Alex Nail Photography Thabks mate, I use an Elgato camlink and then just cycle through using the info button to bring up the info on the live view. The hdmi cable and elgato will record whatever the back screen is displaying. One little caveat is that when you go into the menus it will only show up on the output as the back screen of the camera goes black. Hope that helps

@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 6 жыл бұрын
dogisnotreal1 It probably was a little toward magenta in the highlights actually when viewing on my iPhone., I grade in rec709 colour space which is slightly richer and more dynamic than sRGB which you are viewing on KZbin. how did the second shot of Dani look to your eyes on screen? Always interested to know how it translates and funnily enough my reference is once it’s uploaded I check on my iPhone 8! Haha

Hey! Awesome video... can I ask what the point of shooting in CLOG is if the standard picture profile produces those kind of results anyway?
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 4 жыл бұрын
Sorry I missed this comment Anthony! Clog extends dynamic range of the camera sensor enough to give it the edge over using a standard picture profile. I've done a recent more in depth video on this on my channel so check that out if you wanted to find out a bit more about it.

Question... What is the purpose of shooting in C-Log if you're just going to color correct your image to look like th Rec 709 footage? Referring to the first example only.
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 5 жыл бұрын
Mark VanZevenbergen Hey Mark, thanks for checking it out! That first example was to show the difference in the captured footage of cLOG versus the Standard profile - moreso for illustration purposes. There really isn’t a big enough difference in dynamic range for my home studio scene to add the extra step unless you are really pushing the colour grade to a specific flavour that you can’t get from normal canon profiles. However, where you see the cLOG shine when you shoot a scene like that is in the highlight detail and shadow detail. It has a certain look that more than likely gets compressed out on uploading to @KZbin but for client delivery in full res, it does not look like it was shot on a prosumer DSLR. If shot correct (exposure and ISO) the grain in the shadows is really nice and detail for colour work in the highlights and skin tones is so much better than what comes out of camera via a standard profile.

thanks for the info Michael. I was wondering why you dont apply the Canon technical LUTS (as Input, not creative) Eg Canonlog10-to-BT709_FF_Vers2.0? I thought Canon does a lot of the heavy lifting to remap the sensor response when shooting with C Log. If you mask out everything in your scene apart from the grey card, your scopes will show where you exposed correctly for C Log (hard with just histogram on back of camera to hit Canons recommended 34.8 IRE!!), but when you apply the Canon Input LUT, the scopes now show the gray card is at 50
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 6 жыл бұрын
Mark Kelly Awesome info Mark, thanks so much for your comment! 34 IRE seems pretty low (as in too low for the Mark 4 sensor) when I was experimenting with the 18% grey card close up which is why I suggest you should expose skin tones to approx 40 IRE which should avoid noise in the blacks and give you a stop or 2 of extra range in the highlights. I have the luts installed but I wanted to show the difference in the scopes and how the cLog image actually achieves the added range! Thanks again for your comments!
@MichaelDrowley

One final thought to note, I did not shoot the initial section of video where I was cycling between log and standard in the native 400 ISO for cLog on the 5D Mark 4 to avoid having to change it each time I cycled log on and off. If I had have had the camera set to native 400 ISO I should have captured better dynamic range in the highlights and avoided the colour shift toward yellow while grading for skin tones and the backlighting in my studio.

Thanks for your comments Homer! That's coming in the next video I do on cLog and using the canon luts. As I mentioned to Mark, this one was more to show what the difference between cLog and what it actually achieves over a standard picture profiles.

So when you shoot with the 5D Mark IV with Canon Log all you do is use the Lumetri Color panel to take advantage of Canon Log? I assumed it was like working with Red footage or Blackmagic where they have their own settings panel.
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 3 ай бұрын
Hi Jeff, it’s not the same as RAW (which will open up an additional settings panel) on the red and blackmagics . It’s a little bit like using a colour profile that is a bit less saturated and has more detail in the shadows. It still bakes in ISO and white balance unlike RAW footage. There are limitations but I believe it beats out shooting in all other picture profiles.

@MichaelDrowley 4 жыл бұрын
Aytaç ÇAKICI Yes, make sure you use ISO 400. If you shoot lower ISO it will show the gradation between the stops of light which will be more prominent in the shadows. I'm not sure why but always shooting 400 which is the native and recommended ISO setting for clog, should alleviate this.

Would this work for editing c-log footage from canon 6d mkII? Thanks great video!
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 3 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately not, I'm pretty sure there is no Canon specific LOG on the 6D Mark II. Are you referring to the EOS HD or James Miller picture profiles? I'm pretty sure that both of those are still just picture profiles that have tweaked the settings to remove detail, saturation and contrast.

