I love what he did with Hotter Than Hell. I'd like to have him raise the volume of the drums on Rock and Roll Over. The drums are at the right level for Love Em Leave Em, but for the others the drums seem way too low. I love Unmasked exactly how it is :). Maybe also do something with the drums on Paul's solo album from the "demo" sessions. I think those were the tracks done in New York. The last thing...make Gene's solo album sound more like Love Gun. Replace the funky bass with the bass on the demos, take out some of the background vocals, and take out some of the orchestration.

This is a modern take on what remastering Engineers have long been able to do to a less drastic degree. AI really enables you to zero in on frequencies in an established mix and pull them forward while ignoring others.... with the end result being you can practically render new stems of drums guitars bass vocals isolated and be able to apply plugins to them to clean them up Etc etc.... what is astounding to me is the lack of discernible artifacts and there doesn't appear to be any weird phase cancellation happening... here's attention to detail is really remarkable
@franKENstein620Ай бұрын
While there are some similarities, modern AI is doing a lot more than just frequency spike type stuff. From what I can tell, since we are in the digital age where audio is actually thousand of “slices” of sound, it takes each little bit and assigns it to one instrument or another. It is nowhere near able to completely isolate an instrument completely yet and there is still a lot of digital artifact in most cases. The better the source and the more sonic separation you have to start with, the better it is. The problem is that it often does not “share” the Sonic space. For instance, if there is a high end vocal sibilance that hits at the exact same time as a hi hat cymbal, it may “give” that slice to one or the other instruments and not both. What happens is that there these drop-outs on one or the other tracks. I have experimented with the best ways to handle this. Rather than running the whole track through an app that separates all of the stems at once, I will do each instrument separate. That way there is no “sharing”. I don’t get as many drop out in cymbals, for instance if I am not targeting the vocal at the same time. Same for guitar/bass. Especially if the bass uses any distortion or overdrive and if the guitar and bass are playing in unison (like Parasite). It has a hard time distinguishing between the guitar and bass. Also, if there IS distortion on the bass, it will usually NOT keep it and only return the low end and higher frequencies that it thinks “sound like the bass”. That’s is also why I often have to add that back in using amp modeling. No matter what approach I use for which instruments there is still a TON of manual stuff that I have to do. I will often pull “clean” high hat hits and manual overlay them to mask spots where the phasing is most noticeable. AI is still not out he point that people think it is. It’s not like you press a button and have perfectly separated stems. And when it comes to things like mono soundboard recordings with not the best sound quality, it is very, very poor. I often am lucky to get an enough isolated drums, for example to have a decent enough skeleton to build the samples around. Also with guitars, I often go through the songs and cut and paste “cleaner” riffs (where maybe there is no vocal going on) and paste over the rougher spots. I enjoy the challenge of “figuring out” how to make stuff work. It’ll be pretty boring when the day comes where we will be able to “analyze” the drums on one recording and tell the app to replace the sounds in another song (but keep the exact playing) with the sounds from the first.
@MARSHOMEWORLDАй бұрын
@franKENstein620 I'll tell you what my friend I admire your perseverance. Having had to do restoration on on mastered stuff from the early 2000s that had been crushed to death in the loudness wars, and not having access to the multi-tracks... I remember endless hours of sitting at the d a w and carving away at those recordings to then selectively invent new stems with creative EQ Etc that I could remix, invert the horrible Peak crushing limiting that was all over them etc... it was endless hours. So I very much sympathize with what you've put into this process, it's even more amazing that you were able to find alternate sources and things to bring in and line them up frequency wise not just Temple wise.... it doesn't come off like it's not to some artificial Grid or anything it really still has a personal life with the Dynamics in place and everything. I'm very very impressed with all you've done
@MARSHOMEWORLDАй бұрын
What is exceedingly crazy is that recently I was just working on some cover songs with a friend and I was going to dig into some of the songs just to discern the parts a little better when my pal through the thing into some five-dollar app on his phone and ta-da it's spit out six separate waves per song isolating the drums and vocals and guitars etc.... now it was by no means perfect but it was more than adequate to be able to listen a little more selectively and it took 0 so I would imagine to people with less Discerning ears they wouldn't know the difference.... granted I was feeding it PCM wav files so it had a lot of information to pull from it wasn't like I was trying to get it to read from some strip Mind MP3 file.... and it wasn't by any means perfect but very very easy to do and as a learning tool very helpful.
@franKENstein620Ай бұрын
@ thanks!
@franKENstein620Ай бұрын
yeah, for sure. Back when I started learning guitar in the very early ‘80s there wasn’t even tablature yet. If you didn’t read music it was only chord charts. Now with KZbin you can usually find a video of someone showing you exactly how to play just about anything. Also, with something like Guitar Pro and midi files that are all over the web you can get the basics really easily. I am a currently working on an expanded Elder remix which will have lots of extra stuff included. I have been incorporating orchestral elements in my own music since the early ‘90s in Anacrusis when I had to chicken pick the parts myself on a keyboard. Later I learned how to find and edit midi stuff (or do my own from scratch since Guitar Pro lets you “write” parts using a guitar neck instead of a keyboard). Someone was nice enough to put the entire Elder album online in cheesy midi format, but it is a huge short cut for me to take the basic chords, vocal melodies, etc and build a “score” around them. There are a lot of great tools but you still have plenty of room for creativity and figuring things out which is what I enjoy about it.

