when Ukitake said shunsui's bankai would be caught around others in his fight with stark and now I see why. he couldn't afford to use it due to so many close by at the time.

I really like how Kubo took one of the designs from the filler zanpakuto arc and actually made it canon with Shunsui's zanpakuto. I believe one or two more of those designs are used in the novels, but it's cool either way