Hello, I just gave you a Thumbs up :) Great video. I have installed Clog (canon service) also and I see so much noise in my video on indoor daylight shooting. On the Clog manual they said you have to keep it best optimezed on iso 400. So what do you have your iso in ? and Clog Canon Lut makes its very noise and artifact.
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 6 жыл бұрын
AndyThien Nguyen what does your vector scope look like when you take the footage in? It’s important to not have the blacks clipped when you shoot in cLog. I shoot between iso 200 and 400. At 400 you have increased dynamic range available but you have to really careful to get the exposure and white balance correct. Hope that helps! Keep experimenting till you get a shot you are happy with! CLog is good

Michael Drowley yeah thanks. I Will keep experimenting. And try not to clip the black. 👍

To start with, you should stick to ISO 400 when shooting log on the 5D IV. That's the only way to get the full dynamic range from the sensor. Use an (variable) ND filter and stick to ISO 400.

@@MichaelDrowley Hi Michael, great video! According to you, does this thing about the ISO 400 work also with 5D mark II? I'm asking this because mark II works better with iso 160-320-640 (...) and even because I've heard that this thing about iso 400 was just for c-log and canon cinema cameras, not for the dslr. I also wanted to ask you if, according to you, the things you said about the exposure would be also good with the mark II, that works better with the highlights and sucks with the lowlights. Thanks a lot!
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley Жыл бұрын
@@pierpaolodemejo933 Thanks for checking out the video! The 5D II is better at the ISO’s you mentioned as they are cleaner (as identified by @PhilipBloom many moons ago) so I’d stick with 160 or 320 for the mark ii. The principles of exposure are similar but not the same for non log images. Because you are not viewing a final image when you capture canon log you have to make some decisions about exposure that are not obvious. When you expose on the 5D ii or any camera not using log, you get a much better idea of exposure from the look of the image overall. Does that make sense?
@pierpaolodemejo933
@pierpaolodemejo933 Жыл бұрын
@@MichaelDrowley Thanks a lot for your answer! Yeah, it definitely makes sense. I guess I'm a little worried because when you shoot in log, as you've shown in this video, the range you can see on the histogram is very narrow, so it's hard to understand when you're doing a bad job on the shadows (this is because we're talking about the mark II, you know what I mean?). On the other side, I see that the highlights clipping limit goes down on the 75% of the histogram, so you have to watch out also to it! For expample, I saw that if you take a picture in c-log and then immediately watch it on the lcd screen, the camera doesn't tell you if the highlights are blown out even if they are indeed.
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley Жыл бұрын
@@pierpaolodemejo933 Yeah, though even in clog on a clog capable camera, the histogram does narrow, but the same principles apply. If you ensure you are not clipping the highlights on the edge of the histogram then you will be fine to colour that image without blown out highlights. On 5D4 and R and R5 a slight problem can arises when you capture with the view assist monitoring set to on where the image you are seeing on camera (with the view assist applied) is not what is being shown to you on the histogram. The histogram is still showing the exposure of the image as the clog profile. This is something that you need to be careful of when shooting with view assist on.

EXPOSURE settings for 18% grey by the book: CLOG and CLOG 3 ( 34.3%) CLOG2 (39.8%). Shooting in low light will give you noise in the shadows and shooting at wrong IRE will give color shifts when you add the correct canon lut prepare to pull your hair out when youre color correcting color matching and color grading

Why are you exposing C log at 40 IRE on 18 % gray?
@MichaelDrowley
@MichaelDrowley 5 жыл бұрын
Jeff Speers Hey Jeff, in my experiments with log on the 5D4 exposing mid grey to the recommended 34 IRE gave me a noisy image in the blacks. The sweet spot I found to be around 38-42 IRE so that’s why I chose to do it this way. In a scene like this, I’m exposing for skin tones which tend to reflect light similarly as would an 18% greycard. Hope that helps, Thanks for your comments!

hi...very nice videos, in general. Please, is it possible for you to share some 1080p clog footage, original, from camera, without grading, transcoding.....just raw files in 1080p...share some link (we transfer or so...)it is almost impossible to find on net such a files. I shoot with 1dx ii i hate how 1080p looks on 1dx ii, but it seems, and lot of 5d iv users talk about that 1080p is much better with 5d iv, specially after c-log implementation. I would like to buy 5d iv, because of good 1080p, but i can not be sure how good it is (with log) because of YT compression of all files and tests i find. So, to judge correctly i need few original files. In my country it is not possible to rent and try. Thank you very much, and keep on with good work on this chanell

Electronic Box Thanks for your feedback! CLog is better in certain situations when you need to protect highlights and/or shadow detail. My studio setup does not call for cLog usually and you’re right that it does require more work to get back to a “standard” or baked in “look” and there are more things to consider. But to get your footage from the 5D4 matching a $10,000 c300 mk ii then cLog is a must have and you need to adopt a professional workflow for getting exposure and white balance dialled in like I outline in this video!