On the video when you guys were talking aout Peter playing to the vocal, it's really interesting. I've read Paul's book (all of them except Gene's books actually) a bunch of times. Paul talks about a time when Doc was motioning to him at a live show they you stink. Paul says Peter's effing playing too slow. Doc goes to Peter and Peter says so are they. No shot on him. When I listen to Kiss, it's the original Kiss most of the time. But he didn't lead the band. Even when he was an aggressive player and still had all his chops. I am a musicean, and reasonaly qualified. I don't want the drummer looking to me. Unless it's something new that I wrote and he needs to know when a change is coming. But, for tempo, fills etc. It's on him. I never had a her, so I'm not excluding anyone in case anyone has sensitivity issues.
@franKENstein6202 ай бұрын
Understandable, but the drummer (Peter or any other) doesn’t always set the tempo. There are lots and lots of songs where another member kicks it off and in the case of KISS (as I mentioned on the show) Paul starts Firehouse all on his own and is often playing it lightning-fast. Same for Ace on CDL, etc. Gene calls out the intro to Radioactive. These songs are all way too fast, but have nothing to do with Peter. Virtually all musicians tend to speed things up live, especially when you’ve been playing songs night after night for years. It’s not just Peter, that’s for sure. My band did tours where everything was nearly double-time even though it doesn’t feel like it in the moment. There are so many factors involved live that it is a given. That’s why often drummer will keep a metronome at the kit to get a quick reference before starting the songs. I don’t mean playing to a click, just a little “reminder” of where they should be, tempo wise. Works great.
@mcflottyАй бұрын
@ Fully agree. I think my point was mostly, he took all the shots for it from Paul pretty harshly. His skills weren’t what they used to be at that time, but he was serviceable. I saw the reunion tour and left a happy man. I didn’t leave saying if they had a better drummer it would have been awesome lol. Even a song like I Want You. Who’s responsible there lol? You have to be onboard right from jump.

Paul was trying to go for slow tempos, but heaviness on some early songs. I could tell he was trying to get a feel like on The Move, "Shazam" on Firehouse and some others. I think he said as much in his book. As much as I love the early Kiss albums, I don't think they sound as heavy as Shazam.

@GeorgeRainey-s4v2 ай бұрын
I am sure the remix is very good going by the comments. as for the originals which quite a few complain about. I think it depends on what sound system you are using and the volume. I had the original going through 9 surround speakers on a 3grand amp cranked up and it sounds loud and clear to me. if you are very rich and have a 10 grand-20 grand amp then it should sound even better. I think it all depends on your sound system and I would recommend surround as it is a new experiance compared to stereo.

I guess I’m the odd one out because my blood pressure was I believe higher than it’s ever been while listening to this episode ( had to stop it about 5 times to get through it lol) . I have to admit I disagree with 99.9% of everything the guest said. I waited to post before checking out his remixes/ work, well I did and I can say that the HTH remix ( “ In my honest opinion “) sounds to watered down & muddy. I listen to a few of his mixes & then right after listened to the original recordings & they’re in my opinion are way crisper & clearer than these remixes. I know he put in a ton of time in doing this and I appreciate what he did for everyone in the KISS community as a whole but just not for me. Also, would like to mention that some KISS fans don’t know when you’re talking about other KISS fans naming names that you assume everyone knows. If you say andrew giving him praise for his work at least say his last name so other fans can look up who you’re talking about , if you were referring to Andrew Sgambati he has definitely made some amazing contributions to the KISS world just as you have too Ken Nardi . Peace
@franKENstein620Ай бұрын
Well, yeah. An entire drum kit made of spiked 2-3k frequency is gonna sound “clearer”, but the overwhelming majority obviously finds it hard to listen to. It’s fine if you don’t like it. There are a thousand ways something coups be mixed once the heavy lifting is finished. Not everyone is will agree on anything. I don’t even think it’s anywhere near perfect. In fact I don’t think it’s half as good as most people say it is, but I’m a terrible perfectionist. As for naming names…if you know you know. If you don’t it really doesn’t matter. You won’t hear Andrew mention my name unless he is calling my work “crap” on a message board.

@franKENstein6202 ай бұрын
Sorry you don’t appreciate the sheer genius of this album musically, sonically and lyrically. There is nothing “abstract” about the ending where he is “on trial” (inwardly) as he reflects on all of the pieces of his wall. The conclusion is to tear it down and to stop imprisoning himself in his a self-made isolation. Roger might be an ass at times, but he’s rock’s greatest lyricist. I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess your comments have a lot more to do with his politics than his talent, which is usually the case these days. The WALL is perfection and that includes the contributions of Dave, Nick, Rick and Ezrin.

And when do you grow up because you are here commenting on a KISS podcast, that I would bet you don’t listen to. So, really what is more childish?

I’ve been born again for nearly 30 years and understand that all my skills and talents were given to me by God. The same God who told Adam and Eve that they could eat of (and enjoy) ALL of the trees of the garden except for one. When you sit in God’s judgement seat over people (and a Christian brother, no less) it is you who are eating of the single tree that got them thrown out of that same garden. Prayers that you might someday “grow up” in your faith and come to a better understanding of God’s love and plan for His creation. The scripture you just twisted out of context is Paul referring to growing in your faith and love and sorry, but you still sound like a baby believer. I get it. I was fooled by childish legalistic beliefs at first too, but in time I pray that you will eventually put away childish things. There is nothing about reflecting on the great and exciting childhood that God gave me in a way that allows me to express the creative spirit I’ve been given while bringing a little happiness to others who also enjoyed some of those same things. Study the freedom you’ve been given in Christ and maybe share His love a bit more than His (in your mind) judgement on things like this.
